Malaysian Badminton Gets New Singles Coach In Danish Olympic Mentor

Former Danish national coach Kenneth Jonassen has described his appointment as Malaysia’s new singles head coach as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” that he couldn’t pass up.

The 50-year-old, who guided Viktor Axelsen to Olympic gold in Tokyo 2020, will begin his four-year contract with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on 4 January 2025.

“I’ve always been an admirer of Malaysian badminton and how the sport is managed here. The opportunity is unique,” Jonassen told reporters at a press conference at the Malaysian Badminton Academy (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on Monday (25 November).

The initial contact came from ABM Coaching Director Rexy Mainaky, who contacted Jonassen a month after he stepped down from his position with the Danish national team.

Jonassen achieved significant success in his playing career, including multiple national and international titles.

Denver judge denies 'eleventh hour' request to bar SJSU volleyball player from MW tournament

A San Jose State volleyball player believed to be transgender is eligible for this week's Mountain West women's volleyball tournament, according to a Denver judge's ruling.

U.S. District Judge S. Kato Crews denied an "eleventh hour" request for a preliminary injunction on Monday after listening to oral arguments from both parties last week. The lawsuit was initially filed against the Mountain West Conference and San Jose State staff members Nov. 13 by 11 current and former Mountain West women's volleyball players and an SJSU assistant volleyball coach.

The lawsuit took issue with the Mountain West's transgender participation policy and claimed the plaintiffs' Title IX and First Amendment rights have been violated because an athlete they say is transgender is participating on the SJSU women's volleyball team.

The Coloradoan found no public statements by the university or the volleyball player confirming or denying whether the player is transgender.

In Crews' ruling, he wrote that “no defendant disputed that SJSU rosters a trans woman volleyball player.”

The Coloradoan has only named plaintiffs and defendants in the lawsuit. The player plaintiffs claim is transgender is not a named defendant and is not being named by the Coloradoan.

Mikaela Shiffrin up and walking in recovery from Killington World Cup crash | NBC Sports

    Eurosport

Mikaela Shiffrin reveals she came 'damn close' to puncturing organs in Killington crash - 'Incredibly thankful'

Mikaela Shiffrin has revealed that she came "damn close" to puncturing some organs in her crash on her second run of the giant slalom event in Killington, Vermont last week. The 29-year-old American, who was going for a record-extending 100th World Cup win, fell and crashed nastily into the safety netting, suffering a "puncture wound" to her abdomen and "severe muscle trauma".

American skier Mikaela Shiffrin has said she is "incredibly thankful" that her crash at Killington, Vermont last week was not worse.

Shiffrin, a two-time Olympic champion, suffered a "puncture wound to the right side of her abdomen" and "severe muscle trauma" during the giant slalom event in New England, where she was looking to extend her record number of World Cup wins to 100.

She had been in a good position to do so before she fell and crashed heavily into the safety netting on her second run.

In a graphic and detailed update, the American revealed that she and her team believed the apparatus to blame for her puncture injury was her ski pole, and she said that she was "just glad it’s limited to muscle damage."

Brazil collects four medals at Marica Futures

Pairs from Ukraine and Paraguay also make the podium in Brazil

Three Brazilian pairs, all arriving from the qualifications, achieved a complete sweep of the women’s podium at the Marica Futures on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour. Verena Figueira de Oliveira & Kyce Mikaele Martins Silva, Flavia Moura Santos Cezar & Fabrine Conceicao dos Santos and Emanuely Pereira Cardoso & Quemile Vieira de Souza earned gold, silver and bronze, respectively. The host nation triumphed in the men’s competition as well, with Igor De Carvalho Borges & Felipe Alves Pereira claiming the trophy. Ukraine’s Anton Moiseiev & Vitalii Savvin took silver, while Paraguay’s Gonzalo Melgarejo & Giuliano Massare Canillas picked up bronze.

