Kipchoge, running legend arrives to join the Bangkok Marathon 2024

Marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya arrived in Bangkok on Wednesday, to participate in the Bangkok Marathon on Sunday, part of a collaboration to position Thailand as Asia’s premier destination for runners worldwide.

Kipchoge, visiting Thailand in his role as an ambassador, will attend the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok, where he will join the 10km mass run alongside 33,712 runners from 77 countries.

The event is expected to generate more than Bt900 million in revenue.

On Sunday, Kipchoge and his wife will also be granted an audience with Their Majesties the King and Queen to present running jerseys and report on the event.

The two-time gold medallist won at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. In 2019, he ran a marathon in Vienna, achieving a time of 1:59:40.2, becoming the first person in recorded history to complete a sub-two-hour marathon.

The Bangkok Marathon will be divided into distance categories:

    · 42.195km and 21.1km races (both starting at 2pm from MBK Centre)
    · 10km race (starting at 5.45pm at Sanam Luang)
    · 4.5km race (starting at 6.30am at Sanam Luang)

According to NN Running Team’s online statement, Kipchoge expressed his belief in the tremendous potential of the Asian running community and his enthusiasm for collaborating with Thailand to promote the sport in the region.

“I have always said that I want to make this world a running world, because a running world is a happy world, a running world is a healthy world and a running world is a peaceful world. This partnership contributes to my personal ambitions,” Kipchoge said.

Man saves a life while running the Chicago Marathon

A man jumped into action when a woman collapsed and stopped breathing with no sign of a pulse while running the Chicago Marathon.

Brian Beres usually spends his days at ProHealth Waukesha Memorial Hospital-Mukwonago as a nurse and he did not hesitate when he saw an emergency during the Chicago Marathon.

Beres has been a marathon runner for more than a decade and runs the Chicago Marathon nearly every year to raise money for the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago in honor of his son, Kieran.

Kieran had life-saving surgery at just 5 days old.

Along with raising money, Beres’s other mission this year was to run the 26.2 miles in a time that would qualify him for the Boston Marathon.

He was on pace to do just that this year.

“I was kind of in a rhythm with how I was running and everything felt good,” he said.

Beres was nearly at the end of the race just after mile 21 when something happened in front of him.

“There was a woman running, not 10 yards in front of me, collapsed. I immediately ran to her,” he said.

Beres says his instincts as an emergency room nurse kicked in.

“She didn’t have pulses and she wasn’t breathing,” Beres said. “I started CPR immediately with her with this bystander.”

Beres performed CPR on the woman for 45 minutes before the fire department could get her off the course and to the hospital.

Wednesday night, he was invited to meet the runner he helped save, Maria Sutton.

Sutton suffered a heart attack while running.

‘This was God’s way that this is the race you are going to run. This is what is going to happen, fate intervened with me being there. I was meant to be there for her," Beres said.

He plans to run the Chicago Marathon again next year and still hopes to one day qualify for the Boston Marathon.

Nine-year-old boy dies after being struck by vehicle during Taiwanese marathon

A nine-year-old boy accompanying his father in a marathon in Changhua County, Taiwan, tragically died on 24th November after being struck by a vehicle. The boy, who had not registered for the event, was running alongside his father during the “2024 Polio RUN” when the accident occurred.

Reports indicate that as the pair passed along Rulin Road, the boy was hit by a car, resulting in him falling to the ground and subsequently being run over by the vehicle’s wheels. Emergency responders attempted to revive him at the scene before transporting him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The event’s organisers stated that the marathon route had been closed to traffic, with personnel deployed for traffic control and warnings. However, the 50-year-old driver involved in the incident claimed he did not notice any traffic management measures. He stated that he was focused on the large number of runners and did not see the child until he felt the vehicle make contact. The driver insisted he was travelling at a speed of only 20 km/h, arguing that the crowded conditions made it difficult to drive any faster.

Just 14,000 races sign up for Angkor Wat International Half Marathon

A total of 14,000 runners have registered for the 29th Angkor Wat International Half Marathon, which will be held in front of the Angkor Wat temple on December 1.

In a statement posted on the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) website on Friday, Vath Chamroeun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sport and Secretary General of the NOCC, said that the number of local and international runners in this yearÂ’s Angkor Wat International Half Marathon has significantly increased. Chamroeun reported that this yearÂ’s event had attracted the most participants since its inception. According to Chamroeun, the previous record for the most participants was set in 2019, when 12,000 runners registered.

