    Handy for temperature conversions, too.

And playing a bit of music while you're cooking.
Earlier when i provided the distance between NY and Khon Kaen " ask the man at the door of your Thai home what he want? from 8,478 mi away (distance from NY to Khon Kaen)" after my tape measure top out at 25 ft the info was enthusiastically provided to me by Alexa
The sooner you fall behind, the more time you have to catch up.

Did you check to see what your dogs were doing from the other side of the world?
Who feeds and walks these dogs on the other side of the world? Why not tell him/her to answer the door and turn the lights off?

I can play all my music from my smartfone to a bluetooth speaker. I can also turn my lights on and off and look through webcams from abroad without talking to the coffee table

For me the cons of having a device that is constantly listening in my house far outweigh the pros, when I can do it all anyway without the stupid gimmick

Alexa Guard is a new skill that you can enable in your smartphone alexa app to monitor your home when way. It works with your Alexa dot device. It will detect braking glass sound, smoke alarm or co2 alarm and send your phone an alert, then to confirm you can activate a web cam and have visual confirmation. activate two way communication and start yelling at intruder telling him "Police is on its way" and set loud alarm. It is all very inexpensive, I have it at both my US homes and will be installing it at our Thai home as son as I come back this fall. Already have webcams.
Anyone wants to listen into my farting , burping and all three minutes of my love making sounds is welcome. LOL

    Let Alexei teach you Thai.
I just discovered a new Alexa skill.
    Teaching Languages.
Not sure if it is available in Thailand (cant imagine it will not be) but I am not there right now to check.
In the vid it says "Download the skill from the Alexa skill store" but in my Alexa echo it was already installed.

Not only Alexa, Google Home's Assistant is equally nosy.
I lost one of my internet connections the other day, the one my Google Home devices are connected to.
Woke up in the middle of the night by Assistant declaring loud and clear that it didn't have an internet connection and suggested ways to remedy that.
What did it want to do in the middle of the night without being commanded, upload "sound samples" ?

The assistant could be connected to devices the user depends for his/hers safety or even a wake up alarm etc. For the assistant not to warn the user in the event such functions were incapacitated do to internet connectivity issues would have being negligent.
If one does not want to be disturbed one can simply post a "do not disturb" command.

Agreed but since the assistant knows so much then it also ought to know that there weren't any such dependencies or functions enabled.
It wanted to use my internet for a reason only known by itself, maybe it just felt lonely. ET phone home..

Assistants are not without problems, but they are getting better all the time. I think the day will come that like cellphones , we will wonder how we ever lived without them.
One time Alexa started playing music in the middle of the night , it has never happened again , but it could be because I have set up a "do not disturb " routine. I am sure Google has the same skill.
With Alexa you can simply use the verbal command nightly when you so desire and remove it in the morning, or you can set it up that Alexa goes on "do not disturb" mode every night at a particular time , and is reactivated at a particular time.

My girlfriend asked me why I was speaking so softly at home.
I told her I was afraid Mark Zuckerberg was listening!
    She laughed. I laughed.
    Alexa laughed. Siri laughed.

I think I experienced that once. But it could have been Thai or any other foreign agency for all I knew.
