Team France looks to be serious medal contenders at their home Olympics next year after posting their fourth win of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup™ Series this season. Stellar two-phase jumping performances gave the nation a decisive win in the final leg of this Series held at Boekelo (NED) this week. France finished on an overall score of 97.8 ahead of last year’s Boekelo winners Great Britain on 111.2. Team Belgium finished third on 129.0 at Boekelo, and were overall leaders of the Nations Cup Series. Whilst The Netherlands kept their home crowd entertained, by finishing sixth out of the 12 teams competing.

Once again, Military Boekelo provided a thrilling culmination of top-class sport from beginning to end, attracting some of the world’s leading riders to perform in front of record-breaking crowds. There was further excitement for Italy who qualified of the Paris Olympics next year, after finishing in overall third place and therefore eligible as the highest placed nation not already qualified.

French rider Nicolas Touzaint was doubly elated as he won the individual competition as well as playing a substantial part in his nation’s victory. He punched the air and whooped with joy after completing a magnificent Jumping clear on the French-bred Diabolo Menthe, a horse he has trained from scratch. Speaking after his cross-country round he was delighted with his horse’s performance: “I have been preparing the horse since he was three years old. The ground was very good, and everything went as planned. I was happy also qualify Diabolo Menthe for the 2024 Olympics as well as my other horse Absolut Gold.”

Touzaint was one of a few riders who were using the event to qualify their horses for Paris, and this certainly provided a good test for horses in terms of getting them used to large numbers of spectators to be expected at the Olympics and other major championships. Boekelo is famed for providing a ‘party atmosphere’ and this year was no different. Record crowds of over 60,000 turned out to watch a masterclass of sporting action at Military Boekelo which has made a great success of bringing eventing to a wider audience by partnering with big sponsors and brands who deliver ringside corporate entertaining to many thousands of guests, situated around the cross-country. This further adds to the atmosphere of the cross-country course for horse and rider who are under pressure to keep their focus when jumping fences amidst such large and animated crowds, enjoying the sense of occasion.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Welsh sailor Micky Beckett announced for Paris 2024 Olympics

Welsh sailor Micky Beckett has conquered overtraining and burnout to finally realise his Olympic dream.

The Welshman will make a long-awaited Olympic debut at Paris 2024, one of a group of 10 sailors who are the first athletes to be selected by Team GB for the Games.

A rock-solid performer, Beckett bombed out at the World Championships in 2021 and 2022, delving deep for answers and revealing an uncomfortable reality.

"Last year, I went non-stop from January to May and during that time, I barely had two days off," he said.

    "It's a strange experience. When you've got a cold or a hangover, there's a tangible symptom that's telling you what's wrong.

"When you've overtrained, you don't have that sense of perspective, you feel the same way as you did the day before. But over the space of months, you've just gradually declined in your mental acuteness, sharpness and energy to get stuff done and it's imperceptible.

"It's a tough thing that every athlete has to deal with at some point and you just have to learn the lesson."

Beckett learned the lesson indeed, winning silver at August's World Championships to qualify Team GB a quota place that he will take up in 2024.

Kelly Cheng and Sara Hughes rallied past Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss in an all-American semifinal at the world beach volleyball championships.

Cheng and Hughes prevailed 18-21, 21-19, 15-13 to become the first U.S. women’s team that didn’t have Kerri Walsh Jennings or April Ross to make an Olympic or world final since 1999.

They play defending world champions Ana Patricia and Duda of Brazil in Sunday’s final in Mexico.

The semi between Cheng and Hughes and Kloth and Nuss was a match to determine the best U.S. beach team.

Before worlds, Kloth and Nuss moved one spot ahead of Cheng and Hughes in world rankings (second place behind Ana Patricia and Duda) and global Olympic qualifying (third place). Cheng and Hughes and Kloth and Nuss are extremely likely to grab the two U.S. Olympic spots for Paris.

