Birmingham is a city with a proud and welcoming gay community. Not only do we have Birmingham Pride - the biggest 2-day Pride celebration in the country - we are also blessed with a thriving gay village and queer-friendly venues and events across the city.But for the first time ever, groundbreaking census data has revealed just how many LGBT+ people live in our city - and the country as a whole. In total, around 1.5 million people identify as either lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB+) in the UK.
Here in Birmingham three per cent of the population identified with an LGB+ orientation - amounting to approximately 30,000 people. It’s now also possible to identify which specific areas in Brum are home to most LGB+ people.

Importantly, these figures do not include trans and other gender non-confirming people - this data was collected separately. These are the top 5 gayest areas of Birmingham.

Selly Oak tops the list as the gayest area of Birmingham. The densely populated student town is home to around 25,885 people - 11.3% identify as LGB+.
The majority of students living in the area attend the nearby University of Birmingham. The Guild of Students' LGBTQ+ Association exists to represent those who consider themselves to have a minority sexual/romantic orientation at the university.
The Edgbaston area around the University is also up there with the gayest parts of the city. 8.6% of the population of Edgbaston South and University are LGB+.
2) Birmingham city centre
Not only is Birmingham city centre home to our city’s Gay Village - it is also home to hundreds of LGB+ people. 1 in 10 people (10.2%) living in the city centre are gay - making it the second gayest area in Birmingham.
The area around Atwood Green and Park Central also ranks highly with 7.5% of the population identifying as LGB+.
3) Digbeth
Just a stone's throw away from the city centre, Digbeth is third on our list. The area - which boasts a thriving night-time economy - is home to a high number of LGB+ people.
Just over 10 per cent (10.1%) of Digbeth’s population identify as either gay, lesbian or bisexual.
4) Ladywood and the Jewellery Quarter
Ladywood and the Jewellery Quarter is home to a large proportion of LGB+ people. 9% of the population there identify as gay.
5) Stirchley and Bournville
In 2021, Stirchley was named as one of the top places to live in Britain and the area is home to a hundreds of LGB+ people. Alongside neighbouring Bournville, the Stirchley ward has a population of roughly 9000.
Over 500 people here identified with an LGB+ orientation in the latest census.
