Mainland China Tourists . . . the bad and the ugly (there isn't a good)

I'm sure we've all had experiences with mainland Chinese tourists, and I'm equally sure they weren't particularly nice experiences.

After spending over a week in Sihanoukville recently consulting for a China-owned hotel/casino I simply couldn't believe some of the things I saw . . . and heard (not as in understanding, rather in volume).

It got quite personal a few months back at a very nice 5-star in Singapore . . . 11pm and my daughters were asleep in the room next door when commotion erupted from outside . . . just shouting, door slamming etc etc etc . . . My wife got up and asked them to please be quiet as it was late (yes, she speaks Mandarin, being Malaysian/Singaporean Chinese) . . . and was met with shouting and lovely things like:

"It is our turn to be rich, we own Asia"
"It isn't late for us, go fuck your white husband"
and so on and so on . . .

They had actually left their doors open and were shouting to one another from inside their rooms . . . animals. Anyway, my wife called security but it took them half an hour to get these morons to shut up. The hotel did apologise for placing us on a floor 'secured' for mainland groups.

Being the insecure little man that I am I proceeded to phone them all several times at five a.m and knocked on their doors quite loudly as we were leaving to catch another flight.

Then I saw this video by chance . . . and remember . . . there are close to 1.4 billion of them ... 1.400.000.000 . . . and not all of them are like this. Our new neighbours here in NZ are Mainlanders from Shanghai and are relatively quiet, play golf, send their kids to school and are pleasant.

Any experiences you've had that are worth mentioning?

(Yes, I know others can be bad tourists as well, but this is a focus on mainland Chinese)

The Chinese now account for 57.48% of all tourists in Thailand and what makes this even more staggering is only 8.7% currently have passports (120 million).
According to Jing Travel this could double by 2020 – that means 240 million Chinese able to travel (363% of the UK population – 66 million). They also go on to state that first time Chinese travellers are more likely to travel more close to home to begin with, so places like Vietnam and, you guessed it, Thailand.

Lots and lots of yuan to be had. And, as they are the temporary "tourists" they are a whole lot more desirable than us "longstayers".

Best get used to it. Actually I'm quite adept at avoiding the crowds, fortunately they all follow their flagbearers. Care in selecting hotel accommodations though.

One time in a Bangkok hotel with five buses of chinese (two full floors I think). We were on a different floor - no problem at all 'til the breakfast buffet - then...

Meh, lower end sexpats are arguably worse. Thailand needs big spenders, not some penny pinching wanker always carping about how unfair exchange rates are. Conservative boomers getting their knickers in a twist about free market capitalism are hilarious, but idiots.

Seems to be quite a bit of difference in manner between the ages of the mainlanders. Younger Chinese (in my experience) seem to be a lot more polite and aware of their surroundings than their elders.
Maybe it's to do with the old Communist brainwashing that manners were bourgeois and counter-revolutionary, as per Mao's little red book that makes the older ones behave the way they do.?

Possibly a little but it also comes from not having had any contact with the outside world and being ignorant of how others behave

    Bangkok Post 28JAN2019 Thailand saw a record 38.27m tourists in 2018;
    41m expected in 2019

So, do the math, very rough numbers and projections, but:

    Of the 37.27m tourists (57.48% Chinese) = 21.42m Chinese tourists in 2018
    41m expected in 2019 (57.48% Chinese) = 23.57m Chinese tourists in 2019 (Tentative)
Chinese travelers may double in 2020 = 44m Chinese tourists in 2020 (Possible/Projected)

Yup, the streets and hotels are gonna be crowded with a capital C and there ain’t no way TAT is going to overlook or not pay significant attention/effort to attracting as many as possible. A shit load of money at stake here. Quality deep-pocket tourists be damned – the sheer volume of “on-the-cheap” tightwad Chinese spending money justifies a most concentrated effort to get ‘em here.

    Brace yourself.

Unlike our more discerning western friends who stay at quality establishments like Daengs short time hotel.

Fortunately you don't see a lot of them at the pointy end.

They tend to stay in low class accommodation, travel economy and go to the major tourist sites en masse.

Angkor Wat is teeming with them.

A large part of my consulting is done for clients that are in the tourism and hospitality sector, both private and government and the chasm of what they each want is massive. Government want LOADS of tourists, whereas private wants quality, preferably thee-week stays

Chinese government can turn off the tap to any given country on a whim if they are 'displeased' with anyone so governments also need to be wary of an over-reliance on China

Opposite the Concord? Nice place . . . and inexpensive. One of the good things about KL, accommodation pricing is very low. Stayed at the Park Royal downtown last time for a week - worked in the building, so it just made sense. RM400 Corp rate

Genting Hong Kong bought out the American cruise line Crystal Cruises a couple of years ago. The new owners comped their high roller gamblers from China and turned them loose on their ships with unsuspecting Americans. Apparently, the Chinese were spitting in the elevators and stairways, smoking, screaming at the top of this lungs, and otherwise exhibiting uncouth shipboard behaviors. Makes me giggle to hear of Americans experiencing Chinese behavior for the first time. And, stuck on a ship with them.