South Africa women qualify for Paris 2024 Olympic Games

South Africa’s women’s sevens team can look forward to their first-ever Olympics Games after winning the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens regional qualifying tournament in Tunisia.

Kenya pushed them all the way in the final in Monastir as they looked to book their place at a third Olympics having previously represented the region in Rio and Tokyo.

But the Lionesses came up just short, losing 12-7, and will now have to try their luck in the repechage – along with third place Uganda – in a bid to maintain their ever-present record.

Nadine Roos starred for South Africa throughout the two-day event, scoring nine tries and kicking 10 conversions including her side’s first try in the final.

South Africa breezed through day one with comfortable wins against Zimbabwe (26-0), Uganda (19-0) and Tunisia (27-7) with Roos contributing 37 of their points.

A Roos hat-trick on day two then helped the Springbok Women’s Sevens to beat Zambia 31-0 in the semi-final and set up a date with Kenya.

The Lionesses had kicked off their campaign with two big wins against Zambia and Ghana, scoring 68 points without reply, but nearly came unstuck against Madagascar in their final pool match, edging a tight contest 20-17.

Dennis Mwanja’s charges had a far easier ride in the semi-final, beating Uganda 27-0, and went into the final with real confidence.

However, Kenya found themselves 5-0 behind at half-time with Roos' unconverted try the only thing separating the teams.

Sharon Auma then gave Kenya hope when she levelled the scores, Grace Okulu converting to send them into a 7-5 lead.

But Maria Thshiremba had the final say for South Africa when she scored from a set piece move, Roos adding the conversion to make it 12-7.

Cody Simpson, the Australian popstar-and-actor-turned-swimmer earned his first international individual event podium on the opening night final of the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Athens. What could this performance mean for realising his dream of representing Australia at the upcoming Doha Worlds and Paris Olympics?

In Athens, Cody Simpson took another step closer to reaching his goal of representing Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Simpson tied American Michael Andrew for second in the 100m butterfly on the opening day of the second Swimming World Cup held in one of the Olympic pools that hosted water polo at the 2004 Olympic Games.

The two silver medallists swam 51.92, just one-tenth slower than event winner South Africa’s Matthew Sates winning time of 51.82. The unshaven Simpson wasn’t far from his best time of 51.78 swum last December at the Queensland Championships and swam faster than his 6th place finish a week ago in Berlin. This was Simpson’s first international medal in an individual event after earning relay gold as silver medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games as a swimmer in the preliminaries.

"Just to get faster every time," is Cody's answer to what his mission is in swimming. "So far, I am able to do that incrementally.

"I am over here for experience on the international stage and to get some racing in as I have only had one international competition prior to this."

Serbia's Olympic Committee President, Bozidar Maljkovic, announces star lineup for Paris 2024, including Nikola Jokic.

In an interview with Juan Jimenez of AS.com, Bozidar Maljkovic, the President of the Olympic Committee of Serbia and a legendary basketball coach, made a significant announcement.

He revealed that Nikola Jokic is set to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Maljkovic shared this news while reflecting on Serbia's second-place finish in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

"We didn't have NBA MVP, Nikola Jokic. Neither Vasilije Micic, the MVP of the EuroLeague. Nor Nikola Kalinic. I think we come together and get the best out of us, as in all sports," he said. "I can be proud of Novak Djokovic's season and Ivana Spanovic [Serbian long jumper], who won gold in the 2023 World Athletics Championships.

"By the way, I already announced that in Paris, they will be all, Jokic included. The Paris Games will be a party, and I am confident that Serbian sport will have a large participation."

Jokic, who took a break this past summer following an NBA championship run with the Denver Nuggets, is a crucial addition to the Serbian national team.

Having previously represented Serbia at three major FIBA competitions -- the 2016 Rio Olympics, FIBA World Cup 2019, and FIBA EuroBasket 2022 -- Jokic clinched a silver medal in 2016.

