    Thai police and speed guns

Well it seems that the police here have now got speed guns and will all become rich

Yesterday I was toodling along at about 150km when the traffic started bunching up, seems the locals are used to this speed trap and the passerbys are the ones that get caught, so I'm down to about 100km and the outside lane clears up as everything has moved into the left lane, I started accelerating and see the nice man with what I thought was a tv camera, got to to admit I didn't know those speed guns were so damn big, he had the bloody thing on a tripod, couple of hundred meters down the road they were there awaiting, one of the idiots is standing in the fast lane waving at me, got to admit I did think about just driving on, but I pulled up on the hard shoulder and pc somchai comes over and asks me how fast did I think I was going, being one thats not willing to incriminate myself I took a wild guess of about 80km, he didn't smile at that one, thats when I realised it weren't a tv camera so then he starts going on about I have to stay in the left hand lane, I explained that that was impossible as I was overtaking at the time, seems they got me at 116km so that aint too bad, he then asked if I had a driving license, obviously I said yes, there was an awkward silence for a while, he was assuming that I did have a driveing license and was waiting for me to produce it, unfortuneately I dont have one of them so I let the silence continue, hmmm, then he asked to see it So I told him it was at home, now he decides he is going to give me a ticket for speeding and driving in the fast lane, 1,000baht fine, so I gave him a lecture on safe overtaking but he really didn't seem that interested, but he did tell me he could give me a discount, so the bargaining began, I started with an initial offer of 100baht, he wern't gonna go for this and 500baht was his minimum, time to admit to being a serial speeding offendor I decided, so I told him that 10 minutes previously I had been stopped and already paid the police, why should I pay the police 2 times in one day, obviously I hadn't but he didn't know that
He took pity on me and asked if 200baht would be alright, I was going to stick to my guns of a 100baht fine, but, I just couldn't be bothered, the moral of the story? just lie to the gits

I got one in a speed trap at Uttertadit a couple years ago on my way back home from CM, they stopped me at a road block a few km on down the road and gave me a ticket for 125 km, which I had to pay at post office and then got my license back in the mail. 200 baht..

They don't have to operate them, they only have to say 116km/h to get 2 reds.

Speed detector guns have been around here for a few years, but they seem to disappear for a while and then make a resurgance so I guess they break down and are disgarded (or swapped for a bottle of Black label) until a new batch arrive.
Made a trip, Udon / Pattaya/ Bkk / Udon last week and never got stopped once, a first for me.

    THE BEST SPEEDING EXCUSE....EVER!
Two British traffic patrol officers from North Berwick were involved in an unusual incident while checking for speeding motorists on the A1 Great North Road. One of the officers used a hand-held radar device to check the speed of a vehicle approaching over the crest of a hill and was surprised when the speed was recorded at over 300 mph. Their radar suddenly stopped working and the officers were not able to reset it.
Just then a deafening roar over the treetops revealed that the radar had in fact latched on to a NATO Tornado fighter jet which was engaged in a low-flying exercise over the Border district, approaching from the North Sea.
Back at police headquarters the chief constable fired off a stiff complaint to the RAF Liaison office. Back came the reply in true laconic RAF style:
"Thank you for your message, which allows us to complete the file on this incident. You may be interested to know that the tactical computer in the Tornado had detected the presence of, and subsequently locked onto your hostile radar equipment and automatically sent a jamming signal back to it.
Furthermore, an air-to-ground missile aboard the fully-armed aircraft had also automatically locked onto your equipment.
Fortunately the pilot flying the Tornado recognized the situation for what it was, quickly responded to the missile systems alert status and was able to override the automated defence system before the missile was launched and your hostile radar installation was destroyed