Igor decorated his Beach Pro Tour debut with gold. It was also the first gold, but overall second Tour medal, for his partner Felipe Alves, who took silver at last year’s Miguel Pereira Futures. In Marica, the two won all five of their matches to climb to the top of the podium. One of the two sets the 10th-seeded Brazilian pair lost along the way was in their 2-1 (19-21, 21-15, 15-10) win over fellow Brazilians, qualifiers Pedro Henrique Resende Santos & Johann Ferdinand Dohmann. Igor & Felipe Alves followed up with a 2-0 (21-16, 21-14) sweep of the final against fourth-seeded Moiseiev & Savvin.

The 20-year-old Ukrainians reached the gold medal showdown on a 4-1 win-loss record. In the semifinals, they achieved a 2-0 (21-17, 23-21) upset of second-seeded Gonzalo & Giuliano of Paraguay to secure their first Beach Pro Tour podium.

Gonzalo & Giuliano bounced back with a 2-1 (21-18, 12-21, 15-13) victory over Pedro Henrique & Johann in the bronze medal match and also celebrated their first ever Beach Pro Tour podium.

Pinheiro Braathen performs snow samba to celebrate BrazilÂ’s first podium in a World Cup ski race | AP News

ItÂ’s not just soccer anymore. Brazil is finding World Cup success in skiing now, too.

Lucas Pinheiro Braathen became the first Brazilian skier to finish on a World Cup podium when he placed second in a giant slalom in Beaver Creek, Colorado, on Sunday.

Pinheiro Braathen celebrated the achievement in truly Brazilian — and Pinheiro — style: with a samba dance on the podium, the Brazilian flag wrapped around his waist and cowboy boots on his feet.

“What a moment to break out a dance in front of all these amazing fans here today. I came onto the circuit to make a difference. I came here to be myself and hopefully be an inspiration to the outcasts out there, to the people that feel a bit different, to follow their own path,” Pinheiro Braathen said.

“It’s such a privilege to be able to be the first one to bring the Brazilian flag — something that I’m so proud of — up to a winter sport World Cup podium,” he added.

China-bound Praia back at the top in the Superliga

Dentil Praia Clube secured a massive victory on Tuesday, on the eve of their trip to China, to compete at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship 2024, beating in-state rivals Gerdau Minas for first place in the Brazilian Women’s Superliga.

The Minas Gerais rivals, which will both represent Brazil at next week’s event in Hangzhou, fought week in, week out for the top of the standings and the decision came down to their last match in the first round, which ended with a narrow 3-2 (15-25, 25-21, 16-25, 25-23, 15-12) victory by Praia, who were at home on Tuesday, playing in Uberlândia.

Praia are now one point ahead of Minas (26 to 25) and are guaranteed to finish the first round of the regular season at the top of the standings as, even though third-placed Osasco São Cristovão Saúde could still get to the same 26 points, they would have fewer victories.

Woolly the Mammoth Lands First-Ever Ski Backflip in Mascot Costume at Mammoth Mountain, CA

In an unexpected moment of pure stoke, Mammoth Mountain’s iconic mascot, Woolly, stomped a flawless backflip on skis this week, marking what is believed to be the first-ever successful ski backflip performed by a mascot in full costume. The historic moment happened under clear skies on a perfectly built 10-foot park kicker in Mammoth’s Unbound terrain park. Witnesses say Woolly launched an estimated 20 feet into the air, tucked, spun, and landed clean—sending the onlookers at the base of the jump into a frenzy.

Pulling off a flip is hard enough—doing it in a bulky costume takes it to another level. The stunt pushes the boundaries of what’s possible and confirms that Wooly is not just a photo-op figure: he is a legit park skier in his own right.

Kunlavut becomes first Thai man to win Badminton Asia Championships

Kunlavut "View" Vitidsarn claims 2025 Badminton Asia Championships, Becomes first Thai Champion

Kunlavut Vitidsarn wrote a new chapter in Thai badminton history on Sunday as he became the first Thai male player to win the men’s singles title at the Badminton Asia Championships, following a victory over China's Lu Guangzu in the final in Ningbo.

The match ended midway through the second game when Lu was forced to retire due to a back injury, trailing 11-6. Kunlavut had already taken the first game 21-12 with dominant court coverage and well-placed smashes.

Vitidsarn, currently ranked World No. 5 by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), is projected to rise to World No. 2, the highest ranking of his career, pending the official update on April 15.

