    horse racing

Anyone interested in top quality racehorses would of liked to see the Cox Plate
over 2040 m in Melbourne today and watch the great Winx flog the rest by 8 lengths.
She has been unbeaten in 13 starts, will take a while to beat Black Cavier's record of 25,
but don't think the owners are interested in racing the guts out of her.

I would have loved to have seen that race today, any chance it might be on YouTube.
I have watched a lot of Youtube docus on Northern Dancer and other U.S.A. Classic winners but apart from Phar Lap there's a lack of Aussie horse videos.
I believe Aussie sprinters are the fastest in the world.

^Winx paid 1.70 the win. Short priced for such a quality field, but a good price for such a quality horse (as they said on a sports show this morning).

The bookies must of thought she could not win 2 years in a row against a quality field,
now it is the spring carnival leading up to the Melbourne cup, so a lot of international
horses are having a go,but she showed them she is the best mare running today.
I thought she would start at even money,so was a good bet if you had enough to risk.

^ 1.70 is odds on. You put a dollar on and you win 70 cents

a 340 dollar horse and a hundred dollar whore

    By Charles Bukowski

don’t ever get the idea I am a poet; you can see me
at the racetrack any day half drunk
betting quarters, sidewheelers and straight thoroughs,
but let me tell you, there are some women there
who go where the money goes, and sometimes when you
look at these whores these onehundreddollar whores
you wonder sometimes if nature isn’t playing a joke
dealing out so much breast and ass and the way
it’s all hung together, you look and you look and
you look and you can’t believe it; there are ordinary women
and then there is something else that wants to make you
tear up paintings and break albums of Beethoven
across the back of the john; anyhow, the season
was dragging and the big boys were getting busted,
all the non-pros, the producers, the cameraman,
the pushers of Mary, the fur salesman, the owners
themselves, and Saint Louie was running this day:
    a sidewheeler that broke when he got in close;
he ran with his head down and was mean and ugly
and 35 to 1, and I put a ten down on him.
    the driver broke him wide
took him out by the fence where he’d be alone
even if he had to travel four times as far,
and that’s the way he went it
all the way by the outer fence
    traveling two miles in one
and he won like he was mad as hell
    and he wasn’t even tired,
and the biggest blonde of all
all ass and breast, hardly anything else
went to the payoff window with me.

that night I couldn’t destroy her
    although the springs shot sparks
and they pounded on the walls.
later she sat there in her slip
    drinking Old Grandad
    and she said
what’s a guy like you doing
living in a dump like this?
    and I said
    I’m a poet

and she threw back her beautiful head and laughed.

    you? you . . . a poet?

    I guess you’re right, I said, I guess you’re right.

but still she looked good to me, she still looked good,
and all thanks to an ugly horse
    who wrote this poem.

Liked Almandin's jockey putting away the persuader on the run to the line,he knew he had it won,bet a trifecta, ended up 2-3-11,kicking cans on the way home, only $20 loss.
ran into mate on way to TAB,said do you want me to place a bet for you,he gave me $5.
he did not know a horse so i said, pick a number from 1-24,he picked 17,arsey bastard.

Backed a couple of Weir horses in races 5&6 both got up paid for the day.
I've nearly convinced the missus that punting is the way to go.

“It’s not until you see these photos of the Melbourne Cup, Australia’s most drunken and depraved horse racing event, that you can really understand just how out of hand the whites can get,” said Haisley.

“Following the proud British tradition of getting equal parts dolled and f***d up at horse races— it is a perfect event for young and old alike to don their finest of outfits and guzzle copious amounts of alcohol. The entire state of Victoria even gets the day off from work, since Melbourne Cup day has been decreed an official local holiday.”

^ oh yes , what happened to quality reporting, todays Metro newspaper had pics of the Melbourne cup, pics of dressed up drunks.
In My childhood it would have been pics of the finish of a great horse race. Horses where more important back then.
