    A Germany Appreciation Thread.

There appears of late, to be on TD many comments on Germany and the Germans that might possibly be perceived as negative. I thought therefore that this might be a good opportunity to adjust the balance in a brief appreciation of the various aspects of German culture.

Last New Year I was back in Munich renewing my love of German dunkel and weiss beer, (the best in the world), wiener schnitzel, bratwurst and tall blonde frauleins. This might be perceived by some, as a kind of stereotype amusement on my part. But then, Germans being the leaders of Europe have a right to indulge. The inhabitants work hard and are passionate about lifestyle and politics. Germans are not, contrary to stereotypes, stubborn. They are just argumentative. Things have to be logical to them or they will argue about it until they find the logic. Now that logic does not have to be based in physics or maths, but it does have to fit with their view of what is the correct way to live.

Then of course there are other aspects. In literature, Germany is known as “das Land der Dichter und Denker” (The Land of Poets and Thinkers). Famous German poets included Goethe, Schiller and Heine. Likewise in music, there were Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and in Psychology Freud and Jung.

    They make some good beer.
They can be very precise and make high quality goods.
They made really good machine guns.
I like sauerkraut and roast boar.
    Their sausages are putrid.
Their focus on precision is often their downfall.
Lederhosen are both totally gay and surprisingly comfortable.

Jung was Swiss and Mozart was Austrian. Angela Merkin, on the other hand, is a proper Jerry.

They did have the coolest uniforms and kit. There's a reason for that.
A young Hugo Boss was their uniform designer

Okay...I have experienced many friends from many backgrounds...I have some wonderful German friends, some whom I grew up with, and others I met along the way...

I know it can be hard at times not to generalize when speaking of others who are not "the same as us"...

When I find myself on the verge of doing this, usually in times of frustration or anger, I take the time to think of the really good people of that nationality whom I have known, and admired...

I find that one can too easily fall into the trap of "narrow-mindedness"...perhaps the same state of mind we disliked so much when we were younger...

Ah, the innocence of youth...distorted and perverted given time and happenstance...

the most famous german of all times is probably boris becker...

he is very much liked all over the world - closely followed by michael schumacher... in soccer its oliver kahn (keeper), who impressed much...

all those three are not so popular in germany, and are treated badly and often beaten up (in the news etc)... but internationally its very much the opposite...

I know you are an afficienado of beer having seen previous posts of yours and am very surprised you dont like German wheat beer.
I remember your post of home brew but the wheat beer with so few additives gives no hangover at all - just right.
That German Brewhaus on Suk. soi 11 ?, does some great stuff on draught (or did, aint visited for a year).

    1. I stand corrected. Freud was born in a place which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in fact part of the Czech Republic. Lived most of his life in Germany though.
    2. Necron. Might I suggest you try “Knackwurst,” which is an all-beef short and stubby sausage flavored with garlic. Delicious with sauerkraut or potato salad.
    3. Necron. If lederhosen are gay, its macho compared to the Greek national dress for men.
    4. Socal what can I say? Ein blindes Huhn findet auch mal ein Korn. (A blind chicken finds a grain once in a while.) Keep trying, cluck cluck.

Well, Greeks are Greek for a reason.
Lederhosen is gay, but as I said, surprisingly comfortable, even in a hot environment.
    I stand by that.