Angola became the fourth qualified team for the women’s competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, joining hosts France, reigning European champions Norway, and the Asian representative, the Republic of Korea, after winning the Women’s African Olympic Qualification Tournament in emphatic fashion.

Four sides lined up in Angola’s capital, Luanda, dreaming about a place at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with hosts Angola facing Senegal, Congo and Cameroon, with only the winners of the round-robin competition progressing to the Olympic Games, while the second-placed side secured a spot in the Olympic Qualification Tournaments in April 2024.

The four teams earned their tickets to the Women’s African Olympic Qualification Tournament after finishing on the top four places at the 2022 CAHB African Women’s Handball Championship, and they faced off once again, with some well-balanced matches providing a huge amount of drama in the Pavilhão Multiusos in Luanda.

Aiming for their eighth consecutive appearance at the Olympic Games, one of the longest active streaks and the longest in history for an African side, Angola threw off the competition in dramatic fashion, with a match against Senegal, a side which has plenty of experience and counted on players which are featuring prominently in Europe, especially in France.

With no room for mistake, the hosts were tied at the break, 11:11, with Senegal offering a strong challenge until the end, when Angola eventually took a 22:21 nail-biting win, securing a stronger position to challenge for the Paris 2024 ticket.

It was the 11th win in as many matches for Angola against Senegal, but the closest one yet, underlining the progress made by Senegal in the last few years. In the other match of the first day, Cameroon were dealt a heavy blow by Congo, as the two sides finished in a deadlock, 21:21, which hampered Cameroon’s chances for challenging for the first place.

It all boiled down to the last match of the tournament, though, as Cameroon and Angola both had three points after the second day, after Cameroon stifled Senegal’s challenge, with a 17:15 win, while Angola properly dominated Congo, thanks to their outstanding defence, clinching a 30:15 win.

"Paris 2024 confirms that the PNF (Parquet national financier) visited its headquarters on Wednesday Oct. 18 and obtained all the information it requested," the organisers said in a statement.

"Paris 2024 is cooperating fully with the investigation, as it has always done."

A judicial source said the raids were part of a probe opened into suspicion of "illegal taking of interest, favoritism and concealment" in the award of several contracts.

    ________

France’s top financial prosecutor said Wednesday that investigations into the organization of the 2024 Paris Olympics have not revealed any serious corruption or influence peddling, and that his goal is not to disrupt the event.

Speaking in an interview with RTL radio, Jean-Francois Bohnert said the potential infractions currently investigated by the the financial prosecutor’s office are “mainly formal.”

“It’s about favoritism, of illegal interest-taking,” he said. “It’s about the way certain contracts have been distributed, the arrangements ... But I don’t see any elements, at least not at this stage, that would lead the investigation towards the most serious cases of corruption or influence peddling.”

French police searched the Paris Olympic organizing committee headquarters in June as part of corruption investigations into contracts linked to the event.

The search and other related raids were linked to two preliminary investigations of the Paris Olympics. One probe was opened in 2017 — the year Paris was picked by the International Olympic Committee as the 2024 host — and the other began last year.

Asked whether arrests could take place during the Olympics, Bonhert said the office wants to “ensure the smooth running of what is going to be a global event” and a “universal party.”

“It’s not up to us to come and disrupt that order,” he added. “And that’s why we started early enough. The searches that took place were carried out more than a year before the start of the Games.”

The probe, opened in 2017, is looking into suspected embezzlement of public funds and favoritism, and concerns about an unspecified contract reached by Paris organizers, the prosecutor’s office said in June.

The 2022 investigation followed an audit by the French Anti-Corruption Agency. The prosecutor’s office said that case targets suspected conflict of interest and favoritism involving several contracts reached by the organizing committee and Solideo, the public body in charge of Olympic infrastructure.

The quotas for the men's and women's road race, as well as time trial events for both genders, have been distributed to National Olympic Committees in accordance with the latest World Ranking by Nations

On Tuesday 17 October, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) updated its World Ranking by Nations and determined the distribution of quotas for road cycling at Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Tadej Pogacar and Primoz Roglic's Slovenia, Remco Evenepoel's Belgium, Jonas Vingegaard's Denmark, Great Britain and France obtained the maximum four quotas for the men's race.

