Aleksandra Miroslaw and Bassa Mawem have secured quota spots to next summer's Paris 2024 Olympic Games following respective wins at the IFSC Speed European Qualifier Rome 2023, the first of five Continental Qualifiers for speed climbing.

Although the athletes obtained a nominative quota, National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.

The action at the Foro Italico streamed live on Olympics.com on Friday (15 September 2023).

Both Miroslaw and Mawem made their Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020 in 2021, when sport climibing was included in the Olympic programme for the first time. Speed climbing has split off for Paris and will award its own set of medals.

The two-time world champion Miroslaw, the world record holder at 6.25 seconds, clocked a 6.36 to edge Polish teammate Aleksandra Kalucka, who had climbed neck and neck with Miroslaw but stumbled at the finish for a 7.41.

Kenya earned their place at the Paris 2024 Olympics by winning the Rugby Africa Men's Sevens 2023 at the Zimbabwean capital of Harare.

A 17-12 win over pre-tournament favourites South Africa enabled Kenya to become the ninth men's team to confirm its participation in next year's Games.

They will now join France, New Zealand, Argentina, Fiji, Australia, Uruguay, Ireland and the United States as confirmed Olympic attendees.

The final three places will be decided via the Oceania and Asia qualification tournaments and the Olympic repechage tournament.

Kenya’s coach Kevin Wambua told World Rugby he was always confident his team could make it to a third Olympic Games after participating at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 editions.

Day one victories over Zambia, Namibia, and Nigeria enabled Kenya to top Pool B and reach the quarter-finals, where they beat Burkina Faso 26-0.

A 35-10 semi-final win over the hosts sent them through to meet a South African team that had shown ominous form by scoring 120 points and only conceding 14 en route to the final.

Helped by four tries from former Springbok winger Rosko Specman on his return to the international arena, South Africa defeated their opening opponents Ivory Coast and soon added further victories over Tunisia and Madagascar.

The Blitzboks easily accounted for Nigeria in the quarter-finals, winning 27-0, but they were made to work by Uganda for their place in the final before sealing a 26-14 win.

Kenya took an early lead in the final through Patrick Odongo but trailed 12-7 at the break after conceding tries from Selvyn Davids and Christie Grobbelaar.

Odongo scored again in the second half to level the scores before John Okoth scored the try that sent Kenya to the Olympics.

It was a huge fillip for them following the disappointment of missing out on SVNS qualification after being beaten by Canada in the final of the World Rugby Sevens Series 2024 play-off at Twickenham in May.

For South Africa and Uganda, who finished third after a 24-12 win over Zimbabwe in the bronze medal match, the dream of competing at the Olympics is not over as both have qualified for the Olympic repechage tournament.

I had hoped someone would answer you before I posted here again, because I have no idea. I don’t think David’s “I rest my case” was helpful.

Irish Olympic canoeist Robert Hendrick has accomplished an impressive feat by qualifying his country for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Canoe Slalom, a moment of immense pride for the Irish paddlesports community.

He demonstrated skill and composure in the semi-final round of the World Championships, securing 16th place and booking a spot for Ireland on the C1 Men start line for next year's Games.

During the semi-finals, Liam Jegou, a Tokyo Olympian, participated in the canoe slalom race. Despite commendable skill, he fell to the narrow margins in canoe slalom and lost valuable time towards the end, finishing 30th.

In the meantime, the Irish K1 Men are still in the running for Olympic qualification, with Noel Hendrick set to participate in Saturday's semi-final. If he finishes in the top 15, it will secure a quota spot for the Paris Games, keeping Ireland's hopes alive for the event.

Dominican Republic earned the right to compete at the Olympic Games next year after emerging with a crucial five-set victory over the Netherlands on Sunday to finish the FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifier in Ningbo on top of the final Pool A standings and join Serbia on the way to Paris 2024.

It will be the fourth time the Caribbean island nation qualify for the Olympic Games, after participating in Athens 2004, in London 2012, where they reached the quarterfinals, and in Tokyo 2020.

