^ A rather learned Northern Irish friend of mine (yes a proddy- but no Orangeman) favoured reunification of a very different variety. He favoured the ROI 'reuniting' with UK via Referendum, under the auspices of the EU. He said this would be to the economic and social benefit of all tribes concerned, given the realities of modern day nation states.

    Your thoughts?

There are websites where you can find out you family history. As long as you know, even vaguely, dates of birth, places of birth etc. of your ancestors. If you have grandparents born in Ireland - you can get an Irish Passport. Ancestry.com, i think is the website. A friend of mine, and it took him ages, got his family tree back to the 17th century.

That's how so many Americans get them... which pisses me off no end.

I got mine, twenty years ago. i am onto my second one now. Born in Belfast, to parents born in Belfast, etc. All i needed to put on the form was where i was born and my mothers maiden name. Even though my parents, and i, had British passports. Most of my family have their British ones. Just me and my brother went Irish. That'll show em!!

I would like to think that Australians are more Irish than Americans, if they want an Irish passport. The Americans seem to take it as granted and stomp around Ireland like great big bog waders. Claiming their bit of turf.

If LT's last name is Paisley - i totally refute what i have just said...!! Or it might be Sands!!

Oh, and my father was an Orangeman and wore his sash so proud..... sing along. But he wasn't a bigot. He got him and his family out of there in the 1950's sixties.

Shise, i forgot it was the Twelth!! Don your bowler hats!! See, so far away from that crap. And will probably read or see some sort of molotov thrown... by a shaved head kid who was born 15 years ago...

My thoughts are that it's impossible to discuss such an idea on a forum like this or, really, on any online forum. It's much too complex a subject. Next time you come to the UK or Ireland let me know and I would be more than happy to meet up and discuss ideas like this at length as long as we have decent drink and decent food to keep us going while we talk. There's no fun in changing the world if we're either sober or hungry or, God forbid, both!

My sister spent a year looking into family past, we have same Irish dad but different mothers. She traced her family on her mums side back to 1035 which I think is pretty unusual. On our dads side however she got nowhere, apparently there was a fire in the records office in Dublin at some time and a lot of stuff got destroyed so parish records is all that was left.

There is the fact that you are Irish because you have it in your blood.

Or there is the Irish because you can.

    My blood is Irish.

We, as a family including the Scottish ones, are really getting into the family tree and the roots.

It will be interesting. The outcome.

I may be a sort of Nordic wench. But the auburn hair must come from Ireland. But then we have blonds...

Whatever, very interesting. And something i would think Australians should look into. Just for the interest thing.

And they can probably go back in their history more than the seppos can.

With the fact they stole a loaf of bread or a chicken in the first place. There must be some sort of written thing about that.

LoyToy, there is a lot of history out there. At your fingertips.

Terry will hate this, having vetoed all alliances to the soap dodgers.

You may not get an Irish Passport, but just looking into your families history will be interesting- And also ask your still alive old relatives. they are an aussie pool of information. There is a lot of skeletons in my family, who cares?!

I actually have family in Australia- we know about each other but have never met.

    Was that babble enough----?

"In his book Living Birds of the World from 1958, ornithologist Ernest Thomas Gilliard wrote:

The inner or second of the three toes is fitted with a long, straight, murderous nail which can sever an arm or eviscerate an abdomen with ease. There are many records of natives being killed by this bird".
