I've bought a dog and the wife is threatening to leave...

Bought a fine long haired Border Collie puppy yesterday.
The kids are over the moon and even clearing up his mess!(they wanted a dog so bad).
I must admit it's a fine intelligent k9, you only have to tell it once and it obeys.

Healthy shiny coat, wet nose, 6 months old.
Problem is the Thai wife does not want it saying they are to much responsibility in England and stink the house out.

She want's it gone! Any suggestions?? We've bought her flowers..

Off out for a long walk with the mutt and kids

    Tricky one.

However, you first need to find out whether she really does not want the dog in the house (shedding, cleaning etc), or whether she is just simply pissed that you went ahead and got it without involving her in the decision making and choosing process.

Frankly, in my humble opinion, you are going to pay big time for that little mistake....

    Nice dog by the way.

^ Agree, you've just bought yourself about 14 years of direct "I told you so's" and then a lifetime of indirect ones after it carks.

Yep...tough one. The kids have already become attached to the dog. The wife is pissed (BTW, I see her point. I don't have any inside dogs. Nor am I about to go around cleaning up after one. Also not following it around with a shit scooper. My dogs have plenty of room to run around outside. If they didn't, I wouldn't have them.)

I agree with Nidhogg...you're gonna pay.

I'm betting the dog stays and after a short honeymoon with the kids, your wife will end up in charge of care and feeding. And you will pay every time the dog does something wrong.

I think you need to take the wife and dog together for a walk and find out exactly what the problem is.

Does your wife have any experience with a well house trained "farang" dog or only with at best poorly trained Thai dogs or worse only soi/feral dogs. Does your wife have an inbuilt fear of dogs? The puppy is OK but maybe she is worried what it will be like when it is older.

Dog is man's best friend for a reason! You have to train it, exercise it, feed it etc.

But sounds like a matriarchal response to the dog being in "her" house. Or the realization that the dog will always he happy to see you upon your return regardless of what level of reception she had planned.

Tell her woman who put man in dog house, soon find him in cat house.
Better to think inside the pub, than outside the box?
I apologize if any offence was caused. unless it was intended.

Border Collies are really great animals, probably the smartest and most personable of all the breeds, they are also very protective of their family. Excellent choice.
The wife will get used to him/her. Thai people are generally good dog people.

Tell her the alternative is a pitbull, like those owned by the other drug dealers. That will soon bring her round.

When you're going shopping with the wife shout 'Walkies'. Not so easy to train perhaps but she'll get familiar with your commands!

hopefully this story relates a bit to yours and gives you a breath of hope....

about three months ago, someone left a kitten in a plastic bag outside of her aunt's house, just a stones throw away from my place.
my gal, a self professed hater of cats, somehow found it in her to bring it home.
it was i'm guessing 3 weeks old, but still should have been on the tit. but the worst thing was, besides it's scabby eyes and nose & malnourished body, it's back legs were totally disfunctional.
i'm not pissed off, but thinking at most it will cost me about half a can of tuna and 3 minutes on a shovel to dig a small hole when it dies.
i figured it had been run over, or kicked and was paralyzed....i didn't think it had broken legs because i could pick it up and it wasn't in any pain.
so i just started feeding it tuna and scrambled eggs, it had a crazy big appetite.
eventually, i noticed it's back legs were functioning, not much at the start but it was trying.
i went offshore for 4 weeks and came back and the cat was nearly normal. my gal has it in the house, gives it a shower every other day, meticulously goes over it for ticks.
it's gone from a hopeless case in a 7-11 bag to possibly the most pampered house cat in n.e. thailand.
it's a constant source of entertainment for us both.

anyways....what i'm trying to say is, maybe the worm will turn and your missus will fall in love with that gorgeous dog.

I would have to say that your comment shows you know little about (a) Thais, (b) women and, especially, (c) Thai women.

That dog would be toast within three months in your scenario.

c'mon necron, i was hoping this bittersweet story would garner a better reply than that.

we've had rat in this household but draw the line at cat, bat, and wombat....well, cat and wombat for sure.

There is a simple test which can assist you in coming to the correct decision in situations like this:

Lock both wife and dog in the boot of the car and go down the pub for a couple of hours.

When you return keep whichever one is happier to see you.
