Interesting - at least to me!

So, was looking through one of the "Cracked" photoplasty competitions (great site by the way, well worth a look over).

The theme was "Shocking Facts That Will Change How You Picture History".

Just got to number 29 (starting down from 33), and got this one:

    Went and check it out:

U.S. Government Still Pays Two Civil War Pensions - Washington Whispers (usnews.com)

and yup - it does seem legit.

How awesome is that? The last verified Civil War veteran, Albert Woolson, died in 1956 at age 109. The last widow, Gertrude Janeway, died in 2003 at age 93 (from article), and the two drawing pensions are kids of people who fought in the American civil war. They are obviously quite elderly.

So, civil war to today, near enough two life times.

    Is progress awesome or what?

actually, there are some other cool ones as well:

I guess that's trying to make a point that it wasn't the Shermans that saved us, but the British 2nd Army was in part Canadian. Though that doesn't take anything away from any of the soldiers involved, regardless of their nationality. You'd have to be one brave mother fucker to be involved in the initial assaults.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

You are right on the canadian complement in the British 2nd army:

On D-Day, the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy. The American forces landed numbered 73,000: 23,250 on Utah Beach, 34,250 on Omaha Beach, and 15,500 airborne troops. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British): 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7900 airborne troops.

Tis true however tht the americans bore the brunt of the casualties (from same source as above):

The Allied casualties figures for D-Day have generally been estimated at 10,000, including 2500 dead. Broken down by nationality, the usual D-Day casualty figures are approximately 2700 British, 946 Canadians, and 6603 Americans. However recent painstaking research by the US National D-Day Memorial Foundation has achieved a more accurate - and much higher - figure for the Allied personnel who were killed on D-Day. They have recorded the names of individual Allied personnel killed on 6 June 1944 in Operation Overlord, and so far they have verified 2499 American D-Day fatalities and 1915 from the other Allied nations, a total of 4414 dead (much higher than the traditional figure of 2500 dead).

D-Day was some epically brave shit, regardless of how you arrived there. Terrifying just to think about it...

I like the one about porn. And dang, that chick's got a weapons-grade booty!
