What program do I need and how do I download torrents on a mac?

not sure if its the best but I use Vuze - the main reason being the plugin "speed scheduler" which is great for downloading torrents in the middle of the night during my Off Peak time.

Just remember to slow your uploads if you have quota limits otherwise they will gone in a flash!

Depending what stuff youre after apps, music or movies some sites are better than others.

The old azureus might not work on 10.5, might be the new Vuze that works on Leopard.

What do I do next after I've installed it? Sorry, I need a real idiots guide here.

I'm mostly after music but I want whole albums not just random songs.

Are there any tips on what I need to look for in torrents. I've heard about leeches or something and something something.

Transmissions OK if youre on public trackers on a Mac, Vuze is java I think and takes up more resources. I use azureus now though, I used it on Win, downloaded Vuze for Mac and thought it was shite. Old version works fine for me.

I'm on Leopard.

I'm on the set up wizzard now and its asking me for what TCP listing port i want to use. The one thats automatically in the box is port 40563 but its not passing the test.

Anyone got a friggin clue what all that means?

Torrent sites generally only list full albums anyway

Demonoid is a private(ish) tracker this means you log in get your torrent and it monitors how much you have downloaded to how much you upload, called your ratio.
eg You want an album thats 75mb size, you download it all and while it was downloading it uploads to other people at the same time. If it uploaded 35mb in the time it took to download your ratio for it would be 1:0.5 so youve downloaded a full one and uploaded half back. Sites like Demonoid can penalise you if you dont give back.

Demonoid probably has the worst ratio tracker around, most private ones update automatically but Demonoid does it off your IP, if you turn off your modem and turn it on you will most likely get a new IP address so you need to log in to Demonoid and surf the site a bit so it gets your new IP address so it can keep track of how much is downloaded and how much is uploaded.

thing is with demonoid it doesn't matter, they don't care about ratios and don't ban you, even butterfly is allowed on there.

never had to fiddle with ports.

isn't there a randomise port function in azureus?

Look in Azureus under Tools/Options/Plugins/UPnP and NAT-PMP, and enable it.
Enable UPnP in your router and bobs your uncle.

Demonoid isnt that strict but if/when TFP gets rockin he might get another private one and think its the same and get booted. Best to lay the foundation and get in the habit of uploading from the start.

O.k I tink I'm nearly sorted. I'm not sure if i got the port thing sorted but we'll see when I actually try to down load something.

I've got my account sorted at demoniod and I've seached for something I want to down load. Whats next? If I just click download on the screen then how is that using Azureus.

And when I open Azures what information do I put where to let it know what I want?
