A hobby ........... I collect dust.
A hobby ........... I collect dust.
I'm knitting a sweater from belly-button lint.
Good effort KW.
I will carve a little Russell Crowe from a piece of red cedar thats been lying around after some DIY and expresspost once the little guy is ready.
^Your ship looks good though.
^ True, it is fine craftmanship.
yes KW, even I have to admit the ship does look good. well done you twat
Does that hobby require a lot of maintenance?
Can I have one? I'll pay for Shipping, postage.
Agreed, and thanks for sharing pics of your hobby KW. It's a very cool hobby indeed!(though I do agree about losing the white border round the St. George
KW, how much have you paid for the whole thing?
^ it came as a kit, complete with some tools and spare parts and all the thread and nails and bits of wood etc needed. I've bought a few extra carving tools and buckets of glue etc - but nothing reall costly. some of the metal pieces are already die cast.
but most eveythign else has to be built and carved to the blueprints
i think the kit cost about $200 (it was given to me as a birthday present.)
Oh.. I thought it's cheaper than that.Originally Posted by kingwilly

^ i guess it also depends on the size and complexity of the boat.
this one is bladdy big and complex - i imagine you could get smaller ones that are just as interesting...
bear in mind i've been building it on and off for about 4 years now!
The actual collecting is not that time consuming, it works out that it is roughly equal to 24 hours a day...... it's the sorting the different particles that can be time consuming, especially if you want to label them..... but that's advanced dust collecting..... I'm still on the basics, but I have totally mastered remaining motionless for long periods of time.
for about the first year i spent close to an hour a day (generally couldnt do more cos would be waiting for parts to dry glue etc.) most days of the week on it.
since then i've had occasions when i'd spend a few days on it and then a week or more when i've not touched it.
sorta depends on my mood.
ur damn right, so I got back onto it today....
sort of takes up most of the dining room table, but the missus prefers me to work on the boat rather than 'waste time' on TD....
firstly I got out the wood and ordered them in thickness.
now the spars for the first mast I built separately this time i've decided to do the lot all at once...
lined them up on the blue prints, and cut the centre squares out and then all the round dowls, lined them up so i'd know wot was wot....
then it was a case of sanding the ends square and smooth ready to glue together, then i gotta wait for it to dry properly.
that first one is looking crooked, grrr, I'm gonna have to cut it and reglue and reset it!
tomorrow I'll then then to sand all the round ends so they taper gradually all the way.
quite enjoy it.

It's looking good KW ... good to see that you have found your focus.
I know this thread is a little like watching paint dry, but i have been building this bladdy thing for 4 years now, its almost finished, i'm not sure what i'll do when its done!
anyway, some of the top masts ...
and sails - just cos i felt like doing them...
