I think it grew largely due to the Smith charisma. After Smith was gunned down he became a their martyr, which futher enhanced his bullshit. Brigham Young subsequently picked up the leadership and proved to be the right guy for the times.

If you haven't read the Krakauer book, ya should, very interesting how this cult is sweeping the globe.
