I have a main account which has no ATM card and no internet banking. It requires my wife or me to go to the bank and either withdraw or transfer to second account.

The second account has an ATM and is the one we use, topping up from the main one as required. This one also has internet banking to allow transfer to a third account.

The third account is for use by MIL to look after the family and farm; it has an ATM card but no internet access and only petty cash.

When in Germany, my wife phones the bank manager on a regular basis to check the balances, especially if we've done a big transfer. The guy is pretty decent, even holding the odd transaction until exchange rate is favourable.

Just to be on the safe side, my main money is in Germany...

That would be Barclays in the UK, quite a secure set up, obviously have to access my phone first which needs a finger print then a 5 digit pin to enter my Barclays account. Only issue I have is that while I can view the balance on my stocks and share accounts I can't trade on it, hence have to log on to my lap top with the pin sentry system which is a pain. If not familiar with it same as having a terminal at home which they use in shops to pay for your goodies.

I asked the manager and he said we can open a new account like he was doing me a favour, still didn't explain to me why my bank account had dissappeared, yet I had a valid bank card.
I didn't do anything for a year because I misplaced my bank book (only a Bt10k or so in the account). When I realised I was never going to find it, I went in on my next trip and they told me to go and get a police report, which I did (just said I lost it - Bt200 or something for the paper).

Then they opened me a new account, put the money in it and gave me a new book.

I make a point of logging in every month just to show I'm still alive.

Seriously, they must get loads of accounts that go dormant.

I had a "dormant" account in Oz that wasn't used for 6 years and went back and normal business was resumed, even with an out of date atm card.

Banking practices are different in Thailand.

Don't know if true or not but my misses is under the impression if less than 500 baht in a bank account and dormant for over a year they will close it, although you will still be able to get your less than 500 baht back if walk into the bank with evidence of your closed without your knowledge account.

My SCB Account gets charged a BHT 200 annual fee, so maybe that account of yours might be lost to fees.

Banking practices are different in Thailand.
Dormant accounts are now utilised by the Government as an interest free loan.

'Dormant' used to be 7 years, but to overcome a Budget shortfall, it went to 3 years.

The fookers still have $600 of mine, which I haven't been able to get back.

If anyone has unclaimed money in Australia, this Government site will help you locate it.

Goes way back ... I found some money from when my Dad passed, and that was ages ago.

I keep one KTB account for internet purchases and other stuff that requires an VISA OTP code. I keep the big money in Bank of Bangkok and a deposit only account in Bank of Bangkok for my pension. All my accounts notify me on my phone of balance and any activity. When I get really old and really senile I'll have to rely on my wife to do the banking. But she will still have to wheel me to the bank to withdraw my pension as then demand proof of life.

    That's true, with SCB anyway.

I had debated leaving my pension in a bank in the USA and having it sent here via ATM but decided on the deposit only account in the Bank of Bangkok as the most secure way for me to be worth more alive than dead. One has to sign a copy of your passport while they watch you. Seems secure to me.

Email whenever I login for online banking, another on each transaction, instant sms on credit card transactions with amount and location, good enough for me.

I find the Bangkok Banks security and service excellent
Any transactions on my bank or credit card accounts and i receive a Email straight away notifying me of the transaction and a once a week email notifying me of my current savings account balance even when i have made no transactions on the account, and they also notify me a week before they deduct money from my savings account to pay any outstanding credit card purchases
Better service than the NAB in Australia
If you only keep a small amount of money in a bank account it can very rapidly disappear in fees and charges on the account

Its easy to find, but a bit more difficult to claim.
There's $25 owed to my Mum from 1980.
Also just over $1,500 owed to me from 1998. I'll get around to claiming that one day...

I found a building society book the other week from 30 years ago with a £107 balance.

Transactions all written in by hand and stamped the old fashioned way.

What's it worth today and how would I claim it back?

    Ask the building society.

Might be worth a few quid now as most building societies were privatised with windfalls of about £500 to all account holders. Which building society is it?