This year’s event drew an unprecedented number of participants, likely due to the presence of Prime Minister Hun Manet at the event and the Cambodian government’s efforts to promote Siem Reap as a key destination,” said Chamroeun.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet will participate in a 5km race at the 29th Angkor Wat International Half Marathon, as announced by the NOCC in a news conference in September 2024.

“It is an honour for us that our Prime Minister will be participating in the running event. The Angkor Wat International Half Marathon is one of the largest sporting events in Cambodia, and the people in the province have greatly benefited from it,” Chamroeun said during the press conference.

“The organising committee will do its utmost to ensure the safety of all participants and maintain the event’s excellent reputation,” he added.

This year, the event will feature its four main race categories: the 21 km half marathon, the 10 km, the 5 km, and the 3 km. The races will start in front of the Angkor Wat temple, with an early dawn start scheduled for 5:15 am and will conclude by 10:30 am.

The Angkor Wat International Half Marathon is held to raise funds for charity, with all registration fees dedicated to providing prosthetic limbs, social reintegration programs, and support for constructive social activities such as education and rehabilitative medicine.

Funds raised by the marathon will also help landmine victims. The event will also support underprivileged children in need of urgent care at hospitals, including Angkor ChildrenÂ’s Hospital and Kantha Bopha ChildrenÂ’s Hospital.

Last year, the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon drew 10,154 participants, including 6,500 Cambodians and 3,654 international runners from 78 countries, marking a 40% increase compared to the 2022 event. Runners from the United Kingdom, United States, and France represented the largest groups of foreign participants.

China half marathon offers cow, wild fish and chickens as prizes

A half marathon in China's northeast province of Jilin announced an unusual selection of prizes, with first over the line winning a cow and other runners getting wild fish, geese or roosters, in a bid to attract more participants and promote local produce.

The organisers of the Nong'an Taipingchi Ice and Snow half marathon on Dec. 29 said in a WeChat post that male and female champions of the half marathon would be awarded a cow. The farm animal could also be exchanged for 6,000 yuan ($827.81).

Second place gets wild fish from Taiping pond, while other prizes were geese, ducks and roosters from the same pond. Ten kilograms (22 pounds) of rice and wheat would be given out to other finishers.

"Grand prizes are coming and the champions are so proud. The organising committee is full of sincerity," the post said.

The notice was widely circulated on Chinese social media and ranked as one of the hottest topics on platform Weibo on Tuesday.

Traffic cone man eyes London Marathon world record

An avid runner will attempt to break the record for the fastest person to run the London Marathon dressed as a traffic cone.

Michael Wiggins, from Streatham, south-west London, will run his 18th London Marathon since 1999 - and his first in a traffic cone costume as he attempts to break the Guinness World Record (GWR).

Mr Wiggins wants to beat the previous record of three hours and 22 minutes, all while raising money for Prostate Cancer UK.

He said he was shocked after three of his friends were diagnosed with prostate cancer and hopes his record attempt will encourage more men to talk about their health concerns.

"I've got three good friends that I've known for years, all in their early 60s now, who had prostate cancer in the last five years," the 47-year-old said.

"Although they are 10 or 12 years older than me, it's still a shock."

He is aiming to raise more than Ł1,000 for Prostate Cancer UK, a charity funding research into the disease which affects one in eight men.

"If it saves one extra life, that's worth doing," he said.

North Korea holds first Pyongyang International Marathon in six years

North Korea has held the Pyongyang International Marathon for the first time in six years, welcoming some 200 foreign runners to the streets of the reclusive country's capital.

The marathon, which was launched in 1981, took place annually in April to celebrate the birth of its founding leader Kim Il Sung.

Before Sunday's marathon, the race was last held in 2019, wherein 950 foreigners participated. North Korea sealed itself off the following year, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

North Korea has been slow to reopen since, allowing only Russian tourists into its capital since last year.

Runners have had to enter the country as part of an organised tour group, as was the case before the pandemic.

Koryo Tours, a Beijing-based travel agency listed as an "exclusive partner" on the event website, offers six-day marathon tours at 2,195 euros ($2,406) including flights to and from Beijing.

"The Pyongyang Marathon is an extremely unique experience as it provides an opportunity to interact with locals," the agency wrote on its website.

Sunday's marathon route took participants past landmarks across the city, including the Kim Il Sung stadium, the Arch of Triumph built to commemorate Kim Il Sung's role in resisting Japanese rule, and the Mirae Future Scientists' Street said to be a residential district for scientists and engineers.