With the win, Kunlavut earned $35,000 (approximately 1.19 million baht), while runner-up Lu Guangzu took home $17,000. This marks the fourth overall title for Thailand at the Asian Championships but the first in men’s singles, breaking new ground after Boonsak Ponsana’s runner-up finish in 2006. The previous Asian champion from Thailand was Ratchanok Intanon, who won the women’s singles gold medal in 2015.

Kunlavut’s next appearance will be at the BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2025, a world mixed team championship to be held in Xiamen, China, from April 27 to May 4. Thailand has been drawn into Group A alongside hosts and defending champions China, Hong Kong, and Algeria.

Pieter Coetze Clocks World Championships-Worthy 50 Free Time

The penultimate night of racing unfolded at the 2025 South African Senior National Championships with additional swimmers qualifying for this summer’s World Championships.

In the men’s 50m breaststroke, Michael Houlie and Chris Smith both made the grade for Singapore.

Houlie successfully defended his national title, stopping the clock at 26.90 to clear the World Aquatics A standard of 27.33.

Runner-up Smith accomplished the same feat, registering a mark of 27.11 to join Houlie in Singapore.

Houlie stated post-race, “I think coming into this afternoon, I was really excited, I backed myself as well and know that when it’s time to race, to have that big match temperament, I know I can deliver, so I’m just happy I got my hand to the wall first.”

Regarding his protege, 19-year-old Smith, Houlie stated, “He’s very young with a lot of potential and it’s just awesome to have another world-class breaststroker to push each other.

University of Pretoria’s Pieter Coetze also notched a Singapore-worthy time as he paved his way in the men’s 50m freestyle.

This morning, the 20-year-old punched a time of 22.05 to lead the field, beating his previous lifetime best of 22.18 from the 2023 edition of this competition.

Although he was slightly slower in the final, still securing gold in 22.45, Coetze’s earlier effort matched the World Aquatics ‘A’ cut of 22.05 needed for Singapore.

Coetze said of his racing, “I just wasn’t really feeling it this afternoon as well as I did this morning, because it’s all about your feel for the water in the 50, so I felt more smooth this morning.

“I think this morning I just had no expectations so it worked out well… I’m very inconsistent in this event, it’s kind of more fun for me, the 50 free, so after I got the time this morning, I was happy to get the win tonight.”

Kristof Rasovszky Takes Down Supersuited Hungarian Record In 400 Free

Night two of the 2025 Hungarian National Swimming Championships brought the fireworks, with two national records going down by the time all was said and done.

22-year-old Texas Longhorn Hubert Ko kicked off the impressive session with a shiny new Hungarian standard of 52.24 in the men’s 100m backstroke. You can read more about his scorching performance here.

Later on, the men’s 400m freestyle national record went down at the hands of open water ace Kristof Rasovszky.

28-year-old Rasovszky stopped the clock at a super swift result of 3 : 45 .32, getting to the wall over 2 seconds ahead of his competitors.

Top-seeded Zalan Sarkany, Indiana’s 1650y freestyle NCAA champion, touched in 3 : 47 .73 for silver while David Betlehem rounded out the podium in 3 : 47 .86.

Rasovszky’s stunner tonight rewrote a supersuited record, beating the former Hungarian benchmark of 3 : 45 .68 Gergo Kis put on the books at the 2009 World Championsips.

Entering this competition, Rasovszky’s personal best rested at the 3 : 46 .56 he established during the prelims of the event at the 2023 World Championships. That means he hacked over a second off that former PB to become the speediest Hungarian ever.

Proud, Wood and Rogers produce Championship masterclasses

Ben Proud provided another sprint masterclass to defend his Men's 50m Freestyle crown as Abbie Wood set an eye-catching personal best in the Women's 200m Individual Medley on Saturday night at the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships.

Wood's time of 2:08.85 secured her place in that event for July's World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, having already done so over twice the distance earlier in the meet, while Proud's dominant splash-and-dash victory saw him well inside the Worlds qualification mark, having already been inked in for that contest by virtue of his unforgettable Olympic silver nine months ago.

Around those results, Faye Rogers continued her record-breaking form by twice resetting the European record in the S10 100m Butterfly to win the multi-classification crown, while also taking silver in a thrilling MC 200m Individual Medley, Brock Whiston taking gold.

