The mission of the Salty Dawg Sailing Association (SDSA) is to educate sailors, build camaraderie, and facilitate offshore passages. They host the largest rally leaving the US East Coast each fall for the Caribbean, and it was on this trip when tragedy occurred.

SDSA president Bob Osborn reported on November 14 that a crew member aboard the 46-foot yacht Logos that was sailing with the SDSA’s Fall Rally to Antigua had unexpectedly passed away while at sea.

On the afternoon of November 12, the skipper and owner of Logos, Tim Cayward, reached out to the SDSA shoreside support team concerned about his crew member Ralph Erickson’s medical condition stemming from severe sea sickness.

The SDSA team, which cannot give actual medical advice, discussed several courses of action. Team member Kevin Ferrie communicated with Logos the available options, including evacuation, but this was rejected when Erickson was able to hydrate, seemed to be improving, and had a strong pulse.

But at 2:00 am on November 13, the shoreside team manager Tim Metcalf received a phone call from the U.S. Coast Guard, Sector 5, to inform him that they had been informed by Cayward that Erickson had died in his sleep. The cause of death remains to be determined.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Amy Yang picked a lucrative time for her first LPGA title on American soil.

Yang birdied her last two holes for a 6-under 66 to win the CME Group Tour Championship and claim the $2 million prize, matching the largest in women's golf.

"I was so nervous down the stretch," Yang said. "But I try to tell myself: 'I can do this. I can do this.' I'm so happy I made it."

The victory was her fifth on the LPGA Tour, the previous four coming in Asia.

Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 35, was sentenced on Friday to 90 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the murder of Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson.

A jury of her peers in Travis County delivered a guilty verdict on Thursday in the nine-day trial at the Blackwell-Thurman Criminal Justice Center in Austin, Texas.

Attorneys presented witnesses in the penalty phase, which began late Thursday afternoon immediately after the jury took less than three hours to deliberate and return a guilty verdict for murder. Armstrong had pled not guilty to first-degree murder charges.

Stand-up paddlers hit the water for World Championships in Pattaya
    20 November 2023

The biggest ever edition of the world championships drew competitors from 52 nations, as they raced their way through the technical, long distance and sprint disciplines.

In the technical open, Spain's Esperanza Barreras and Connor Baxter from the United States won the women's and men's finals. Known as the 'marathon' of stand-up paddling, the long distance open saw the athletes tackle a 15km course. Barreras successfully defended her crown, while France's Noic Garioud bounced back from disappointment in the shorter discipline to win his first long distance title. Finally, America's Seychelle Webster and Garioud won the women's and men's sprint open, which involved a fast and furious 200m sprint in a straight line. • 11th Hour Racing Team is World Sailing's Team of the Year

Skipper Charlie Enright was on hand to pick up the Team of the Year prize at the World Sailing annual awards night held in Malaga, Spain on Tuesday evening.

From January to July of this year, Enright led his 11th Hour Racing Team to a come from behind victory in The Ocean Race, demonstrating remarkable resilience and fortitude over the toughest fully crewed offshore race in the world.

And for Enright, the victory was a team effort:

"Winning this race has been such an achievement for the entire team," he told the crowd at a homecoming event in Newport, Rhode Island at a victory party during the summer. "We went through the first half of the race not winning a leg and then, as I’m sure this community remembers, we won Leg 4 into our hometown of Newport. This was a turning point for us in the race and the momentum stayed with us right through to the final victory."

A stellar field of Australian and International players will compete for the Joe Kirkwood Cup and $2M in prizemoney, the richest prize on the Challenger PGA Tour of Australasia.

Lee bounced back from an early bogey to close out his win with a 3-under par round of 68 and 20-under par total at Royal Queensland Golf Club, Japan’s Rikuya Hoshino (68) showing admirable composure in the final group to snare second at 17-under.

Victorian Marc Leishman, whose 7-under 64 was the best of the last day, birdied his final two holes to claim outright third with Lee’s good friend and fellow West Australian, Curtis Luck, playing the back nine in 4-under for a round of 69 and fourth spot.

“I’ve always thought I could win, but it took a while to get over the hump,” Lee said on the 18th green.

“But two wins in the last month or so, I’m really proud of my team and myself.

