    Why do we sleep?

    Seriously, why?

Why would you end you day unconscious and virtually paralysed, leaving yourself open to attack by all and sundry?

    What's the point of it?
What do we gain from it?

One person described sleep as the brain de-fragmenting itself.
Some seem to think that dreaming is a crucial part of out existence.

30% of our lives spent in limbo. OK I made up the number there but it is a lot.

    So, why sleep?

Our bodies all require long periods of sleep in order to restore and rejuvenate, to grow muscle, repair tissue, and synthesize hormones.

*Also to get a stiffy every morning.... morning wood sunshine.

    Crackerjack,

See the new thread on the brain being able to delete things.

    Sleep is noted.

Whilst you might be right I've read that there is actually very little energy conserved whilst sleeping. The repair and rejuvenation of which you speak actually happens all the time 24/7.
Science seems more than a little bemused by the whole "sleep" phenomenon.

The greatest unanswered question around. We know we spend between 20-40% of our lives asleep. 30% would be 8 hours a night. But nobody know how or why.

Same thing goes for dreams. An intriguing study. The brain, the body, some form of genetic hibernation, ie; the need to conserve energy at night? Great thread.

^ Hence the paraphrase in 'Dick-speak' above to make it obvious.

That is part of sleep buddy, temperature and "physiological changes". Why we learn not to pee in the bed as well.

Think about it. If you sleep 8 hours a night 1/3 of your life is unexplained. All that is known now is that sleep is a "different state of consciousness, and is essential.

What about women, dick? Do you remember them? They're the "ho's" you believe deserve whatever they get from violent, drunken "bro's". They sleep too and many of them don't have penises

Years ago I picked up a paper back in some out of town second hand book shop.
It related the research of some bloke who'd spent a number of years investigating some remote tribe that believed that their dreams were reality and that there waking time was just something to be got through.

It was fascinating but I lost it. As I said it was years ago and I've no recollection of the title or the author.

Still, the concept is intriguing. How real are our dream world experiences? Do they actually mean anything?
Will I dream when I die?
I'm an absolute atheist so I doubt it.
Can dreams be interpreted to any real effect?

It's a funny old game this sleeping, dreaming lark.

please let's not start slagging off each other from previous threads Bob. You do,however, raise a good point. Obviously women wake up to piss during the course of the night but do they also wake up feeling horny due to bladder pressure on their bits?

    I've no idea.

    I shall ask her.

    Maybe.

99% of our species are yet, still asleep - a dreamy state.

And in particular - some sub-cultures will never awaken.....remaining naturally catatonic.

It just so happens I have this recurring dream every night and it's always the same theme in that I'm trying to go somewhere but I never get there. Obstructions and hurdles always get in the way.
Anyways, I told my missus this story and she said that if I did actually arrive at the place I was trying to get to I'd die. About 3 days later her and the MiL dragged me off to the temple where I had a monk recite gobbledygook to me and tie a pieces of string around our wrists. Apparently my missus claims I will now never ever reach my destination and live a long time.

    Indeed.

    More information required.

I can't believe I've never asked the question before.

I expect, nay demand, that all you blokes ask your female friends.

Gay blokes can ask the boy friends that have had the op.

The answer is in this thread
Have you ever felt like your brain is full, usually when you learn something new, or start a new job or a hobby? Well, it may just be.

When you learn lots of new things, your brain builds connections, but they’re inefficient, ad hoc connections. Your brain needs to prune a lot of those connections away and build more streamlined, efficient pathways. It does that when we sleep.

Not true. It's only because we've evolved that way, because until electricity was invented there was fuck all to do after dark.

The question should be, why do we wake up? To feed and breed. Without those requirements we would have evolved like plants, to sleep and rejuvenate continuously.

I always thought we sleep to avoid being predated upon by nocturnal animals. Most apes sleep in trees away from ground patrolling predators, well also have our bedrooms upstairs. If we have multi level houses.

    Nein, ich bin kein Berlinner.

But, like you and most other blokes one is awakened often in the early hours with a substantial erection and an immediate desire to piss.

Personally I find sexual interaction when so aroused is not my favorite.

Though, having said that, I did live with an Hungarian woman who found it most stimulating.
She was also into vegetables in a big way but that's another story.
Which, incidentally was banned on TD by the Dog himself.

    Those were the days.