For the women's road race, Demi Vollering and Annemiek van Vleuten's Netherlands, Lotte Kopecky's Belgium, Italy, Switzerland and Poland also obtained four quotas each.

The rest of the quotas will be obtained via the results of the 2023 Road World Championships (one quota for the two best-positioned nations that have not obtained a quota through the world ranking), and the continental championships in Africa, Asia and America (the two highest ranked NOCs with one quota per NOC).

The Australian government has fast-tracked the citizenship of three athletes from South Africa, Russia and the US, in an effort to boost the nation’s chances of winning gold medals at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

With the support of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), South African canoeist Pierre Van der Westhuyzen, Russian wrestler Georgii Okorokov and US water polo player Sam Slobodien, will receive citizenships ahead of the games after having their applications fast-tracked.

The immigration minister, Andrew Giles, used ministerial discretion to intervene and grant citizenship to Van der Westhuyzen, who has only been in Australia since January 2020.

“The applicant is engaged in a sport at an elite level and, if an Australian citizen, may be selected to represent Australia at the Paris 2014 Summer Olympic Games,” Giles wrote in a note to parliament explaining his decision to intervene.

Davis scored 1,370 points totaling results from horse riding, fencing, swimming and a combined running and shooting event.

Mexico’s Mayan Oliver won with 1,423 points. Davis grabbed the last Olympic spot available by 27 points over countrywoman Phaelen French.

Pan American Games 2023: Team USA's Samuel Watson claims men's speed climbing title

Team USA's Samuel Watson won the first ever Pan American Games men's speed climbing gold medal on Sunday (22 October).

The 17-year-old star scaled the 15m wall in just 5.37 seconds to edge out teammate Noah Bratschi and secure a quota to the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

The crowd was on edge as the two Americans stepped up to the wall for the gold medal match, having been separated by just 0.05 seconds in the semi-finals.

In the end, a stumble from Bratschi gave Watson the advantage, who needed no second invitation to take the win.

The crowd erupted and Watson's father, Ray, couldn't hold back the tears.

Canadian Dressage Team Wins Bronze and Ticket to 2024 Olympics

Day two featured the Intermediate I and Grand Prix Special test for the Small Tour and Big Tour to determine team medals. Canada started and ended the day in third behind the US and Brazil, which earned the team a spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The day started once again with the Small Tour riders and Beatrice Boucher and Summerwood’s Limei were first in the ring for Canada. The overall great test was marred by two errors, but all the double coefficient elements were beautifully executed which boosted their overall mark to 70.471 and a final rank of 14th.

“Maybe I was trying to get the extra mark but unfortunately had the mistake,” Boucher explained later of the canter step during the first extended trot. “Everything else was good and floating so we managed to keep the marks up.

“I feel so grateful for the mare,” she added. “She pulled another 70 for Canada and I’m so lucky to have her and the opportunity to ride for Canada on her back, it’s amazing.”

The first of Canada’s Big Tour riders was Camille Carier Bergeron with Sound of Silence 4 who had a spectacular fault-free test. Yesterday’s performance had been hampered by a small error caused by a connection issue when SOS’s tongue went over his bit as he went into the ring. Today’s test scored a personal best of 74.511 and placed them in 6th, the highest-ranked Canadians. (Note: The Big Tour riders get a 3% bonus for the increased level of difficulty which is automatically added to their final score.)

“I’m thrilled. It’s a dream come true. After yesterday, I just went in there with the idea of doing our best. Not putting any more pressure, just having a clean test and we did so I’m really excited,” said a delighted Carier Bergeron.

Open Water Swimmer Chelsea Gubecka Becomes First Australian Named To 2024 Olympic Team

Open water swimmer Chelsea Gubecka has been announced as the first Australian Olympic Team member selected for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).

