Kentucky Derby predictions: AI picks winner, results for 2025 Triple Crown race

The field is set and the post positions have been drawn for the 2025 Kentucky Derby, and oddsmakers and artificial intelligence agree there's a clear favorite to win the first leg of horse racing's Triple Crown this year.

Journalism has the best chance to win the 151st running of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs according to the odds listed on the official website of the race. It was also the pick when USA TODAY Sports asked Microsoft Copilot AI to run a simulation based on the latest odds, predictions and race factors.

Journalism is unbeaten in five career races with four-straight wins, including the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 5 by three-quarters of a length. It drew the favorable No. 8 starting post, which has produced the second-most Kentucky Derby winners all-time.

But AI didn't believe the rest of the race finish would go by the initial odds. Here's a breakdown of the Kentucky Derby predictions made by Microsoft Copilot AI, including its picks to win, show and place when the 2025 Triple Crown commences at Churchill Downs on Saturday:

My first Derby was the hundredth, in ‘74.
    I made 10 straight from, ‘77 to ‘86., but
haven’t been back since ‘92. Great memories, blurred by a shit load of alcohol.

I have not been as fortunate. The girlfriend saw it on TV a couple years ago and told me she wanted me to take her. I told her we might need to make plans a year out if we wanted to go.

Hopefully within a couple years we will be able to say we were there and watched it.

Churchill Downs was in the midst of a nearly $1 billion renovation project. They just announced a couple days ago, that they are indefinitely pausing the project, due to all the turmoil in Washington.

    Just read about the pause.

"A lot has changed in the world in the past nine weeks since that (February announcement), including increased general economic uncertainty and risk of significant inflation, driven in part by the new tariffs that the U.S. intends to charge on products from almost every country in the world," Carstanjen said. "This has created unanticipated and currently unquantifiable expected cost increases in most materials."

Mr. Carstanjen is doing the right thing.

    Longines Kentucky Oaks

    Friday, May 2, 2025

The Longines Kentucky Oaks, now celebrating its 151st running, is AmericaÂ’s premier race for 3-year-old fillies. Held each year the day before the Kentucky Derby, the Oaks offers a $1.5 million purse and awards the winner the iconic 'Lilies for the Fillies' garland. As one of the longest-running sporting events in U.S. history, the Oaks is steeped in tradition and meaning. Oaks Day is also a celebration of breast cancer awareness, with fans embracing the 'Pink Out' tradition by wearing shades of pink to honor this meaningful cause.