Pictures online show the stadium - where runners start and finish their race - filled with spectators, many of them cheering and waving gold-coloured paper flags.

Pak Kum Dong, a North Korean runner, told Reuters news agency: "The eyes of our people on me helped me to bear the difficulties whenever I feel tired."

There is no publicly available information on race results.

North Korea had only statred to scale back Covid-19 restrictions in the middle of 2023.

In Feburary, it allowed some Western tourists into the remote, eastern city Rason, but suspended those tours just weeks after.

Hungover Swansea bride finishes marathon third during her hen do

Despite nursing a hen do hangover, a bride-to-be stormed into an impressive third place finish at the Brighton Marathon. Emily Marchant, a lecturer and researcher at Swansea University, completed the 26.2 mile race in under three hours, unhindered by her late night celebrations.

Emily's unusual pre-race preparation involved partying until 3am, grabbing comfortably less than six hours kip, then lacing up her running shoes for the 9am race start on Sunday, April 6. Marchant was spurred on by her friends, who were not only there to cheer but also provided some light-hearted fancy dress accessories as she ran. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here

She laughed: "I got a text at halfway from my supporters saying I was making my way up the field so I just thought, 'Go for it'. I chased a few girls down and I'm just so happy to be on the podium."

The festivities had kicked off on Saturday with fun and games and a few drinks on a scenic balcony, followed by a night out, leaving her feeling "questionable" on race day. Reflecting on her less than ideal pre-race preparation, she said: "I was going to be sensible but I got excited and had fun, got in late and here we are."

Determined to make her hen weekend unforgettable, Marchant added: "It's my hen weekend and I wanted to do something iconic and memorable. I wasn't expecting a podium finish so it has just made the weekend even more special. And we are staying tonight so (we) are probably going to celebrate this evening."

What the long-range weather forecast says about the Boston Marathon

Weather conditions in April around New England brings plenty of uncertainity to many, including those running in the annual Boston Marathon.

The oldest marathon race in the world — the 129th running — is set to take place on Patriots' Day, April 21. The 26.2-mile course begins a little after 9 a.m. in Hopkinton and ends at Boylston Street. The first marathon took place in 1897 when the course was just held 24.5 miles. John J. McDermott captured the first men's title out of 15 participants.

Throughout its history, runners have endured inclement weather from snow flakes, winds, downpours to extreme heat. So what will the runners encounter this time around?

According to The Weather Channel's long range forecast for Marathon Monday, temperature will range in the upper 50s under mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of raindrops.

That fits in with the recent history of the race. During the last four years, the temperature in the annual event ranged between 54 degrees to 69 degrees.

Los Bandidos power through Almeria half marathon

The Almería Half Marathon is famous for its lovely seaside views and great atmosphere.

But this year, things got harder as the temperature climbed throughout the morning. The last 7 km of the half marathon were uphill, which made it even tougher for the runners. Thankfully, support from other club members and local fans gave everyone an extra push to keep going right to the finish.

    Cheering all the way

Los Bandidos runners had lots of support out on the course. Six lively fan zones were set up to cheer them on, filled with friends, family, and supporters. With cheers, banners, and plenty of noise, they helped keep energy levels high and encouraged runners when they needed it most.

    Personal bests and proud moments

Finishing the race was an achievement in itself, but some Bandidos went even further by landing top spots in their categories. Jackie Darcy and Derek Wright both grabbed third place in their age groups for the half marathon, and Shirley Ball came first in her age group in the 10K. These great results are a credit to their hard work and training.

    More than just a race

After crossing the finish line, runners were treated to a proper celebration. There was beer, paella, a souvenir t-shirt, an IKEA voucher, and even a pack of tomatoes to take home. The atmosphere was full of pride and fun as runners shared stories and celebrated their efforts.

    Growing stronger every year

Since starting as a small 5K group in 2018, Los Bandidos has grown into a lively community of people who love sport. Now they also take part in road cycling, sea swimming, and triathlons. Open to all ages and nationalities, the group welcomes everyone, whether they’re experienced athletes or just starting out. They also take pride in helping the local community and staying active together. You can follow their latest events and news on their Facebook page: Los Bandidos Facebook.

Record 56,950 runners at Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris 2025

A record-breaking 56,950 runners took part in the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris on Sunday, April 13, 2025 – spotlighting the event as hosting one of the largest marathon fields in the world this year.