On a gray autumn afternoon in the bay of A Coruńa, with light southwesterly winds, Andrea Mura departed on November 18th at 14:00 local time (13:00 UTC) for his Global Solo Challenge, joining the fleet of thirteen competitors already at sea.

Vento di Sardegna, the Italian sailor's Open 50', swiftly cut through the water, proudly displaying the Italian flag and the Sardinian standard on its hull. Andrea, tired from the strenuous preparation of the preceding months but motivated, finally looked towards the horizon with calmness.

His family, his wife Daniela and his young children Lucas and Marvel, accompanied him to the starting line on the organization's RIB. It was a moving and shared moment, and during his journey, they will continue to support him and give him the necessary strength, albeit from afar.

For Mura, who in his maritime career has spanned from Olympic campaigns to the America's Cup, circumnavigating the world solo was a dream he no longer wanted to postpone. Now or never. The innovative format of the Global Solo Challenge immediately appealed to Andrea. He saw in this event the opportunity to realize a project he had attempted before but which had foundered in 2016, when, due to lack of funds, he lost the opportunity to participate in the Vendée Globe. "I was aiming for the Vendée Globe because I wanted to push myself beyond the competitions I had already won. Unfortunately, that project did not come to fruition. Now, the GSC offers me the opportunity to sail around the world with my 23-year-old boat."

Indeed, Vento di Sardegna, born from the design of Umberto Felci, has always proven to be sturdy, reliable, and well-built, and with a proven track record of results. Andrea had purchased it as a training boat before transitioning to the IMOCA class. Nonetheless, over the years, Andrea has optimized and kept the boat competitive. He changed the mast and the rigging, lightened the bulb, and, thanks to the sponsor Lamborghini, rebuilt the rudders and stanchions in titanium.

After the step back that was the pandemic a few years ago now, the LPGA has gone from strength to strength.

Nowhere has this been reflected more than in the record purses announced alongside the 2024 schedule.

The LPGA announced a $116.5 million total purse in 2024, a $15.2 million raise from $101.3 million this season to give players a terrific dangling carrot.

The schedule also includes another Solheim Cup, contested for back-to-back years for the first time since 2002-03, and the Olympics tournament at Le Golf National in Guyancourt.

“The 2024 LPGA Tour schedule reflects our historic growth,” LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan said in a statement. “With new events and improved geographic flow, enhancing the athlete experience, our global reach and competitiveness have never been stronger.”

The season gets underway on 18 January at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions and concludes at the CME Group Tour Championship on 24 November, a little more than 11 months later.

The number of non-major events on the LPGA schedule with purses above $3 million has increased from four to ten.

From this season to the next, the purses of four events—the Mizuho Americas Open ($2.75 million to $3 million), the Meijer LPGA Classic ($2.5 million to $3 million), the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship ($2.3 million to $3 million), and the Lotte Championship, which saw a $1 million rise ($2 million to $3 million)—rose to the $3 million mark.

Richmond’s Monique Conti has stormed to her first AFLW best and fairest, winning the league’s highest honour with two rounds to spare.

Last year’s runner-up to Brisbane’s Ally Anderson, Conti polled 20 of a possible 24 votes across the first eight rounds to add the best and fairest to her fifth All-Australian selection.

The star midfielder, who juggles football with her basketball commitments with the WNBL team Melbourne Boomers, put an exclamation mark on her win by earning a maximum three votes in round 10.

Conti, 23, won with 23 votes out of a possible 30.

When asked when she thought the award was hers, Conti said with a laugh “[the] last round”.

“I don’t know. I just had a pretty good game last round. We had an amazing win, I was so happy to finish on that.

“Leading into that [final vote count] it was like, OK, this is actually real.”

Coaches will no longer be able to weigh gymnasts under new British Gymnastics rules designed to stop "harmful practices" which it says are "on the fringes of abuse".

The 2022 Whyte Review found "systemic" physical and emotional abuse in the sport "borne of inadequate practice".

This included athletes having their bags searched for food in the "tyranny" of weight management.

"Weighing was used as a punishment," former gymnast Eloise Jotischky said.

"In the past, because there were no policies relating to excessive and inappropriate weight management, often coaches were able to kind of exploit that and would use very harmful practice," Jotischky told BBC Sport.