In Sunday’s do-or-die duel, the Dutch managed to come back from a set down twice during the game before the Dominicans could celebrate a 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-12) victory, which propelled them to the top of the table on a 6-1 win-loss record and 17 points. The Dutch could have been among the top two, but had to settle for the fifth place on 4-3 and 13.

Each of the first four sets itself was a small rollercoaster, in which the two teams battled hard, taking turns in the lead, to eventually push the match to a deciding fifth set. In the tie-breaker, Dominican Republic stepped in front with the very first rally and never let go of their lead again until Nika Daalderop’s serving error for the last point of the match.

The Netherlands outplayed the Dominicans in all scoring elements: 65-63 in attack kills, 8-7 in kill blocks and 6-5 in serving aces, but also made 50% more unforced errors than the opponents (33 against 22), which cost them the match. Dominican outside hitter Brayelin Martinez and her Dutch counterpart Nika Daalderop engaged in a scoring race, which ended tied at 23 points each. While all of Martinez’s points came in offence at a 51% success rate, Daalderop registered three kill blocks and two aces towards her tally. Six more players reached the double digits during the game: Yonkaira Pena with 17 points, Gaila Gonzalez with 16, and Jineiry Martinez with 10 on the winners’ side, and Celeste Plak with 18 points, Indy Baijens with 15, and Marrit Jasper with 14 for the European team.

Inside the Billion-Dollar Effort to Clean Up the Seine

Feature: Paris must now ‘walk the talk’ on clean air

On paper, Paris’ clean air strategy is world-leading, but campaigners are increasingly concerned that frequent delays will leave an air pollution picture in the city that is a far cry from what was promised, discovers Chloe Coules.
No one can deny that the City of Paris is ambitious on air quality. From banning all diesel vehicles to creating school streets in front of the 300 most polluted schools in the city, the plans outlined by the Ville de Paris would make the city a global leader on tackling air pollution.
However, in practise plans to curb air pollution levels in the city have been met by many obstacles.
According to Airparif, a network that monitors the quality of the air in the city, road transport is one of the leading causes of air pollution in Paris, representing more than half of nitrogen oxide emissions in 2017 and nearly 20% of PM10 and PM2.5 emissions.
To combat this, the Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo introduced a range of measures to improve air quality in the city, including banning all diesel vehicles, introducing a low traffic zone (LTZ), creating school streets in front of 300 of the most polluted schools, building 180km of extra cycle lanes in the city, enforcing parking fees for motorbikes and mopeds, and scrapping half of the city’s surface car parking spaces by 2026.

The U.S. Women’s National Team qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Sunday when it defeated Germany 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-9, 25-16) at the FIVB Road to Paris Olympic Qualifier in Łódź, Poland.

The U.S. Women finished the tournament with a 6-1 record. They qualified for their 11th straight Olympic Games and 13th overall. The U.S. Women finished first in the group and also improved their world ranking to No. 2.

The U.S. Women dominated Germany on the attack (69-41) led by opposite Annie Drews who entered the match as a substitute to start the second set and led all scorers with 27 points on a match-high 27 kills (.544 hitting efficiency).

“My focus coming into tonight was to just be where my feet were and fill in the gaps as needed,” Drews said. “We sometimes talk about how we want to feel after the match is over. Can we truly say we have nothing left in the tank or finished with no regrets? So that was in the back of my mind tonight; playing in a way where I wouldn’t regret anything.”

Outside hitter Jordan Larson added 17 points on 11 kills, a team-high three aces and three blocks. She also led the team in successful receptions with five and had 16 digs.

“Really proud of our team for how we responded after a difficult loss (to Poland) yesterday,” said Larson, a three-time Olympic medalist. “Props to Germany for coming out strong in set one, but really proud of our team, which stayed steady and secured out ticket to Paris.”

Germany led in blocks (10-8). The teams tied in aces (6-6) and Germany had one more scoring error (16-15).

U.S. outside hitter Kelsey (Robinson) Cook totaled 13 points on 12 kills and one ace. Middle blocker Chiaka Ogbogu scored 10 points on five kills, a team-high four blocks and one ace.

