Farang is not a bad word.
You were probably never insulted but you are expecting your wife to have words with a policeman.
Surely you can see that is not fair.

I've lived here that long that i don't feel comfortable with it.
i will never ever refer to myself as a farang and neither will i label any other white people as one.
it's rude.
i put my wife in an awkward position granted.
I made a mistake.
But I will tell every person that refers to me as the farang not to do so in future and it would help our cause not to accept it blithely.
I'm fed up with it.
Would you really accept someone in England calling your wife.."the Thai?"
why should it be any different here.
are our expectations that low?
I have no problem with the word.
I accept that the speaker probably means no disrespect.
I use the word all the time.
Why get yourself wound up when no-one means you any ill will ?
You have to chill out and accept it.
I doubt it.Originally Posted by Thetyim

Indeed ... always wondered if the locals have an equivalent of "farang" for such chaps.Originally Posted by Marmite the Dog

Foreigners hating you is a sign of your superiority. If, being a superior non-jewish white-man you don't have a girlfriend or, indeed, friends, remember that that's a sign of your superiority. Rejoice! Aryan Jesus loves you.

In all honesty, while i don't think that the word farang is a disrespectful term on it's own, i think it can be used in a disrespectful manner, and that depends on the context. FriscoFrankies example is a good one where the context tells you that it is not being used in an inappropriate way. In CMN's situation, i would personally consider that the policeman was being rude.
He's talking to CMN's wife FFS, what's wrong with asking 'where's your husband?', if he really wants to know where CMN is. Surely that would differentiate far better between CMN and any other farangs roaming around that area of Chang Mai? Just because he's Thai, it doesn't mean that he doesn't realise that that is not the polite way to ask his question.
If anything, it sounds like his comment was probably more designed to be a small dig at CMN's wife by not acknowledging her husband in an appropriate manner, as he didn't know that CMN could hear.
People saying 'you shouldn't be pissed off because farang is not an offensive word', are missing the point somewhat, in my opinion. It sounds like there is a chance that the guy was being intentionally rude in his manner of speak.
If i had been CMN overhearing that exchange, i would have been straight across the road asking him what he wanted. In a reasonably polite (but not too much so) way, of course. Finding out whether he did have a reason for his enquiry or not would probably have established the motivation behind his comment.
I think that it's not worth CMN getting too worked up about this, it is only a minor sleight and a minor issue. I also think that he shouldn't be pissed off with his wife either, because chances are that this is one of the few occasions when he has happened to catch this sort of exchange happening. She might have to put up with disrespectful behavior on a more frequent basis than he realises because of her choice of partner, when he is not around to overhear it.
Thank you for that post Fast Eddie.
It's what I have been trying to get at.
Hey, Nooners stop being so sensitive or you are going to be unhappy everyday.
I have done this to try and cheer you up.
Now go and tell your wife you love her. Go on. Off you go.
A SitePal Has Been Created For You!
Noony Baboony.
I'm a bit scared by that sitepal thingy
How did it know who I was or did you create that before?
Does it know who I am?
CMN,
You are going to shorten your life if you worry about shit like this. Simple as that. We will never be accepted other than as a farang. Even celbrities like Andrew Biggs are only tolerated cause he looks like a wingnut.
Maybe it's time for a break from Thailand. Does wonders for the place to get away for a bit.