Gubecka will contest the 10km marathon swim in Paris 2024 in the iconic River Seine, 124 years after Olympic swimming was held in the river at the Paris 1900 Olympics.

The Brisbane local is a 2023 World Championships silver and bronze medallist, World Cup gold medallist and six-time national 10km champion.

Gubecka returns for her second Australian Olympic Team after making her Olympic debut at Rio 2016, only the second Australian woman with Melissa Gorman (2008, 2012) to contest the marathon swimming at two Games.

Lionel Messi has been invited to make Olympic history at Paris 2024, with organisers hoping that the Argentina icon will go gold medal-chasing.

Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, has told Infobae when asked about the prospect of Messi gracing the Games in Paris: “It would be fantastic if he could be here. The Games are an ambition for many football stars, such as [Kylian] Mbappe. For Lionel Messi it would mean a chance to write history once again. He could be the only player in history to have two gold medals and a World Cup. I don't want to interfere in the decisions of the coach, but it would be a great opportunity for Messi. If he plays, Argentina would have a higher chance of winning the gold medal, it would be fantastic for football and the Olympic Games.”

The 18-year-old home favourite dominated in Laval to win from Serbia's Stasa Gejo with Laura Rogoro of Italy in third.

French teenager Oriane Bertone delighted the home crowd in Laval by taking the European Boulder & Lead Sport Climbing Olympic Qualifier on Sunday (29 October).

The 18-year-old tacked a strong lead performance onto a dominant boulder display to overtake Stasa Gejo and claim the one spot available for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Laura Rogora, who lay eighth and last after the boulder, posted the best lead score to finish in third place.

France were already guaranteed one Olympic quota spot in the event that no athlete made it through the qualification pathway, but Bertone’s victory means that place can go to another athlete in next year's Olympic Qualifier Series.

For the second time in a row and for the sixth time in history, Japan men’s handball national team will take part at the Olympic Games, after winning the Asian Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament, which saw 11 teams battle for the ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in Doha, Qatar, between 18 and 28 October.

After not taking part at the 2022 AHF Asian Men’s Handball Championship and finishing third in the continental competition in 2020, as well as fourth at the recent 2022 Asian Games, which were played in September and October in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China, Japan were widely regarded as underdogs in the Asian Men's Olympic Qualification Tournament, with Bahrain and Qatar serving as the big favourites.

However, Japan delivered an outstanding performance throughout the 10 days of games in the Duhail Handball Sports Hall, sweeping their opponents, and creating a six-game winning streak to secure the coveted ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Tomás Barrios, Laura Pigossi, Lourdes Carle and Facundo Diaz Acosta take big wins in front of roaring Chilean crowd

It was an epic day of tennis at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, as four athletes secured their spots in finals, and with that, their spots at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Tomás Barrios was in front of his home crowd when he defeated Brazil's Thiago Monteiro --- a victory that could have been heard all through the city of Santiago.

The proud Chilean crowd sounded more like an army of 50,000 than the handful of hundreds that it was.

With every point and every play, they shook the stadium.

Singles players had a lot of the line going into their semi-final matches, as winners would secure Olympic quotas and have the opportunity to fight for a spot on top of the Pan American podium.

Brazil's Laura Pigossi and Argentina's Lourdes Carle and Facundo Diaz Acosta also won their matches in close games on Saturday, 28 October to make continental finals and obtain Olympic quotas.

Natalia Grossman climbed with confidence and poise from the first boulder and on through the lead wall, to take gold at the Pan American Games Santiago 2023. With the medal, came the ultimate prize of a spot on Team USA for the Olympic Games Paris 2024. USA Climbing teammate Brooke Raboutou took silver, 12 points back.

In the final event of sport climbing’s debut at the Pan American Games, Canadian Alannah Yip took the bronze with Anastasia Sanders finishing fourth.

In the boulders, Grossman came out strong and smooth, topping each of the first three, accumulating 84.3 points – a 14.9 point margin over Raboutou.