Middle Dana Rettke added nine points on seven kills, one block and one ace.

Opposite Jordan Thompson played the first set and scored five points on five kills.

Great Britain celebrates double gold as Clarke and Woods triumph in kayak cross on final day of home 2023 Canoe Slalom World Championships

Joseph Clarke and Kimberley Woods doubled up on their golden haul in the kayak cross event, which will make its Olympic debut at Paris 2024.

Great Britain's Joseph Clarke capped off a spectacular 2023 Canoe Slalom World Championships with a second gold medal, in kayak cross, on Sunday (24 September) to follow on his earlier success in the men’s K1.

His compatriot Kimberley Woods also leaves the championships with two gold medals. In addition to the gold in the kayak cross, the British canoeist won a medal in the women's C1 team event as well as a silver in the individual C1.

Both Woods and Clarke were in top form on the home waters of the Lee Valley White Water Center, passing through all their rounds without receiving a single fault. These performances allowed Clarke to defend his 2022 world title, while Woods upgraded from last year's silver.

The reigning Olympic champions will have the opportunity to defend their title after securing their spot at next summer’s Olympic Games

Team Canada secured the final CONCACAF spot for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 for women's football after defeating Jamaica 2-1 in the second leg of the Olympic Play-In series on Tuesday, 26 September.

In front of a record-breaking sold-out crowd at the BMO stadium in Toronto, Cloé Lacasse and Jordyn Huitema scored the two final goals of the series that will send the reigning champions back to the Olympic stage.

Jamaica’s Drew Spence opened the scoring in the second leg with The Reggae Girlz’ lone goal for the series on 33 minutes, but Jamaica failed to come back from their 2-0 loss at home on Friday. They are yet to qualify a women’s football team in the history of the Olympics.

Nearly 30,000 spectators were in attendance in Toronto on Tuesday night, which is a new record for a men’s or women’s national team game in Ontario.

After a disappointing World Cup campaign that left Canada stunned after they failed to progress out of the group stage, the 2020 champions will be given an opportunity to extend their reign at the Olympics.

The sailing competition at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou saw six more places claimed for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

    Women's dinghy

The women's dinghy place for Paris 2024 was secured for Malaysia thanks to performances by a recent graduate of World Sailing's Emerging Nations Program (ENP). Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif won gold in the ILCA 6 just a few weeks after benefiting from ENP support to take part in the Allianz Sailing World Championships. Stephanie Norton of Hong Kong was second while Jing Hua Victoria Chan of Singapore was third.

Latif said: "I'm so happy and my mum will be very proud! "Every day she's kept calling me and just telling me to keep calm and stay focussed and no pressure! I didn't target gold at first because I had just come back from injury and I just said let's focus on the boat speed and the results will come."

    Men's dinghy

Ryan Lo, who won men's dinghy gold in the ILCA 7, finished ahead of Korea's Jeemin Ha and Vishni Saravanan of India to make sure Singapore will be on the startline at next year's Olympic Games.
Lo said: "it feels really great, I'm really happy right now and it's a big relief for me to get a spot for the country for the Olympics. For now, my goal is just to try to do what I can over the next year to see what I can do to improve.

"I didn't have a very good first day - I was fourth after the first day - so I just had to dig deep and try to be consistent, just try take it one race at a time."

Lo paid tribute to his family and, in particular, his mother for supporting his sailing career. He added: "My parents have been very supportive of me, especially my mum. She would come to the sailing club every day and stay the whole day to watch me sail.

"It's been quite a long journey now - 19 years since I started sailing - and I'm very appreciative of the support I've had from my family and friends and the whole system in Singapore."

    Men's windsurfing

Bi Kun was pleased to have secured an Olympic place for China in the men's windsurfing, winning gold ahead of Taehoon Lee of Korea and Cheng Chin Yin of Hong Kong, after falling short of his own expectations at the Allianz Sailing World Championships.

