Tour de France: Victor Lafay gives Cofidis their first win since 2008 on stage 2

Victor Lafay (Cofidis) claimed victory on stage 2 of the Tour de France with a perfectly-timed move beneath the flamme rouge in San Sebastian.

The Frenchman attacked with intent from the elite group that had formed over the climb of the Jaizkibel in the finale, and he held off a fast-closing Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) to claim Cofidis' first stage victory since 2008.

Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) finished safely in the front group to retain the yellow jersey, but his teammate Pogacar was the big winner among the overall contenders. He moves up to second overall, 6 seconds off Adam Yates, thanks to the 12 seconds of time bonuses he picked up across the day.

Fowler bested Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin in a playoff for his first win since the 2019 Phoenix Open

2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic leaderboard, grades: Rickie Fowler earns long-awaited win No. 6 in playoff

ickie Fowler was back at some point earlier this season. Possibly after the Zozo Championship in October, where he finished T2. Maybe it was after the Phoenix Open in February, when he finished T10 following a mediocre final day. Or perhaps it was when he led the U.S. Open after 54 holes just two weeks ago at Los Angeles Country Club.

"Rickie's back" became official on Sunday, however, when he won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in a playoff over Collin Morikawa and Adam Hadwin with a birdie on the first hole of bonus play.

Getting there was a grind, both metaphorically through the last four years of not winning PGA Tour events, and literally; Fowler looked to be kicking away this tournament late in the day after he was the heavy favorite going into the final round.

Following a great start to his day, Fowler stalled over the last few hours of his round, making par on 10 straight holes going to the 72nd. On a day when Morikawa shot 64 and Hadwin had jumped past him, Fowler had to birdie the last hole just to get into the playoff. He got it with one of the more clutch shots you'll ever see a professional hit.

Winner: Rickie Fowler – Earnings: $1,584,000

    Stage 3 - Amorebieta-Etxano > Bayonne

Length: 193.5 km or 120.24 miles

Start time: 13:00 Sunday, Central European Summer Time (CEST) or Sunday 18:00 Thai time or 7:00 am Eastern Standard Time

Should last about 4 ½ hours

Tour de France: stage three – live updates

William Fotheringham on stage three: Finally, something resembling a normal stage for the Tour’s opening week. There are several nasty little Basque Country climbs but they come early in the stage and the run-out is downhill. So it’s bunch sprint time, which means British eyes will be on Mark Cavendish, although the chances are it will be last year’s sprint star, Fabio Jakobsen, in the spotlight.

Jasper Philipsen lays down Tour de France marker in stage three sprint win

Jasper Philipsen of Belgium, riding for the Alpecin-Deceuninck team, won the 193.5km third stage of the 2023 Tour de France after a bunch sprint finish in Bayonne.

The 25-year-old, winner of two stages in last year’s Tour, took his sixth win in Grand Tour racing ahead of Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain Victorious) and the Australian Caleb Ewan. Mark Cavendish, in what was the first opportunity for him to become the all-time record stage winner in the Tour, finished sixth.

As the convoy headed for the French border on the largely flat route from Amorebieta-Etxano to Bayonne, the emphasis went from pintxos to Pichon. On the final day in the Basque Country, Arkea-Samsic team’s Laurent Pichon was alone at the front as the Tour crossed into France for the first time in 2023.

‘You deserve every accolade’: Icon’s high praise after SVG stuns NASCAR with ‘unreal’ debut win

'Perfect' SVG stuns USA to win on debut | 01:52

Shane van Gisbergen can add NASCAR race winner to his already-stacked resume.

The New Zealander – the reigning Supercars champion, two-time Bathurst winner and three-time series winner – claimed a stunning victory in NASCAR’s maiden street race in Chicago, making him the first person in 60 years and the first in the modern era to win a NASCAR race on debut.

If that wasn’t enough, he boasts GT wins in the Bathurst 12 hour and six-hour races, dominated as a youngster in New Zealand’s open-wheel Formula series, and has also competed in the World Rally Championship in New Zealand.

No wonder his twitter bio reads: “Race Everything.”

But his stunning victory on NASCAR debut might just be the biggest of his career - at least in a global context.

“This was so cool and it’s what you dream of,” a stunned van Gisbergen said afterwards.

Hindley wins Tour de France stage five as Vingegaard outguns Pogacar on climb

Jai Hindley of Australia won the first mountain stage of the Tour de France after the cruel climb of the Col de Marie Blanque saw Adam Yates’s race leadership evaporate and then exposed the frailties of his UAE Emirates teammate, the former Tour champion, Tadej Pogacar.

As Bora-Hansgrohe’s Hindley rode alone over the climb and sped down the descent into Laruns, to win the stage and take the maillot jaune of overall race leadership, the defending champion, Jonas Vingegaard, left Pogacar in his wake, one kilometre from the summit. It may yet prove a definitive moment in this year’s race.

Hindley, riding his first Tour, seemed stunned by his solo success. “I didn’t really expect this when I rolled about of bed this morning,” the 27 year old said. “I’ve been watching the Tour since I was six years old and never thought I’d find myself in the yellow jersey.”

Pogacar wins stage six as Vingegaard takes yellow

    Pogacar speaks!

I would not say revenge, but it does feel sweet to take some time back today. Yeah, I was a bit worried yesterday. The display that Jonas showed yesterday was incredible. I was thinking when he was pulling on Tourmalet that it was the same again, and maybe we could pack up our bags and go home. But I hung on. Now I think the gap [to Vingegaard in the GC standings] is perfect.

That’s my 10th stage victory. I’m coming for you, Mark [Cavendish]! No, no, I’m joking. He’s a long way ahead.

Pogacar dedicates his victory to his girlfriend and fellow professional cyclist, Urska Zigart, who crashed yesterday in the Giro Donne, the women’s Tour of Italy. “She’s not racing today. I got all of my power from her,” he says.
