I understand that, but The BBC would do well to find another way to find its funding as do many other forms of social entertainment, Royal ballet etc.

it's funding model is the same. Go to the ballet, you buy a ticket.
Have a telly, they assume you will at some point watch BBC, so buy a licence.
Can't tell me all those blokey dickheads in the video don;t watch top gear....

That said, national broadcasters are a bit of a dinosaur, they don't perform the purpose for which they were created which was to provide news and content unbiased by commercial considerations.

ABC is a hotbed of left leaning nanny state commies day in day out.