Organised by Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), the Paris Marathon course took participants past some of the French capital’s most recognisable landmarks – from the Champs-Élysées to the Eiffel Tower – with thousands of supporters lining the route. Over half the field (51%) were first-time marathoners.

Women made up 31% of entrants, a new high for the event, while runners under 25 accounted for more than 10% of the field.

Charity runners also made their mark, with nearly 6,000 participants raising close to €5 million for causes including Gustave Roussy, Ligue Contre le Cancer and Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque.

International runners represented 33% of the field, with entrants travelling from countries including Australia, Canada and the UK.

2025 Boston Marathon: Hellen ObiriÂ’s hunt for a historic three-peat

On Monday, 21 April, Obiri aims to become the first Kenyan to win three consecutive Boston Marathon races. But with a rapid field lined up to compete in the race, it will be far from easy for the two-time world championship gold medallist.

t has been 26 years since EthiopiaÂ’s Fatuma Roba recorded her third successive Boston Marathon victory. Now, almost three decades later, Hellen Obiri is chasing history as she aims to become the first Kenyan woman to achieve a three-peat in the capital of Massachusetts.

But the task wonÂ’t be easy for the three-time Olympic athletics medallist, who made her marathon debut at the 2022 New York City Marathon after a hugely successful career on the track.

Perhaps surprisingly for a two-time Boston winner, Obiri doesnÂ’t hold the fastest marathon time in the womenÂ’s field. In fact, sheÂ’s not even in the top 10.

So what makes Obiri such a formidable contender at the Boston Marathon, and why is she a favourite for victory on Monday, 21 April?

Read on Olympics.com to find out.

Why a unicorn is the symbol of the Boston Marathon

The unicorn, with its horn pointed upward and majestic mane, has graced the Boston Marathon finish line for decades.

The mythical creature, which started as the symbol for the Boston Athletic Association, has become synonymous with the historic race, gracing runnersÂ’ jackets, medals, and trophies.

“It’s probably one of our most frequently asked questions,” Jack Fleming, the BAA’s president and CEO, said of the unicorn’s origin with the athletic association, which organizes the marathon. “People pause on it, they think about it.”

He said the common belief is that the unicorn was on the family crest of one of the BAAÂ’s founding members.

“That hasn’t been proven,” Fleming said. “But with the rich heritage up here — between the Scots and the English and the Irish — it’s a pretty good likelihood.”

The athletic club was founded in 1887 (the first Boston Marathon took place in 1897), and the unicorn was associated with all the organizationÂ’s sports.

Even if it once belonged to a family that had a coat of arms, the unicornÂ’s meaning and significance has since broadened.

“The unicorn is a mythological figure that is meant to be pursued, but in that pursuit, you never catch [it],” Fleming said. “So it inspires you to continue to try — to race harder in the case of running — and though it may be elusive, it really is the pursuit of the unicorn that makes you better and better and better.”

Humanoid robots stride into the future with world's first half-marathon

Step by mechanical step, dozens of humanoid robots took to the streets of Beijing early Saturday, joining thousands of their flesh-and-blood counterparts in a world-first half marathon showcasing China's drive to lead the global race in cutting-edge technology.

The 21-kilometre (13-mile) event held in the Chinese capital's E-Town — a state-backed hub for high-tech manufacturing — is billed as a groundbreaking effort to test the limits of bipedal robots in real-world conditions.

At the crack of the starter's gun, and as a Chinese pop song "I Believe" blared out from loudspeakers on repeat, the robots queued up one by one and took their first tentative steps.

Curious human runners lined up on their side of the road and waited patiently with mobile phones at the ready to shoot each machine as they prepared to depart.

One smaller-sized android, which fell over and lay on the ground for several minutes, got up by itself to loud cheers.

Another, powered by propellers and designed to look like a Transformer, veered across the starting line before crashing into a barrier and knocking over an engineer.

"Getting onto the race track might seem like a small step for humans, but it's a giant leap for humanoid robots," Liang Liang, Beijing E-Town's management committee deputy director, told AFP before the event. Nearby, engineers jogged alongside their machines.

"The marathon helps push humanoid robots one step closer toward industrialisation."

Crowds fill the streets of Boston ahead of the Boston Marathon

The streets of Boston were packed with runners and spectators on Saturday, taking in the sights and sounds of the city ahead of Monday's race.

"The crowd, the feeling, I already have chills walking around today, I'm so excited," said Sarah Formin, who is running the Boston Marathon for the first time. "You just feel in the air — everyone is so excited."