The Tokyo 2020 bronze-medallist and 2018 Asian Games windsurfing champion said: "I'm not overjoyed as I was hoping to get the Olympic qualification in The Hague during the worlds last month. But winning the Asian Games again is quite an achievement and worth celebrating.

"My family and friends have been following me so closely this time. They have now become experts in explaining sailing to others. They know how to check the tracker and know how I was doing at each mark."

    Women's windsurfing

Ma Kwan Ching of Hong Kong finished second behind China's Huang Xianting in the women's windsurfing in order to guarantee Olympic qualification for her country, with Aticha Homraruen of Thailand third.
She said: "Now I'm super relieved and I'm so happy that everything has gone smoothly. This week I performed quite well, and I was mentally quite strong so that I could stay under pressure and keep my results quite stable."

    Men's and women's kite

In the men's kite, world champion Max Maeder (SGP) was the clear winner of the Formula Kite competition ahead of second-placed Zhang Haoran (CHN). However, with Singapore and China having already made sure of Olympic qualifying, the Paris 2024 place went to Thailand thanks to Joseph Weston's bronze medal.

Thailand also secured Olympic qualifying in the women's kite after Benyapa Jantawan's silver medal in Ningbo. She was second behind China's Chen Jingyue with Yongeun Lee of Korea third.

Legend Thierry Henry will coach France’s men’s soccer team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Henry, 46, will coach France’s under-21 national team for two years, according to the national federation.

France has an automatic spot in the Olympic men’s soccer field as host nation.

Men’s soccer rosters at the Olympics are for players born on or after Jan. 1, 2001, with three over-age exceptions.

Traditionally, players must be granted a release by their club teams to take part. In May 2022, French senior national team superstar Kylian Mbappé reportedly said his club, Paris Saint-Germain, will let him play at the Paris Games as an over-age exception, though player and club have since had other disagreements.

Henry, a rising star on France’s 1998 World Cup champion team, never got the chance to play in the Olympics.

France did not qualify for Olympic men’s soccer from 2000 through 2016, then returned in Tokyo, where it was knocked out in the group stage.

Henry was 19 years and 11 months old during the 1996 Atlanta Games, and would win the 1996-97 French domestic league young player of the year award. But the French roster at Atlanta 1996 included zero players younger than 21 and a half.

Instead, Henry played in the U18 European Championship in July 1996, scoring the lone goal in the final against Spain.

Since retiring in 2014, Henry was an assistant for Belgium’s men’s national team and head coach at Monaco and the Montreal Impact.

Okanagan athlete sets personal best, posts qualifying time for 2024 Paris Olympics

An Okanagan athlete is on pace to compete in her third Olympics after qualifying on Sunday for the 2024 Paris Games.

At the Berlin Marathon on Sunday, Malindi Elmore placed 13th among women with a personal-best time.

The 43-year-old from Kelowna posted a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 30 seconds, three minutes below the Olympic qualifying time of 2 : 26 : 50.

Her previous best was 2 : 24 : 50. Elmore has previously competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics as a 1,500-metre runner, then in the 2020 Summer Olympics as a marathon runner.

At the 2004 Games, she finished 37th in the 1,500, but at the 2020 Games, she finished ninth in her new sport.

Regarding the 2024 Games, three spots are available once Athletics Canada nominates teams. Elmore will receive one of the spots provided no one outruns her by the qualifying window, which closes on April 30.

On social media, fellow Canadian marathon runner Natasha Wodak of North Vancouver said, “A beautiful run indeed! 2 : 23 : 30 in Berlin for Malindi Elmore! 3 : 20 secs under the Olympic standard, and only 18 seconds of my Canadian record (Yes — she had me sweating at 2 : 30 a.m., when she was flying through the streets of Berlin on the tracker, lol). Congrats Malindi and coach Graham!”

Elmore retired from track in 2012, but returned seven years later to train as a marathon runner.

In January 2020, Elmore set the Canadian record at 2 : 24 : 50 in Houston, where she secured her spot on the Olympic team competing in Tokyo.
