    Pokemon Go Thread

The US Holocaust Memorial Museum has asked people not to play Pokemon Go on their phones during their visit.

A spokesman for the museum in Washington said that playing the game inside a memorial to victims of Nazism was "extremely inappropriate".

The Arlington National Cemetery, just three miles away from the museum, has also warned off Pokemon players.

Both locations feature in the new smartphone game, which has become a a commercial and cultural phenomenon.

Pokemon Go allows players to search locations in the real world to find Pokemon creatures.

It became the top-selling app on both iPhone's app store and Google Play just days after its release in the US, Australia and New Zealand.

Like many other landmarks, both the museum in Washington and the military cemetery in Virginia are places where players can come across Pokemon creatures.

They are both reportedly also Pokestops, where players can collect virtual items like snacks and medicine for Pokemon, but officials at the museum are trying to get it removed from the game.

Media captionThe BBC's Chris Foxx took to the streets to explore some of the app's highs and lows

And the cemetery has also made its move to address the new craze.

"Playing games such as Pokemon Go on these hallowed grounds would not be deemed appropriate," cemetery officials said in a statement.

Spokesman Stephen Smith said they had not experienced any problems yet but wanted to act before they potentially arose.

It would be hard to know whether someone was playing the game on their phone or using the cemetery's own app to find their way round.

There has been no response yet from game developers Niantic Labs on whether it could stop Pokemon creatures from appearing inside the Holocaust Museum.

I've always been baffled by this attitude. I was once part of a group chastised for running across a cemetery.
    The retort was:
" Don't you think the people in here ever had fun"?
"Do you think the people in here would criticize us for having fun"

It has more to say about the people still living than the ones who have died.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.
You people, you think I know feck nothing; I tell you: I know feck all

Is Pokemon an analogy for Brown Shirts or somesuch? If it is, then I agree it's inappropriate.
But is it? I don't think so.
Is it OK for a bored teenager, dragged in there by parents, to play Candy Crush? I'm sure it happens. Why is Pokemon singled out?

Because Pokemon is hot right now and the Holocaust museum is not so it's good for publicity?

On side note, an NZ newspaper that I dare not mention (because every mention of it gets my post deleted....why?) reported yesterday that a Pokestop happens to be at a Hell's Angels HQ.
When a "club" member came to the gate to answer reporter's questions, he said he knows nothing of PG, and suggested the reporter go ask the police.

These phones have reached the same level of addiction as nose picking, only difference is most parents teach their children when it's not ok to pick their nose.

There really is something frightening about the prevalence of phone zombe behavior.

And why is there a 'holocaust' museum in the U.S. anyway, everyone knows the 'holocaust' is a myth.

Whilst I kinda agree with you there's defo a line.

I remember being at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Cambodia and there were a bunch of dickheads walking around with their shirts off, drinking beer, and being loud and obnoxious.

Not saying that this is anywhere near the same though obviously. Just that time/place and all that.

The Newspapers where full of pictures of kids playing the very latest released Pokeman game, kids where all over the world, Disneyland was a favourite.
Not one picture of the U.S.A. Holocaste museum.
With a kid playing the NEWIST game.
One its not really a fun place, and two, talk about desperation by the museum for a few cheap headlines of publicity, from a kids game.

Pokeman is alive, and 6 million kids play it live at one time.

Places that are memorials for the dead or for tragic events in history are not places to be running around playing video games and ignoring and disrespecting the purpose of the place.

I don't know how the target locations are decided in PokemonGo but they should not be located inside areas dedicated as places of respect or remembrance for the dead or for events like the WWII holocaust.

Nintendo shares up more than 50% since Pokemon Go release

Shares in the Japanese company Nintendo have seen a stellar rise since the release of their augmented reality game Pokemon Go, gaining more than 50% since the release last week.

Shares jumped 16% on Thursday, making an overall increase of 56% since trading closed on Friday.

Pokemon Go players search locations in the real world to find virtual Pokemon creatures on their smartphone screens.

The game has become a global phenomenon since its release.

It topped the app store download chart on both iPhone's App Store and Google Play just days after its initial release in the US, Australia and New Zealand.

Nintendo shares had already started the week with a 25% jump on Monday alone.

    Pokemon stories:-

An American woman found a dead body while she was looking for a Pokemon in a river near her home. Police said the man had died within the last 24 hours and no foul play was suspected.

Four people were arrested after they used the game to lure players to remote places and then rob them at gunpoint. In response, the makers of Pokemon Go have said people should "play with friends when going to new or unfamiliar places" and "remember to be safe and alert at all times".

The anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church in the US is the location of a "gym" in the game, and players planted a pink "Clefairy" Pokemon called Love is Love there. The church has responded with a series of social media posts calling the Pokemon a sodomite.

There have also been plenty of reports of people falling over and grazing or cutting themselves because they're not paying attention to what's in front of them while they play.

The Pokemon creatures first emerged in the 1990s on Nintendo's Game Boy device.

For the new game, Nintendo has partnered with US-based developer Niantic and the Pokemon Company, which owns the rights to the characters.

Nintendo, which is also behind the iconic Super Mario game, has traditionally relied on sales of its gaming consoles.

However, sales of those have been slowing in recent years as more gamers move online and onto portable devices.

Analysts have long criticised the company for lagging its rivals like Sony and being late to the game in catering to the growing smartphone market.

    .

The real museums are in Germany.

This one can only house pictures.

    Hopefully it will back-fire.

Most of the Holocaust happened in German occupied territory, outside Germany. The "real" museums are the Operation Reinhard camps in Poland but there are memorials everywhere and they should be treated with respect.

i've got it but as it's not released in Thailand yet there is nothing to 'catch'.

Basically you have to move around looking for Pokemon to catch. It uses GPS and some thing I can't remember the name of to make them appear in 'real life' on your screen.

That's about all I know until I can actually play it properly.

it will work in the US , Australia and New Zealand - it is an argumented reality game

if you are desperate you can load up a android emulator and spoof the GPS - just be careful how far and fast you travel

It's by niantic and is based on Ingress. Anywhere there are Ingress portals pokemon go will work. No GPS spoofing is required unless you want to indulge in some very specialised cheating. Pokestops and gyms are directly mapped to Ingress portals. I've been playing for the last 10 days in England using an apk from a Chinese site. I think it went legit on the UK play store and app store yesterday or the day before. You don't have to wait for it to be released in your country for it to be playable.
