need help with research project, please

    Hello everyone!

This is my first time at this site. I had not heard about it before, but it came recommended. In addition to traveling around the forum area, I am hoping to find some folks to help me with my research.

I am a third year doctoral student in Organizational Communication and Rhetoric (Ohio University) and I am currently working on my dissertation research.

The research I am doing right now focuses on English teachers in Thai universities, colleges, language schools, high schools, etc… and how they use websites to socialize and prepare themselves for life in Thailand, working in Thai organizations, and/or teaching EFL courses.

I lived in Thailand for five years and taught Management and Marketing courses at Yonok College and Bangkok University. Although I did not teach English except for a handful of conversation classes for overtime pay, I have friends and colleagues who have. The interesting career path which many of them have taken has led me to my research area.

As part of my research, I would like to invite interested EFL teachers who are teaching/have taught in Thailand to participate in an interview via instant messaging or email. The interviews will mainly focus on your experiences prior to arriving in Thailand. As I am in the United States, all interviews will be scheduled around your time in order to avoid difficulties with teaching schedules or work rules.

All personal information (e.g., names, screen names, emails, etc.) will be kept confidential.

Please PM or email me if you are interested in participating or have questions about the research.

    Continued success,

    Michael

To Marmite the Dog: Thanks for changing the color.

Spin: Sorry, I would like to, but I did not receive any funding for this project. I can provide a hearty "thank you" though!

    Maybe he already has.

There are a few teachers on here, even if they don't like to admit it.

just out of interest, where is the practical value of researching a thesis like this...seems pretty pointless really when there could be so many things about education in Thailand that could be beneficial to the community at large...

I would like to help you but there was no internet when I came to Thailand...

Hey everyone, thanks for the posts/questions.

For those interested in the broader purposes of why I am am conducting this research:

The main purpose of the research is socialization through virtual communities and websites prior to joining organizations, not education or even teaching. The EFL teachers are a good example of the way individuals can utilize virtual communities as realistic job previews (however realistic "realistic" can be) mainly because of the freedom/opportunity many of them have to travel around the country, region, or world. It is this transitional ability that I am interested in and how it relates to the use of the internet. Also, a number of teachers are part-time (in several places) and that is another interest area of mine as too much organizational work is focused on full-time, corporate environments. More needs to be known about the experiences of other forms of work/employment.

I agree completely that there are other pursuits which could directly affect the educational system here (and just about anywhere else) in a positive manner. However, I am not an Education scholar, but rather I am interested in organizational life in a variety of forms (e.g., online sport, internet music, and others).

My work begins there. If I can find ways through the contacts and sources I have to offer a study that will aid Thai (and other) EFL programs, language institutes, etc... with their foriegn staff, then that is an additional benefit. Also, if I can help to provide a context for how an individual EFL teacher can make sense of the information he/she might find among the number of sources out there (e.g., this site), then that is a benefit as well.

I have posted at ajarn.com and other places where EFL teachers might go to find information (like here). I was not "flogged"; that must have been someone else. I generally check with web management first to make certain I have permission to post and never conduct any interviews on the forum. Having a broad range of websites means that I (hopefully) can attract a broad range of people...that just adds to the study.

So far, things have gone well. Thanks for your interest and I appreciate the questions!
