It's called Thailand.. not Farangland... like it or not, rightly or wrongly, your rights come second to the Thais in their country. I don't mean to incite anger, I'm not saying that in glee, from the safety and equality of my democratic home of NZ.

I believe the subtle nuances of every language, has built in, subconscious (but very deliberate) racial divides... usually to foster patriotism it is deemed necessary to think of oneself as superior, that is reflected in language.

How old-timers refer to the Japanese as Japs, or blacks as niggers, Asians as gooks, Aussies as convicts, etc... denotes a lack of respect and that in effect, causes divides/barriers between people.

Like I said... living in Thailand, ya gotta take the good, with the bad... let them call themselves anything as majestic and magical as they like, if it makes them feel 'zaapecial'... sabai jai...

"Farang" It also depends on the tone/inflection of the voice (those that speak Thai, will get what I mean)...

mostly it's a non-issue, most Thais are good Thais and respect foreigners, ....and don't mean any negative connotation.. it's just their slang common word for the polite version of "Khun Dtang Chart" foreigner.

It could be worse, they could refer to you as "khun dtang dow" 'alien" even more derogatory... or alienating lol...

In every country and even in matters of gender we appear predisposed to have a "them and us" outlook. It is in no way unique or more pronounced in Thai culture.

I seldom ever hear the word Farang. We mostly joke and they call me "Lekrueng"

I think I would be heavily offended if my wife called me Teerak. I think that is reserved for the Dirty area of Pattaya

I agree with Iceman & Todd. Having a word for foreigner (or white foreigner) is not unique to Thailand. White foreigners are either called farang, barang, gaijin, gringo, etc. In Myanmar, I heard the hotel staff mention me as a foringga, a foreigner. When I lived briefly abroad, I was called 'auslaender'. Did I get offended? No, because it's just the way it is and I accepted it.

In PI, we call white foreigners as Kano, short for Amerikano. Davis said he hasn't heard it, but Callippo, a part-time expat in PI, he used to post here, has heard it often. He said he even used the term Kano to the locals, i.e. Do you know if that Swedish Kano bar is open? (Lol. His words, not mine). For me, the term Kano is not derogatory, it's just a generic term. I heard it being used often by some food vendors when I visited Puerto Galera, since there's a (white) expat community there.

If you went to the PI and they called you Kano, would your feathers get ruffled too? (Heh. I know that's a loaded question, since some ppl on here would abhor to be mistaken for Merkin.)

Farang, barang, gaijin, gringo, kano - same same but different. Get over it!

P.s. In Europe, I was often mistaken as Chinese, since my eyes are a bit small
. Even Chinese grocery owners were fooled initially, when I entered their store & said, Ni.hao ma? (a friend taught me)
