    Pomposity and circumstances

Yesterday I was on the computer listening to the TV in the background. Suddenly, it sounded as if a Cecil B. Demille epic movie had come on. Perhaps a scene of Jesus entering Jerusalem. Turning to watch, I found that US presidential candidate Romney had just announced his vice presidential running mate, Paul Ryan. At first I thought that I must be watching Fox News' overblown coverage of all things Republican. But no, it was on ABC. So, why all the hoopla?

Consider the last couple of Republican vice presidential candidates: Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin. The candidates that the Republicans run tend to be less than desirable. Not someone that I would ever want to see in the role of President. So now they are wanting to run Paul Ryan. He seems to be a competent, level headed sort. Totally out of character for a Republican. I believe he would have made a far better presidential candidate than Romney.

So, that's why all the hype. He is actually looked at as their savior. Someone capable of making the Romney candidacy acceptable to a larger part of the electorate, and greatly increasing Romney's chances of winning this fall.

The obvious question is, of course, who cares? Look back over the last dozen years. Cheney was able to do substantial damage to the world in his role as vice president. What if McCain/Palin had won four years ago. The chances of Palin being elevated to president (McCain now being 75 years old) were too high. Can anyone imagine the damage that someone with Palin's intellect could have done to the US and the world from that position.

Yes, but what you have to realise is that these people represent the top echelon of American politicians. They have no alternative other than to have people like this. As my granny used to say, "if you don't have socks, you can't pick them up".

It does beg the question though - how in the world of fuck can someone as potentially dangerous as that get that close to the button?

    Another one preserved for posterity.

The sort of Republicans I'd support for office, such as Mitch Daniels & Jon Huntsman, don't even get a look-in with the current teabag infused GOP. But at least it's an honest choice- Rubio would have just been an utter joke, like sarah barracuda.

They'll lose, again, and whilst it's a fairly rash call to make this early, I think the GOP will lose ground in the mid-terms too. By that point, the party machine will hopefully realise it has to fundamentally change, or it is heading for irrelevance.

I really liked what I saw of Jon Huntsman. But as you say, he never stood a chance with those who have taken over the Republican Party. The more I see of Romney, the less I like him. Unfortunately, that was also true of Obama.

In the end, whoever gets elected, my best hope is they don't screw up the world as badly as Bush/Cheney.

It's very sad for the world that America , with its huge resources, is unable to find men of integrity as its leaders. Everything seems to be conditioned by money. Any anti-American sentiments expressed by me are due to the frustration I feel because of this.

America should be a great nation leading the world forward to become a better place for all humanity. It isn't.
Why can't I make new posts?

I'd worry more about the reverse happening when Obama stays. The rightwing nutters in America won't be able to deal with it. They should be happy with Obama staying as it is not going to be easy to get out of the economic mess the nation is in. If Romney and Ryan get in they won't be able to pass blame. With a person being president for 8 years, its hard not to blame him for changing the situation.

Why do you say that? Its time for America to shift gears alright, but send the responsibility for global policing to someone else. Moral/Ethical compass is lost.
