I find it interesting that a career civil servant, and a highly successful and effective one at that, has carried the double burden of guilt from the catholic church and being gay.

It won't be long before it is not only legal in the armed forces, but compulsory. Perhaps all the dinosaurs will spontaneously combust when that day arrives?

I've known several gay dips, even back to the 80s. A few Germans, Dutch and a Belgian couple even.
Heck, even the German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Guido Westerwelle, is gay . . . the ex Aussie Finance Minister, Penny Wong even had a child with her lesbian partner.

Really time for the world to grow up and simply accept that one's sexual orientation isn't a guide to being an effective public servant

Exactly. Burgess, Maclean, Blunt, and Philby spring to mind.

Nice of the FT interviewer to translate steak hache et frites for us, as if we, and the average FT reader, didn't know it meant hamburger and chips, the fucking condescending little prick.

The article is full of this shit and quite irritated me. Wearing a fucking tie isn't uncomfortable at all; if it is too fucking tight, just loosen it.

If two grown men (are they both queer?) witter on like this, then no fucking wonder we're all heading up queer street without a fucking paddle.

And what is this nonsense that he knew he was queer when he was 10? And then suppressed this infantile epiphany for another 30 years before he admitted to himself he was indeed a homosexual??? And then, after 20 years of "frustration" he finally outs himself to the distaff? Aged 60 plus???

I'm sorry, but this is as plausible as a concrete parachute.

Who here can truly remember what it was like to be 10? And just how does a 10 year old demonstrate his "homosexual" tendencies?

    Total bollocks.

    Philby wasn't a poof.

J.Edgar Hoover was, though. And liked to wear tights etc.

    Quite the presumption, Moog.
I'm guessing very few members [the intelligent ones] would be up to swallow any drivel that derives from circles like the FT.....well, on second thought -

The Financial Times is nothing short of a mouth piece for the ruling establishment.

It was not until his late thirties, when he was already married and had a child, that he fully acknowledged to himself that he was gay. And it was more than 20 years later, when his wife Catharine found a gay magazine belonging to him, that he finally came out to his family.
Put this in context Gent. He had his first homosexual experience in 1956 at a Cathoilic boarding school. Probably caught wanking with another boy and shamed by it, (ironically).
It was still illegal until 1967. No wonder he was repressed and afraid to admit it, even to himself. I'm surprised he didn't hang himself or become a priest in order to atone for the horror of being caught wanking.
While I agree there is far too much publicity about the gay, especially celebrity gay, this story demonstrates how it has been, and continues to be seen by the righteous majority, and why some might feel the need to speak out about it.
If it becomes too much for you, resign or use the ignore function.
Should you be aware of your negative feelings toward the gay, don't open threads and comment on posts with the word gay in it.

The Establishment does not rule: it exists within a framework governed by whichever orthodoxy that may prevail at any given time. It is not an entity in itself, nor can it be since it comprises individuals subject to change in much the same way the wind might blow. As a reference point it has a validity but that is by no means a definition or a confirmation of identity other than as an amorphous and largely imaginary cliche conveniently labelled by those who are manifestly not of the Establishment.

In other words, Jeff, there is no such thing save for what you choose to believe.

Yes, at a time when homosexuality was almost a hanging offence. I was sexually active at 10 years old, investigating the difference between Denise MacDonald and her male peer group for the price of a bubble gum. I may not have realised at the time that prostitution was illegal, but I was getting a formal and accepted lesson in gender anatomy.
Did you honestly believe wanking would make you go blind and sex was dirty when you first discovered women?
The protests of the righteous bullies on here belongs in a bygone age.
I don't believe in marriage or god and I don't think darts should be classified as a sport, but if others want to enjoy that freedom I say let 'em.

If that were the case then you were statistically abnormal and somewhat of a freak.

For most of us the onset of puberty did not begin until 12 yrs old.

Investigating anatomical gender differences has little to do with puberty. You really are coming across as quite gauche, unless of course you can put your comments into some kind of real world context.
Did you experience some kind of sexual trauma as a child?
