How to fix a running toilet?

I need to fix the running water in our downstairs bathroom toilet. I've googled the subject and all the instructions start with:

Step 1: Remove the lid from the cistern.

But how do you get the bloody lid off the cistern?

It's not a regular lid, it's one of those ones with the 2 buttons on top like this.

I haven't tried forcing it for fear of causing damage.

Any help would be great. Cheers

Push the buttons in and try to wind out the ring the circles them?

I just checked mine, just lifts straight off the same and the usual ones.

It's got 2 lengths of plastic that are connected to the buttons on top and they just locate, not physically connected to the cistern itself.

    If that makes sense....

    Nearly forgot, FP you tart!!

As said you need to unscrew the outer ring. Lift off the cistern top and then bend down the float to stop the water entering the cistern and also scrape around the outlet to ensure the plug sits snugly when it drops back in place. I used to have to do the same thing to all mine before I sold the place
Treat everyone as a complete and utter idiot and you can only ever be pleasantly surprised !

If your water is running into the cistern after you flushed the toilet and it does not stop you should be able to adjust the screw in there on the ballcock arm and that should do the job unless your ballcock is knackered then just replace it.All that is happening is that the valve is not closing and just lets in more water.its an easy fix I think.

Why does the terminology in this thread read like a buggering manual?

FP, good luck with your toilet; pic thread - toilet plumbing for Thai beginners.

Totally unnecessary. Just tie its legs together....that'll slow it down some.

Oh and yes.....mine is the same and just lifts off too. No screws at all

Is it just a trickle or a stead stream??

If it's just a trickle then it sounds like you've got a dirt or grit on your flap to me

O.k. I've totally failed at the first hurdle. I've tried the comments and watched the video's and I still can't get the bloody top off.

Also the wife has just informed me that the toilet in her bathroom has the same problem so now I need to fix two.

Downstairs bathroom is a trickle that stops if you press the button up and down a few times.

The wifes bathroom is also a trickle but it doesn't stop when you press the button a few times.

If I press the button down then there are some lines which look a bit like a cassette crank set on a mountain bike so I'm wondering if it needs a special tool. Like a crank set remover.

There is no twisting able to be done here.

I can get my fingers under it an lift it up a little but it won't pop off like in the second video. It feels like its connected to a tube that goes right to the bottom of the cistern.

I can lift the lid a little like this from both sides but the fucker won't go much further.

My bathroom works totally fine with no problems which means we are far more superior at taking shits than Thai's
