Thai Xenophobia and the Imagination of Some

[this isn't an apology, but sane observation]

Often, we absorb featureless codes of social conduct within the reaches of Thai culture and artful expression of slighted xenophobia within. A staple of subject matter within Thai expat forums, less personalinteractives..

Does this truly exist amongst the population or a fabricated tale from outside observations creating a sociological condition wherein reflecting the nature of the accuser.

I dare to say that those whom explore these superlative ideals of an inferior/superior place them as defence mechanisms to justify their own existence of false superiority - passsed over as one dream or another.

Witness to real Thai society for 40+ years and exposure regarding every imaginable social situation, one would be hard-pressed to see a Thai social infrastructure to be attached to today's conduits of xenophobic attitudes - true, such mind sets might exist within the hardened shell of an elite class circle [historically this is true], but hardly exist amongst the fair population of 64 million....as individuals as a collective.

Lingustic definitives might apply in these selected cases. WTF is xenophobia, as a stated "Western" ideal? Are we quicker, historically, to see others [especially non-western civilisations] bent this way before we might find it in ourselves?

Personally, I'm of the notion that those camps that promote false accusations towards a culture at large don't have a sense of themselves, less truly experiencing the nature of societal movement around them - translated: if you always consider yurself a stranger/foreigner amongst a worthy population, you will always be seen and treated as one.....

Inventing malice and manufacturing sociological whimsy is the truer heart of vacant knowledge.

A strong matrilineal culture needs not to defend itself from Euro-charalatans and ignorantstudies, but only to extend that genuine [or sometimes not] smile in that direction.

You may or may not have a point.

However it does remind me of my early childhood watching "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" when contestants were drawn form the audience for a chance to win prizes.
The final question being "Arrange the following words to make well known sayings or phrases"

    For that I thank you

RS - our own individual upbringing, the the environment where the bringing was upped, we wear like spectacles made up of colour filters. If your upbringing gives you red glasses, you will look at the sky and see a very dark sky with very bright clouds. Same as with people comparing cultures.

I'm a firm believer that significant travel allows one to take of these glasses, or at least, tone down the filters a little. Those who grumble the most are those who typically have moved / holiday in Thailand and they have their home country filters glued to their faces, especially the older folks who are set in their ways and want little Kansas / Britain / Berlin / Stockholm / Moscow / Montreal etc with a different climate, more girls touching their dangly bit, and forget that this will mean a different culture as well.

I have lost count of the number of times I've said that exact same phrase. And - weirdly - people look at me as if I'm speaking Titanese or some other strange alien language. It's gratifying that I am not alone. Greens sent, RS.

Not sure I agree with the OP.

    I think.

Strange that the 1st/2nd/3rd/4th generation sino-Thais appear to be the most xenophobic (although a playing around with the term may be required).

Many whiteys think Thais are xenophobic.

    But what does that mean?

It means whiteys don't like or understand Thais.

If the OP were Thai, a fair translation would be:

"Us? We're xenophobic!?! I know you are; what am I."

If Thais were so culturally xenophobic them most of us would not be living here with so few hassles.

As stated above, it will [and does] exist within officialdom circles.

Certainly, doesn't make these broader social superlatives true amongst the people. Actually, just the opposite is in order - reasonable tolerance and accepting might be the common disposition.

I don't even think it really exists at the official level.
There's always individual exceptions when dealing with officials, but most controls and laws I find reasonable and acceptable.

The land ownership issue and myth can be overcome [not known by most] if one knows a decent Thai lawyer that understands the loop-holes and such.

    Yep, all that.

Dual pricing. You can afford it, Somchai the factory worker can't. Stop whining.

Expat kids? What has were you were born got to do with citizenship. The US does it and created a whole criminal industry based on it. Anyone else do it?

    Land ownership?
Realpolitik. Thailand has stopped itself being sold out to foreigners. Good for them. If you are married what does it matter whose name it is in? In a divorce you get half.

A country has every right and should legislate to maintain its cultural identity. All this lefty liberal crap has ruined the UK and will soon ruin Oz. multiculturalism was fine in Australia until they opened the floodgates to let every immigrant (who usually genuinely appreciated the chance) bring in waves of extended family who conversely, generally don't appreciate or assimilate and look at the whole thing as a free ride.

Unless there's been a major change in usage, 'xenophobia' doesn't mean 'slightly inconveniencing privileged white, middle-aged men'.
