^Perhaps he does. If he could get Terry out of retirement to partner his club mate, Cahill, in defence, we would be well solid. With Johnson right back and Cole Baines or Shaw left....the latter scummer would be better deployed at left half imho
Playing Milner or Cleverly in any position?

Individually there are a number of excellent in form players. He needs to avoid the trap of picking too many egos, who will prove difficult to manage.
Australia will piss it in with Viduka, Kewell and Gus seeing us through to the next round.

I am just a tiny bit more optimistic than that.Originally Posted by astasinim

Is Sherwood resting Townsend for the WC?
Sterling, Sturridge, Ox, Barkley, Shaw, Lallana all looking good at this time of the season.
Add Gerrard, Baines, Jagielka and Hart as the core leadership.
I have doubts over Walker/Johnson/Wilshere/Carrick/Henderson/Lampard.
No alternative to Walker/Johnson at Right back? Carrick should go as he actually plays football. Plus Henderson on current form just.
No sympathy vote for Lampard.
Can't recall the last time Rooney made a major contribution to an England team but imagine the fuss if he were to be left out. Surrounded by pace and talent he might actually fire this time.
Heart of Gold and a Knob of butter.
God it's starting already.
When's the song coming out?
"Engerland is going to Brazil Ner Ner Ner we're going to bring the cup home Dee Doo Dee Doo They're coming home, They're coming home, England's fucking losers are coming home..."

In the context in which posted, yes. Carrick is good lad to have around as a senior pro and a decent footballer. I did say I had doubts about both, but unless you have a better alternative?Originally Posted by Bettyboo
Interestingly there is a link in the Telegraph where you can pick your own squad and compare it with other notables.
I notice that only Michael Owen thinks Zaha should be preferred to Rooney. Has he been sharing it out or something?
Everyone else (myself included) thinks Sterling Sturridge Wellbeck Rooney Townsend is probably the best you could do.
There's no sign of Cleverly in there at all.

I'd say his chances are very slim.Originally Posted by harrybarracuda

I'd take Milner ahead of him - useful squad player.

They're all crap, basically. I'll be surprised if we make it out of the group stages.
I agree re Townsend. The fact that Milner is a useful squad player is the crux of the problem with England sides in recent years.Originally Posted by cyrille
England should only take players on current form who are playing week in week out for their clubs. Truly top players do not need or want to be rotated or rested in major international competitions, just so squad players like Milner can get a game.
The entire selection and playing policy is flawed if it allows people in just to give them a game. I would want players fighting each other for the shirt to show how much it means to them. Then fighting for each other on the pitch when they are picked. I suspect Mr Hodgson is just too nice to put that into practice.
Hodgson has a highly competitive streak when called for, don't worry about that.
Every squad has a midfielder in the mould of Milner, and if you're only taking the best England players who regularly start for their clubs then you won't be taking a full squad.
Is Paulinho, for example, that brilliant? Luiz?
The Uruguay captain isn't first choice for West Brom: he's utter pants.
England's main problem imho is not that they'll dismally lack quality. It's that they'll find it really difficult to adapt.
Adapt to what? Playing teams 20 times better than they are?
Think Milner should go too. Times he does get on the ptich for citeeeeeeeeh, he does well...touch spot on, like he's really trying to challenge for a starting place as an Englishman in sky blue...a definite for the squad imo.
Why slag em off, no-one seriously believes we have a chance, but there's talent there. 33s makes it a decent bet.....along with Chile at 50s
I reckon take Lampard along with Gerard as the seniors. Gerard's inspirational still. Lampard hits a lovely dead ball. Both of them know how to finish.
OK,
Make your pick. To win it.
