just the same, you have it for whatever purpose you need it.

Speaking of lizards, yesterday it was raining heavily here in Ban Chang at the Villa Sea Traveler just East of the Utapao. I was in my office and there are windows on my right that look out to the front gate and tiled driveway. I got up to get some water melon out of the fridge and had to do a double take when I looked out onto the driveway. There was what looked at first glance to be a 1 meter long crocodile slowly walking into my walled property from the gate. It was was actually into the property by 10 meters. I hurried to get my camera and went to the living room windows and was going to raise the screen and step out onto the raised veranda so that I could capture a few good pictures of this creature. I had the camera and was watching the critter before opening the screen. I could see clearly and determine now that it was not a croc but a large lizard about a meter in length.

As soon as I threw open the screen, this lizard high tailed it out of the property the same way he came in but covered the distance in about 4 seconds and was back outside the gate. I saw it cross the soi and go into the neighbors property. 555! No photos I'm sorry to report.

I never expected to see this lizard on my driveway tile so keep the M16 handy DK as you never know what going to be headed your way. Sounds like you have all bases covered though so good on you...

A one-meter monitor is just a medium-sized guy around here. I did a short thread some time ago about one of the big bastards sending my big tough dog home howling like the devils of hell were behind him. Also big snakes. Neighbor killed a python over seven meters long about four years ago.

^There was a series of break-ins here about a year ago; about 13 houses. Five houses, on all sides of us, got hit. We were like an oasis - untouched. Always people around the house, five big dogs, high compound walls with good lighting, and a general knowledge that there are more heavily armed people in the house than an infantry squad probably were all factors. Entire guard force was subsequently fired - break-ins stopped immediately. Go figure........

^I've lived here in this area for the past nine years - every single break-in or house robbery has been an inside job - without exception. They have been few and far between, however, except for the wave I described above.

Money's not an issue. I just picked up the M-16 because it was too cheap to pass up. I could resell it today for four times what I paid for it. Rather than paying $800 bucks to dress my $100 gun up as an M4, I could probably just buy a stolen M4 here for $500 or $600.

Davis, would you say there is more crime involving guns there than in LOS? Once in a while at my sister's in Los Angeles, you can hear people shooting for whatever reason- probably just into the sky. Ammo is probably cheaper than there in the Philippines Do you ever here shots in your area? Do they have that teen gang stuff going on?

Probably similar levels of crimes with firearms here and in LOS - just better quality firearms here. No teen gang stuff here, but I live in a semi-rural area. Some of that frat crap in Manila, just like in Bangkok. Don't often hear random shots here. If so, probably a party with some idiot shooting into the air or, more likely, somebody capping a snake or dog. Other than during local elections, when the wise stay home.

I have wanted to visit the Phills for years but the random violence and dependence on guns just turns me off.

I'm sure I'm just paranoid but threads like this just reinforce that I don't really need to go there.

Shame really as I'm sure theres some cracking places to visit.

I've only ever handled a gun once. I think I was about 20, and this very dull friend of a friend, who incidentally was only about 5' tall and called Brian, decided to show off his new toy. He passed it round, and we all said how nice it was, then we all went home.

From then on, we referred to Brian by his new nickname - the Small Bore.

^^Like any other place, Terry. Idiots find trouble. Most violence here, like most other places, is local on local. Few crimes against foreigners - even fewer violent crimes against foreigners. And those are always against long-time residents (business disputes). An experienced traveler such as you would have no problem at all - as long as you stay out of parts of Mindanao where there is no reason to go in any case. There are some great places here - fabulous diving, lots to see.

right, 1 meter lizard just medium sized but just the same, it's always a thrill to see one and on my property too. Considerations to just let it go, try and capture it, call the neighbor and let them try and capture it, kill it, or just try and scare it away??? Fortunately he was scared away with the opening of the window screen. Now the thought is, "will it reappear again some time in the future.

and snakes, right, got some of those also. Took the cycle up the road 200 meters and turned onto a dirt road between some tapioca plants and saw a snake black in color and about 3 meters long the full length across the dirt soi 1o meters in front of us. STOP! Turn around. Don't wanna know what kind of snake. Just wanto to get out of there. Don't think it was a King cobra because of the black color ot this one that we saw. I'd say it was 10 inches in diameter at it's thickest point. Maybe a cobra or some kind of constrictor... not sure and don't care. Wasn't a rat snake as I can usually spot them... labors building the house a few years ago used to catch them and roast them on the fire at night to eat with their beer drinking.

    //BREAK//

just came home from the market with the bride. green tree snake on the patio. got the 9 meter long bamboo pole with the net on the end of it. scoop up the snake and walk him down the road to throw into the field.

    Mission accomplished. Miller Time!

^Lizards around my house tend to be big monitors. Snakes are either pythons or cobras - quite a few of each. This is a huge housing development with lots of undeveloped land (my 2.5 leased hectare farm is a small part of it), but as more land is cultivated, and more houses go up, the lizards and snakes are seen more often - at least until such a time as they will be wiped out.

^^ sounds like you live in Asia outside a muban, How they get in I will never know.

^ sounds like my house, we have two big ones. The floods could not get them, but the dry klong has, where they have gone and if they will come back is anybodys guess. By the way it has rained and the klong is beginning to come back.

^^When the klong fills up, they'll be back.....they've probably been holed up in a sewer pipe.
