    Just another week . . . so:

    To those of us who celebrate Christmas;

    To those of you who don't - have a safe and happy festive season, hopefully surrounded by friends or family or both.

    ...well, the tree is up and beautifully decorated, the poinsettia and festive berry branches from Holland tastefully arranged, various items that seem Christmasy from travels (an Egyptian Santa, Jim Thompson hand-crafted angels, tasteful tree ornaments from Christmas fairs in Germany, etc) and a dinner reservation at the Oriental (riverside table please) made and reconfirmed...over-indulgences include regular panettone servings, a third JWB double over ice, and a number of Waitrose faux-German holiday treats...the regular and frustrating nastiness of the swamp fades for a few weeks and the balcony river view calls...

    Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year all!

    Nice thread PH

    ---

    Ray, an educational post.

    The holiday greeting is "Joyous Kwanzaa".
    Today, some African American families celebrate Kwanzaa along with Christmas and New Year's.

    Every year we bake Chrissie cookies (Spritzgebäck) for some of our more elderly neighbours:

    There are two, in particular, who stand out - both in their 90s. A kiwi lady who used to be quite well known as a couturier who has outlived all relatives, including her children and an English gentleman who came to NZ over 60 years ago and built up a rather large wool export company. He also has no relatives.

    Both still stoically live in their house and have cleaners and gardeners, drive and have an active social life.

    Spending Chrissie with my wife's foster parents in Christchurch and because we flew in October we decided to drive this time . . . taking the ferry from the North island to the South, Wellington to Picton.

    A three and a half hour sail.
