    Bringing books alive

I'm reading a book at the moment, My Colombian death, by Matthew Thompson,
the book takes you to Bogota, Colombia's capital ( a place not on my itinerary )
then on to Barranquilla on Colombia's Caribbean coast, the book is average, but
it comes to life when I google the hotel the main craracter stays in the first
night in Bogota, a 5 star hotel called de la Opera, and then check out the sleazy
parts of town he stays in after that.

Then I you-tube the carnival that he nearly gets his nuts cut off in Barranquilla,
talk about getting lost inside a book.

Prolly the thing I miss most. My eyes are too fucked up to tackle a book, even if I had the time.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. What utter crap. That is a great part of the dumbing down of the society we now live in.

I disagree. A picture inevitably draws the attention of the observer to the piece that validates a held preconception - this can always be found - and thereby moves the attention away from the message/argument/point the writer wishes to convey.

Witness the 'art' of discussion these days. It is simply a war of clips and pictures, and nobody ever gets the other side's point.

Of course. Not trying to be pedantic. Just arguing a point that doesn't relate directly to that, but that I brought up.

WOW !!! Just had a quick look at Mr Earl's travel thread, what great pics,
I will have to set a day aside and read the whole thread.

The closest I got to Colombia, was Peru, Machu Picchu twice.

Ha ha. Nope, Flipper TV is worse than Thai. But, I have a good source for counterfeit DVD's.

Books, I miss books and access to good selections. I miss Bangkok's book stores. I'll have to make a road trip soon.