"It's unbelievable to be here it's just an honor and a privilege to be here," said Paul Carter, who is visiting from New Hampshire "The excitement, the people — it's just very passionate."

Even the littlest ones, and four-legged friends, got a glimpse of the iconic finish line.

At the marathon expo, cheers for runners picking up their bibs.

"My dream is to run 100 marathons across 100 cities around the world," Rakesh Bhandaria said, who is from India and competing in the Boston Marathon. "This is my 36th marathon."

Bill Rodgers' sneakers cast in gold were also on display and Meb Keflezighi's jersey from his winning race in 2014.

"It's a surreal experience, I remember being in 7th grade watching it happen and saying I want to do it one day, so we're here," Maddy Garrison said, who is from Ohio and running in the Boston Marathon.

Some traveled across the world to finish the big six, the world's most prestigious marathons.

"I've done New York, I've done Chicago for two years last year, I did Tokyo, and this year Boston," Raymond Damerow said, who is from Germany.

"This is my sixth, the final one. I've done the five majors," Boissie Mbha said, who is from South Africa.

Kenyan Runner John Korir Wins Boston Marathon Despite Early Fall

Results from the 2025 Boston Marathon elite divisions are in. The iconic race saw some mishaps that could have had poor outcomes, including a fall taken by Kenyan runner John Korir early on. While tripping isn't how anyone wants to start such a monumental race, Korir took it in stride and continued in the competition.

The 28-year-old runner handled the situation so well that he crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 2 : 04 : 45. According to Scott Douglas of Runner's World, this marked the fastest finishing time since 2011 when Geoffrey Mutai, a fellow Kenyan athlete, landed a time of 2 : 03 : 02.

Assefa wins London Marathon women's race after late breaka

Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia secured her first London Marathon title Sunday after pulling away from Joyciline Jepkosgei near the end.

Assefa finished in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 15 minutes and 50 seconds, the fastest ever in a women's-only marathon — but 25 seconds slower than the course record set by Paula Radcliffe in 2003 when it was a mixed race.

Assefa finished second both in London and at the Paris Olympics last year but adds this title to two Berlin Marathon wins. Unlike in Paris, she made sure there would be no sprint finish this time as she left Jepkosgei behind with a few kilometers left and ran alone along the Thames and through central London to the finish in front of Buckingham Palace.

Jepkosgei, the 2021 London winner, was almost three minutes back. Olympic champion Sifan Hassan was third.

Eugene Marathon features first-time winners in 2025 edition

    Marathons are emotional.

The finish line is always stocked with elation, disbelief and exhaustion — and it was no different in Eugene on April 27.

The sold-out 2025 Eugene Half and Full Marathon took runners around the city on a dry Sunday morning. The winners, for many of whom the day was their first-ever win, took victories on the track at Hayward Field with pride in front of a packed grandstand. Their emotions — optimism, joy, excitement and satisfaction — were on full display at the line.

Men’s half marathon winner Jackson Mestler was the first runner to enter Hayward Field on Sunday morning — the Eugene native finished his first-ever half marathon in 1 : 05 : 04.

“I knew it was going to be a patient game for me, at least, to get to eight to 10 miles,” Mestler said. “And then I’d know at that point if this was a big mistake or where I am fitness-wise. It was the latter.”

Mestler led early and often after the field’s early-morning departure on Agate Street, but it wasn’t the victory that he said he was focused on from the gun.

“I just wanted to be cautiously optimistic — to go out there and find a rhythm,” Mestler said. “I just wanted to be rhythmic and efficient. I had a good group of guys out there, so it was really nice.”

On the women’s side, high school track coach Hannah Calvert won her half marathon in 1 : 16 : 44 — and, in her first finish at Hayward Field, she let her imagination run, too.

“It was so cool,” Calvert said of the finish line. “I was like, ‘This’ll be my only win at Hayward Field. I’ll pretend it’s a Diamond League meet.’”

Calvert, an experienced distance runner, said she secretly loves half marathons.

“I think the half is the magical distance,” Calvert said. “You can recover from it super easily, you can run more of them than a marathon, and for me it’s that you can pretty much feel good the whole way.”

The men’s full winner, Bradley Hodkinson, took the tape in his first Eugene Marathon. Hodkinson, who finished in 2 : 19 : 44, eased ahead of a group with around 10 miles to go and secured the win.

“It was very special,” Hodkinson said of his finish. “This is my first time being at the new Hayward Field, and they did an awesome job. It was super exciting — all the fans were awesome and had lots of hype.”