In the fastest race of the meet, Proud made the rare walk to lane five for the 50m Freestyle final afer a brilliant heats effort by 17-year-old Jacob Mills - but in the finals environment, Ben showed his class, coming up first after a strong start and never relinquishing his lead, going two tenths inside the 21.88 World Championship requirement to take the gold.

Duncan Scott and James Guy tied for gold in the most dramatic of Men's 200m Freestyle finals to provide a truly unforgettable finale to the Aquatics GB Swimming Championships in London.

After four lengths of wild, world-class freestyle swimming, there was nothing to separate two giants of British sport, Guy and Scott matching each other in fast finishes after an eye-opening first 150m from fellow Olympic champion Matt Richards, who ultimately took bronze.

That bonkers curtain call followed on from a night of memorable moments, as Angharad Evans broke her own British record to clinch the Women's 100m Breaststroke title, Oliver Morgan completed his third consecutive men's backstroke clean sweep, the top three in the multi-classification Women's 100m Breaststroke all made their classification's Para Swimming World Championships mark, and there was yet another record for the meet for Faye Rogers.

It was the blue-riband Men's 200m Freestyle that stole the show, though, with three-time Olympic gold medallist James Guy reflecting with a smile afterwards about sharing the top step of the podium with Duncan Scott.

"I've never, ever tied for a win before! To go like that with Duncan, we were in the call room before showing each other what songs we were listening to - it's that kind of relationship where we walk to the pool together, we compete against each other, have dinner together, have breakfast together," he said.

"We've been chatting all week like it's a little holiday, it's been quite nice, so to do that at the end of the week and go head to head like that is great. It's always good fun. For that minute and a half of hell, we want to win, and that's the beauty of it.

"The relay looks good. For April, that final, that's pretty good, so it's looking good for the summer. I'm off next week, going to Mallorca with my fiancee, checking out the wedding venue - I think she wants some wedding time now. It's been swimming all week, now it's that time!"

As for Duncan, it meant a third British gold to round out his week, adding to his 200m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley titles

"Me and Jim have been racing for so long, it's a pleasure always going head-to-head in the last event, you're always thinking about it all week. I was just really happy to be in there, I didn't quite know where I'd be at in this meet, I think I've surprised myself quite a lot and I'm really happy with that, just happy to be involved to be honest, so I'm buzzing with that," he said.

Lea Boy, Oliver Klemet use 1500m speed to win inaugural 3km knockout sprints at World Cup in Ibiza

Germany celebrated twice on Saturday morning as Lea Boy and Oliver Klemet timed their races perfectly to come out on top in the 3km knockout sprints at the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup in Ibiza.

It was the debut of a new event - three rounds of tournament style swims with 46 women racing 1500 meters, with the top 20 racing 1000m, before the final ten going all out for the last 500 meters.

Germany’s Lea Boy was hardly a factor in the first two swims, biding her time perfectly to come out on top in the final 500m by three seconds at 5 : 18. 50. Boy, age 25, was fourth in the first heat and seventh in the semi–final. With the final outcome determined by the final swim, one doesn’t need to go for time in the first two rounds, just needing to do enough to advance to the next round.

Boy did that perfectly as she won the first ever 3k knockout race contested at the World Aquatics Open Water Swimming World Cup.

China sweeps five golds on opening day at Diving World Cup Super Final

In front of a capacity crowd, China claimed all five gold medals on the first day of the World Aquatics Diving World Cup Super Final at the National Aquatic Center here on Friday.

Known for their remarkable'splash disappearance' techniques, Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi earned the loudest cheers as the duo made their first pair performance since last summer's Paris Olympics, defending their title in the women's 10m platform synchro with a total of 350.88 points.

"We haven't trained together for synchro for over six months. We only teamed up this morning during the warm-up session and found ourselves still well synchronized, particularly on our last dive. However, I need to refine my individual techniques," said 19-year-old Chen.

Quan, 18, acknowledged the increased physical training she had undertaken to overcome growth-related challenges. "I am becoming stronger than before. I hope to find a better way to balance my current weight and height," she remarked.
