For the second year in a row and the fifth time in the past seven years, a transfer quarterback has won the Heisman Trophy.

LSU's Jayden Daniels, who began his college career at Arizona State before transferring to Baton Rouge in 2022, won the sport's most prestigious individual award Saturday night after accounting for 4,946 yards of offense (3,812 passing yards, 1,134 rushing yards) and 50 total touchdowns this season.

Daniels received 503 first-place votes and 2,029 total points to beat out two fellow transfer quarterbacks in Washington's Michael Penix Jr. (292 first place, 1,701 total) and Oregon 's Bo Nix (51 first place, 885 total), as well as Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. (20 first place, 352 total) in a ceremony held at Lincoln Center in New York City. Florida State's Jordan Travis placed fifth after receiving eight first-place votes for 85 total points.

Daniels' 328-point margin of victory over Penix marked the closest Heisman voting since 2018, when Oklahoma's Kyler Murray won with 2,167 points over Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's 1,871.

Daniels said winning the Heisman was "a dream come true."

"I want to thank all my teammates, from Arizona State to LSU," Daniels said. "You're my brothers. You work so hard every day, inspiring me to be my best."

Daniels, a 22-year-old from San Bernardino, California, is the first player since 2016 to win the Heisman as part of a team that did not play for a conference title. The No. 13 Tigers will play Wisconsin in the ReliaQuest Bowl on Jan. 1, though Daniels has not yet decided if he will play.

"I really wish I could have brought you back another championship," Daniels said as he thanked the LSU fans.

Daniels led all FBS players in QBR (95.7), yards per attempt (11.7, an FBS record) and passing touchdowns (40), as well as completions of 20 yards or more (70). His 72.2 completion percentage was seventh in the nation, while his total offensive yards per game (412.2) were first, 74 yards better than the next best player.

As a runner, Daniels was topped by only 25 running backs in yards per game, and his 8.4 rushing yards per attempt was good enough for fourth in FBS among all running backs. In every season since he entered college, Daniels has improved upon his output as a runner, more than tripling his 2019 rushing yards total in 2023.

A four-star recruit out of Cajon High School in San Bernardino, Daniels first committed to ASU in 2018 before winning the starting quarterback job heading into the Sun Devils' 2019 season. He was the first true freshman to be a starting quarterback in the program's history.

Daniels' time in Tempe featured some highs -- a freshman campaign that featured 2,943 yards and 17 touchdowns -- as well as some lows, including a 10-interception season in 2021. Before that season, the NCAA announced Arizona State was under investigation for several potential recruiting violations.

Following the 2021 season at ASU, Daniels announced he would be transferring to LSU, which had just hired Brian Kelly as its head coach. During his first season as a Tiger, Daniels led LSU to nine wins and the SEC Championship Game while throwing for 2,774 yards and running for 818 more.

LSU will be playing in the ReliaQuest Bow on Jan. 1st

Florida’s attorney general is launching an antitrust investigation into the decision to leave Florida State University out of the upcoming College Football Playoff, marking an escalation of the still-raging controversy over FSU’s snubbing.

Attorney General Ashley Moody sent on Tuesday a civil investigative demand letter to the College Football Playoff, the organization that administers the playoffs and ultimately determined that FSU couldn’t compete in it despite an undefeated regular season. Moody’s office wants a long list of documents and information, including all communications with the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Southeastern Conference and sports media outlet ESPN.

“I’m a lifelong Gator, but I’m also the Florida attorney general, and I know injustice when I see it,” Moody said in a statement shared first with POLITICO. Moody is a graduate of FSU’s arch-rival the University of Florida. “No rational person or college football fan can look at this situation and not question the result. The NCAA, conferences, and the College Football Playoff Committee are subject to antitrust laws.”

Moody, who is the state’s top legal official, has the authority to launch antitrust investigations and the power to take legal action against companies, organizations and individuals alleged to have committed state or federal antitrust actions. She said the investigation would examine if the selection committee was involved in “any anticompetitive conduct.”

“As it stands, the committee’s decision reeks of partiality, so we are demanding answers — not only for FSU, but for all schools, teams and fans of college football,” Moody said. “In Florida, merit matters. If it’s attention they were looking for, the committee certainly has our attention now.”

The letter sent to the committee says the investigation will look at “possible contracts, combinations or conspiracies in restraint of trade, or monopolization, attempted monopolization or commerce, relating to anticompetitive effects of the College Football playoffs on the Group of Five Conferences and Power Five Conferences.” There are 10 primary conferences at the top level of college football, including conferences such as the ACC and SEC that are part of the “Power 5.”

“We will carefully review this demand for information, but it sure seems to be an overly aggressive reaction to a college football ranking in which some fans somewhere were bound to be disappointed,” said Bill Hancock, executive director of the College Football Playoff.

has made its position clear on the College Football Playoffs. We respect Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, and we look forward to the outcome of her inquiry.”