“As soon as I did the first boulder, I was like, ‘okay, game on – let's do this!’” said Grossman. “And I think it just set up my round really nicely.”

Anticipation is soaring as the countdown to 3x3 basketball's second appearance at the Olympics begins. Six elite teams have secured their spots for the highly anticipated 3x3 basketball competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The selection process for these teams was based on the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking as of November 1, 2023. In a thrilling culmination of qualifying events, the top three countries per gender secured their places for the Olympic stage.

    Men's Competition:

    1. Serbia - The reigning bronze medallists from 3x3's Olympic debut in Tokyo asserted their dominance, finishing atop the rankings

    2. USA - 3x3 World Cup 2023 silver medallists, despite missing out on the Tokyo Olympic Games, secured a spot and will be determined to make their mark in Paris.

    3. China - Clinched a direct qualification spot, showcasing their rapid progress in the discipline.

    Women's Competition:

    1. China - The bronze medallists from Tokyo topped the women's rankings, setting the stage for an exciting Olympic campaign.

    2. USA - The reigning Olympic gold medallists affirmed their supremacy and will be vying for another triumph in Paris.

    3. France - With their exceptional performance, France secured their place among the elite, promising an intense battle on the court.

While these six teams have secured their spots, there are still five tickets available per gender for the 3x3 Olympic competition. These remaining slots will be fiercely contested in a trio of Olympic qualifying tournaments in the first half of 2024. The host locations and the teams participating in these Olympic qualifying tournaments will be announced in December.

The 2024 Olympics are less than a year away, and one of Nebraska’s very own gymnasts will have the opportunity to compete for the gold.

Sophomore Csenge Bácskay qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics for the Hungarian team in vault while she was competing at the World Gymnastics Championships in October.

“My mom always used to say ‘you’re gonna go to the Olympics I know,’ and I was like yeah sure, I didn’t believe it.” she said.

It was the Hungarian gymnast’s third time competing at the World Gymnastics Championships that sealed the deal.

“It was unbelievable, a lot of emotions just came together, in one word it was just amazing,” Bácskay said.

Nebraska Head Coach Heather Brink said, “I’m just proud of her, it’s a lot to take on, you got a student athlete life experience happening on one side of the coins and on the other side you’re making sacrifices.”

Shriyanka Sadangi secured a Paris 2024 Olympics quota for India after finishing fourth in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event at the Asian Shooting Championships 2023 in Changwon, the Republic of Korea on Tuesday.

This was India’s 13th Paris 2024 Olympic quota in shooting and second in the women’s 50m rifle 3 positions event. A country can win a maximum of two quotas per shooting event for the Paris Olympics. Six of the 13 quotas have been obtained at the ongoing Asian Championships.

Shriyanka Sadangi scored 440.5 in the final to finish fourth. South Korea’s Eunseo Lee (468.5) won the gold medal while Chinese shooters Jiayu Han (463.3) and Siyu Xia (453.3) settled for silver and bronze, respectively.

The Asian Shooting Championships 2023 is a qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics. A total of 24 Olympic quotas are on offer with the top two finishers (one per country) in each of the 12 Olympic shooting events securing a spot for their national teams.

Since Eunseo Lee had already won the quota place for South Korea and China having reached the maximum quota limit of two in the women’s 50m rifle three positions, Shriyanka Sadangi's fourth place assured India an Olympic quota.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh got his second, and India’s fifth goal in the 59th minute of the match and finally allowed himself a smile.

The result was sealed, gold assured, and an Olympic ticket confirmed as the Indian men’s hockey team registered an emphatic 5-1 win against defending champion Japan to reclaim the Asian Games title here on Friday.

Harmanpreet’s brief smile expressed several emotions in that second – pride, happiness but most importantly, relief.

The title win assured the Indian team time up to the 2024 Olympics to prepare for it without worrying about the qualification process or planning around the qualifiers.
