    Karratha... Anything to do here?

I was called away to work at short notice last week to a job in Australia.

Got to Perth on Friday to be told helicopter put back to Tuesday. That was nice - had 1 night at a Crown hotel next to the casino then they moved us to the Hyatt for 3 nights because the Crown was full.

Flew up to Karratha on Tuesday to get the chopper to the boat and about 10 minutes before boarding they called my name out.... Bumped (delayed) until Saturdays helicopter...

So I find myself alone in the town of Kirratha , Pilbara which has a population of about 20000, half of which seem to be Rio Tinto employees.

Anybody ever spent time here? What is there to do apart from use the hotel pool, drink booze from a bottle shop and jerk off in my room? Got no transport so I can't discover the area. Wifi internet signal doesn't even reach my room so have to use the wank bank.

rawlins you have basically summed up Karratha I am afraid. A mining town and not much more - especially without wheels.

If you did have wheels you could pop up the road and visit me as I am only 4 towns away from you.

    Karratha attractions
    • Experience Aboriginal culture by taking a walk along the Jaburara Heritage Trail, which features a number of fascinating petroglyphs, middens and artefacts.
    • Relax and enjoy a game at the town’s golf or bowling clubs.
    • Unwind and take in the beauty of the Staircase to the Moon at Hearson's Cove, just 25 minutes from Karratha. This natural phenomenon is caused by the rising of a full moon reflecting on the exposed mudflats at extremely low tide.
    • Enjoy colourful sunsets and panoramic views while walking along the Jabaura Heritage Trail.
    • Join in the fun and games at the FeNaCIng Festival, held in the first weekend in August. The name comes from the chemical symbols of the region's three main production and export commodities: Iron Ore (Fe), Salt (NaCI) and Natural Gas (NG- not strictly correct but it makes the name work). The Festival is of such importance to the local community the Monday is a Local Government gazetted public holiday.

ANZAC day dawn service is on in the morning. Would be worth checking out. It is on at 6am outside the shire chambers.

Go easy on the free gunfire breakfast though otherwise you may fail your breath test on the rig later on.

Are you staying at the Karratha International hotel?

Head down to the storm water drain next to the bottle shop with a carton of beer and you will have all the mates and loose women you can desire.

You can see now why no one else complained that it was you bumped and not them!

absolute armpit of a place, no reason to be there whatsoever unless somebodys paying you lots of drinking vouchers, without transport you might as well just stay by the hotel pool and drink yourself senseless, or you could hire a car and experience abo culture at its best on dole check day in roebourne, Alternatively there is 1 brothel in town called port of call ( or so ive heard) bring an erection and your wallet, Could be worse though you could be stuck down the road in port hedland

Well, everyone seems to have the same conclusions about the place as I have.

Sorry MeMock... I missed your alarm call. It was a 5:50 am gathering here for the ANZAC service. I was up at the war memorial in Kings Park, Perth the other day at a more reasonable hour and paid my respects then. I am staying at the Karratha International.... Not too bad but I am glad I am not paying the $375 per night - not worth that much. It is 4 star but I think that is based on the amount of TV channels it has. Food is nice, poolside or in the bar.

WA booze prices at a bar are similar to Norway prices these days so I am getting through a different bottle of wine each day from the attached bottle shop. Few movies and Boardwalk Empire to catch up on.

There are a few Asian door to door escort girls advertising in the local rag but my expenses wouldn't stretch to the fees they charge for a 'massage'.

Not sure the street name but it was in the light industrial area, its been about 7 or 8 years since ive had the pleasure of being trapped in Karratha, ( used to work for Rio,) i reckon those birds selling flange gaskets in Karratha will be absolutely coining it. thats after paying a couple of grand a week for rent, food, electricity etc ( you have to run aircon 24/7 it gets fuckin hot.
Having said all that if youve a mate with a boat the fishings great

    Regards the Aboriginal issue.

I reckon all these wankers from over seas who say that us Australians are racist should one day visit Karratha, Roeburn or Port Hedland and then move onto Darwin so they can receive a lesson from our beloved brothers ans see them in full flight.

Fuk me Eh, Cant someone just nuke those towns.

But you are racist Terry. I live in Kununurra and see all the same problems but don't feel the need to talk about them they way that you do.

Hi Rawlins, that's a shame you missed it. Was just 200m down the road from your hotel. Our dawn service was great. Saw over 1,000 people there at 4.30am. Not a bad turn out for such a small town.

No mate I'm not racist, out of all the worlds population I only have this opinion of the Brothers.

I'm not the only one by the way.

Cheers and there all yours. So many tourists to our country are enlightened when they view then up North in full flight and realize what we are up against and the problems they cause in our society.

Bumped in KrackTown, nasty. I've spent my fair share of time there in '08 when I worked for Schlum. Talk about dire straights.

You could get down the Tav, play pool or gamble next door in the bookies or get a carry out next door to that. Wednesday is the night, new Skimpies on rotation.

You could head up to Point Samson for some excellent fish and chips.

You can go to the brothel and wait in line at reception.

You can go for Thai food.

There is a hill you can climb for a better understanding of the hell you are in.

    Deep sea fishing in Dampier

There is a DVD rental shop (must be worth millions)

    Kill yourself.

Broome is worth a look, and in WA terms it's just a short hop- 830km. (there's a flight service between them, you might be relieved to hear).
Otherwise get into fishing (top notch), become alcoholic, or go mad. Console yourself- at least you're not in Pt Hedland!
