This word irritates me. Not because it's an insult, but because it just isn't. Maybe someone can dig up stats of the % of the world's human-like population, of all sexes (not just both, we have a wonderful brave new world) , who isn't?

So why do otherwise seemingly semi-literate Brits and their offspring continue to use it as one. Can someone please explain the deep hidden meaning? It's something one would expect to find on a playground.

a spinster is a lady married to a spinning wheel
a bastard is someone whose parents didn't toe the party line
a wanker gets his jollies in private and doesn't share,,, borrrrrring.
why do we say it's an insult
as usual ,it makes people feel superior
even though they're probably wankers themselves and would be shocked and embarrassed to discover that someone somewhere knows it.
is it because people try to hide it and are red faced to discover that their cover

this is where it gets weird and rightly so

Should be a law against Americans preaching about how to use someone else's language.

Don't be so anal and pedantic, FF. Everyone knows 'wanker' in it's literal sense, and also know that it has come to be an insult to describe a tosser, twat, cocksucker, etc. What word would you have to describe them / us?

Out of curiosity what the take on the differences between a tosser and a wander, Ive always thought that a wander did in private and a tosser did it in public.... but I am begging to have doubts.
