Commonwealth Games: 2026 event in doubt after Victoria cancels

The 2026 Commonwealth Games are in doubt after the Australian state of Victoria cancelled its plans to host due to budget blowouts.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) struggled to find a host before Victoria volunteered in April 2022.

But the premier said the projected cost had now tripled and become "well and truly too much" for the state to bear.

The CGF called the decision "hugely disappointing" and said it is "committed to finding a solution".

The solution is to reduce the number of events, and therefore the number of specialist event centres and stadia.

Give the minor nations a veto to protect their only specialisation, like climbing trees and similar minor sports
For me personally, it should just be athletics, swimming and amateur level team games.

Major pro sporting calendars are too crowded already.

The other solution is not to award it to people who can't plan properly, fail to make appropriate contingencies, and subsequently fail to meet their commitments.

Or restrict it to tree climbing and other minor sport not usually contested on a national level.

Its not the first time the games have been threatened due to costs, so saving money is key to finding hosts.

Well, it's quite good for signing trade deals with to pretend there are advantages to BREXIT.

In fairness I can't remember the last time I watched it, and it certainly wasn't this century.

The games have run their course, time to give it the flick or tone it right down, drop a lot of
events and make cheap to host.
Dictator Dan wanted to blow 7 bill, what a nong, his state has the highest debt in the country.
Wanted to have it in country cities with little infrastructure and lack of accomondation for visitors.
Hope it is the long overdue downfall of the CCP loving prick.

Commonwealth Games: Gold Coast pulls out of hosting event
    AAP
    4 Dec 2023

The Gold Coast has scrapped its bid to host the 2026/27 Commonwealth Games after it failed to generate support from the state or federal governments.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate confirmed the city would no longer pursue its AU$700 million bid to host a “streamlined” 2026 Games, announced after the Victorian government pulled out in July citing cost blowouts.

”We did our best and that’s all people can expect,” Tate said in a statement on Sunday night.

”Sadly, at the same time, our country’s reputation as a place that reneges on a global sports contract remains in tatters.”
