Could stay here in Japan with my present employment until 2019 but we're voluntarily leaving next year.

It's a great place and may consider coming back again at some point for one more job assignment.

IMHO you seem like the sort who will love living in Japan.

Dick, look at the bright side. If it all goes sideways at least you can move in with your wife's family ...and at the very worst back to NZ.
ALL in all you might have made a good choice as nothing in life is guaranteed. Sounds as though the both of you are happier in Fukuoka.

Oh, the beauty of hindsight... I'm sure many of us have such stories.

It sounds like you and your wife are a strong team and this new adventure can only strengthen your relationship not to mention your horizons.

I hope everything goes well for you both.

    ^ True dat... Thanks Jim.

I can't imagine selling our investment properties - even if I/we hated living in Japan
    or couldn't find enough students...

Unless the NZ property market took a nose dive - then we could pop back and buy my mum's gaff for the price of packet of crisps...

For what it 's worth follow your heart.
I've only been to Japan once loved it but as a lover of Rugby sailing wine walking and sheep the long white cloud somewhere south of Picton and the further from the throng the more the sheep and cheaper the living.

@dickie - I'd say go for it! I think you already know what's right, you're just here for affirmation & a second opinion, which is also good. You're still young enough to recover from a fall, if ever your ventures don't succeed.

If I ever extend my travels to Japan & you're already there, I'll ring you up in Fukuoka for an Asahi!

Re: the guy who inherited $$ at 18, ah.. the dilemma. To travel the world while young or to invest? I think it's good if you can do both!

Re: hindsight - I wonder how the guy (a professor, I think) who sold his founding shares in Apple felt when the company became big. Forgot the name & can't google it now.

As long as the property is in both your names how far could you fall?

If it goes tits up sell up half and half and then you're back in the safety net of the NZ state-sponsored, socialist, Obama-care, leftie system.

You won't end up like the numpties who enter Thailand with a fairytale dream and a bunch of cash putting everything into the wife's name.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

They're a bunch of fukkin freaks those Japs. You'll blend right in there Dicky.

Theres a new tv series started called Joanna Lumleys Japan. It should be on pirate bay.

Here it is, theres 3 episodes.
    http://thepiratebay.org/search/joann...ys+japan/0/0/0

I watched the second one the other night about Tokyo. A third or 2 thirds of men are single. Shows you a load of grown men following a girl band waving glow in the dark probes. Fukkin weirdoes

    Cheers mate, that's the plan...

Although I think you will find that weird streak, is confined to small sects/cliques of society (unfortunately)... mainly in the hip/trendy areas (Tokyo)...

Fukuoka is very conservative... there is a small red-light area, I forgot the name... her bros took me there after my wedding (I shit you not)...

Yes, thank you Cherry.. she's almost back to 'normal'...