Dennis Schnittker, assistant vice president for university communications at FSU, said “we look forward to the outcome of [Moody’s] inquiry.”

FSU went 13-0 this past season, including winning the ACC championship game. But the Seminoles became the first undefeated team from a “Power 5” conference to be denied a chance to play in the four-team playoff. The selection committee earlier this month announced that it had chosen two one-loss teams — Texas and Alabama — ahead of the Seminoles.

The decision enraged the FSU fan base because the head of the selection committee said that the decision was based in part on the injury of FSU’s star quarterback. Many Florida politicians — including Gov. Ron DeSantis and GOP Sen. Rick Scott — have come to FSU’s defense. Some have questioned if there was pressure to include Alabama from the SEC since the conference recently inked a $3 billion television contract with ESPN, the cable network that broadcasts the playoff games.

DeSantis, while acknowledging that there’s little that could be done ahead of the two playoff games scheduled for New Year’s Day, recommended $1 million in his proposed budget in case of potential litigation. Scott sent his own letter on U.S. Senate letterhead asking that the selection committee turn over information. Scott said in a social media post on Monday that he had not gotten a response.

“If they truly feel they made the best decision, why can’t they be transparent? What are they afraid of?” Scott said.

Politicians from other states, such as Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), have pushed back against the complaints of Florida officials, as have many top television celebrities on ESPN. Tuberville, a former college football coach who guided Auburn to an undefeated season, told The Hill it was a “waste of time” to demand that the selection committee turn over records.

FSU’s season included wins over two SEC teams, Louisiana State and University of Florida, as well as wins over ACC rivals Clemson and Miami. The team’s quarterback, Jordan Travis, suffered a season-ending leg injury in mid-November. FSU still defeated the Florida Gators a week later with a backup quarterback and earned the number four spot in the penultimate playoff rankings. The team, however, was forced to turn to its third-string quarterback in the championship game against Louisville.

After the win, however, the selection committee dropped FSU after Alabama defeated reigning national champion Georgia in the SEC championship. Alabama had lost earlier in the season to Texas, which the committee put in at the third spot.

Moody has demanded that the selection committee turn over all documents no later than Jan. 11 but as soon as Dec. 26. The lengthy request not only asks for communications exchanged between the committee and the NCAA, ESPN and conferences, but also documents such as vote sheets and details on financial guarantees. Florida’s attorney general is also seeking any recordings or audio of meetings and information on compensation paid to committee members.

Vice President Kamala Harris will attend the Cricket Celebration Bowl in Atlanta on Saturday to support her alma mater Howard University as it plays Florida A&M University for the championship, her press secretary told Andscape exclusively.

Harris will watch the game from a suite at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game will kick off at noon and air live on ABC.

During the game, Harris will sit for an interview with ESPN’s Tiffany Greene and Jay “Sky” Walker. Other details of her schedule before and after the game are still being finalized.

“We are delighted Vice President Harris will take time out of her busy schedule to support her alma mater. It means a great deal to our administration, coaches and most of all our student-athletes,” said Howard athletic director Kery Davis.

“The Celebration Bowl is a celebration of HBCU excellence, and there is no better example of that excellence than VP Harris.”

Howard won the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference title in November to earn the university’s first Celebration Bowl berth. The MEAC is 6-1 in Celebration Bowl play since the inaugural game in 2015.

Harris, who graduated from Howard in 1986, is the first woman and first graduate of a historically Black college or university to be elected as vice president.

“Having Kamala Harris, vice president of the United States and an HBCU alumna, attend the Celebration Bowl allows our student-athletes to see that no dream is out of their reach and no goal is unattainable,” said Tiffani-Dawn Sykes, Florida A&M’s vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics. “It is without a doubt an honor and a privilege to have her in attendance to celebrate with the SWAC and MEAC champions at the Cricket Celebration Bowl.”

    You figure it out yet?

On Saturday, the 2023 Bowl series will kick off and it will be The Cricket Celebration Bowl front and center. The Bowl features the best from the Southwestern Athletics Conference (SWAC) and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) squaring off to determine who is the king of HBCUs.

This year’s game which will be played at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia features the Rattlers of Florida A&M University (FAMU) and the Bison of Howard University. The game will kick off at noon and will be carried live for a national TV audience on ABC.

The game started in 2015 and has shown tremendous growth since. Early reports are that ticket sales are up and it could surpass last year’s attendance numbers. The reported payout is $1 million for each conference to be split on a percentage basis between the conference office and the member institutions. Last year’s game was reported to have 2.4 million viewers.

I should have known you'd reply with useless c&p that doesn't answer my question.

It's dumb enough that you call a game where feet barely ever strike the ball football. Now you have (probably) a 'football' game called a 'Cricket Bowl'.

    Sheesh...

And by the way (reference to your 2nd edit),……it does make a difference if the VP shows up. Think, ticket sales.

Syracuse musta let the fans in the stands play the game instead of the student athletes.