In June 2022, Jotischky became the first - and to date only - gymnast to win a civil case against British Gymnastics for the abuse she experienced from coach Andrew Griffiths, with British Gymnastics admitting full liability and issuing an apology.

She alleges that between 2016 and 2018, she was left "physically exhausted" after being subjected to inappropriate weight management techniques by Griffiths, who is no longer permitted to coach.

"I think it's a big step," Jotischky said of the new policies. "It's massive to have something in concrete."

Luke Rowe has signed a new two-year contract with Ineos Grenadiers and says he is hoping to create more "incredible memories" with the team.

The Welshman has put pen to paper on a deal will keep him with the team until 2025, as has team-mate Kim Heiduk.

It means Rowe will have spent 14 consecutive seasons with Ineos and will make him the third-longest tenured rider on the squad.

Micah Rudosky, amateur Bryan Hoops match Chopra's 7-under 64 at TPC Scottsdale (Champions)

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.– Three weeks shy of his 50th birthday, two-time PGA TOUR winner Daniel Chopra opened with a bogey-free 7-under 64 on Tuesday at TPC Scottsdale (Champions Course) to claim a share of the opening-round lead of the PGA TOUR Champions Qualifying Tournament (Final Stage) with Micah Rudosky and the field’s lone amateur, Bryan Hoops.

At the conclusion of 72 holes at Final Stage, the top five finishers will be exempt into all open, full-field PGA TOUR Champions events in the 2024 season. There will be a playoff if needed to break ties.

Australian Cameron Percy used an eagle at the par-4 14th (his fifth hole of the day) from 114 yards to post a 6-under 65, good for a share of fourth place with Shane Bertsch.

Chopra, who claimed three victories on the Korn Ferry Tour in addition to his two TOUR titles, finished the day both elated and, admittedly, a bit surprised.

“There was a lot of anxiety starting today,” said Chopra. “I haven’t played an official tournament since July. I took six months after that and didn’t even hit a ball. I just didn’t have the motivation. There was nothing to practice or play for. I had just been waiting for this.”

Speaking publicly for the first time about what his post-racing career may hold for him, Israel-Premier Tech's Chris Froome has revealed plans for a cycling academy to be started in his name in his birth country of Kenya.

The 38-year-old disclosed the idea to his friend and former teammate, Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), on the Welshman's Geraint Thomas Cycling Club Podcast.

"It has always been at the back of my mind wanting to do it, and I think now as I get towards the end of my career, it's the perfect time to start setting things up," said Froome. "Basically [we're] looking at starting a Chris Froome Cycling Academy out in Kenya at the base of Mount Kenya, up at altitude at 2,000m."

Although he holds a British passport and an Olympic bronze medal from his time racing for Team GB, Froome was born in Kenya's capital city of Nairobi and explained that his experiences as a child at the Banda School left a lasting impact on him, which has given him the desire to promote cycling in East Africa.

"I used to run cross-country back there and any time we did inter-school cross-country or anything, I'd just get killed by the Kenyans. They are obviously the best long-distance runners in the world. There was always a part of me all those years I was winning the Tour that kind of made me feel a little bit ridiculous, inadequate knowing that there are much better athletes - in the true sense of an endurance athlete - much better athletes than me back in East Africa.

"But they just haven't had access to bikes, cycling doesn't really exist there. They have no equipment, no training, no structure at all."

The number of journeys cycled in London has increased by 20 per cent since before the pandemic while hybrid working continues to limit demand for public transport, it was revealed on Wednesday.

The annual Travel in London report said the number of bike trips had increased from 1.19 million a day last year to 1.26 million this year– an annual rise of 6.3 per cent, and up a fifth on 2019.

Cycling now accounts for 4.5 per cent of all trips in London - up from 3.6 per cent in 2019. However, many of these were shorter journeys, and cycling levels in central London remain “subdued” due to fewer cycle commuters.

The report, which provides a fascinating insight into Londoners’ changing travel patterns, reported 1.7 per cent annual increase in cycle journeys in central London 8.2 per cent in inner London and 5.5 per cent in outer London.

A total of 24 per cent of Londoners reported having cycled in the last year, though women and black and minority ethnic Londoners continue to be under-represented.

Transport for London attributed the rise in cycling to the increase in cycle lanes, which now total 220 miles, though not all are protected from vehicles.
