I made yours, it was damn good. Probably not quite as good as yours, but not bad. Loopers FPS does not inspire me to try…

Looper, you inspired me today to make use of a pack of old, freezer-burnt cod fillets with your FPS exploits. I also had some leftover mash from last weekend's Cottage Pie... and I even found a couple of carrots in the bottom of the fridge.

Of course there were plenty of bags of frozen peas in the freezer, so game on!

I found a BBC recipe on the interweb that said to mix flour, butter and spring onions in a pan before stirring in milk. We had no spring onions but I found a few red onions in the gardener's kitchen.

The recipe recommended something called a 'ball whisk' to mix the milk in. Never heard of such a thing before but I have plenty of spoons. Along with the milk I stirred in four fillets worth of scissor-cut up cod fillets, two chopped par-boiled carrots and a liberal lashing of frozen peas.

The recipe demanded several herbs and shit, of which I could find none, so I made do with salt and pepper. WTF likes Dill anyway?

It also asked for a dollop of mustard.

This I knew I had... a few years ago most of my work was West Africa, for which I worked out of an office in Paris and made full use of my baggage allowance. I found the mustard I remembered in the back of the fridge. Lovely!

And then I thought about when I was last working in Paris... pre-oil crash...

Yeah, bollocks to that. Eight years seems like a long time, even for mustard. I bet Chitty would go for it though!

So anyway, sans herbs and mustard I decanted the FPS mix...

And even though I say so meself, the amount was absolutely perfectly judged, apart from leaving no room for the mashed potato topping!

This is where I go off topic, sorry Looper.

I didn't make FPS, I made FPNS... Fish Pie No Surprise!

No Surprise, because it was Fish Pie!

Baked in the convection oven with a topping of Makro grated cheese!

A bit gloopy (Loopy?) maybe, but I could definitely taste the cod over the flour. It was filling as well... the daughter didn't even want a pudding afterwards.

And there will be at least one more dinner and a couple of lunches out of this!

    FPNS... AFAF...

    As Filling As Fukk!

I can understand Mr Kinder keeling over just looking at that. Looks like you could have plastered the walls with it.

    You have a brave daughter!

I'd have kept the mustard as long as it had never been opened.

I wish you had linked to this blokeworthy nugget prior to commencement of batch 2 PAG...

I did not even know that such a thing existed as fish stock. I have only ever noticed Beef, chicken and vegetable stock in Woolworths

I am actually pretty happy with the level of fishy flavour in my FPS but had I known that instant flavour could be had on tap as a fallback then that would have been locked in my FPS arsenal

Anyway here are bigger fish chunks in round 2

The problem with all the FPS online recipes I found is that they are way to complicated. It really is as easy to pie to knock this shit up and half the steps I read online seem to be dispensable, and as you know, blokeworthy shortcuts are my stocking-trade (or is it stalking-trade?)

I do put a generous scoop of Parsley, Rosemary and Thyme in the mix (but no sage, sorry Art and Simon) which really makes the flavour I think.

You are not wrong Shu, that window cleaner bottle was a sad squirter. The pressure is not enough to aerosolise the high viscosity oil, so it just squirts out in a line like a wee. But lo and bejasus if I have not just procured a proper spanky sprayer for my olive oil this time...

Looks like a top effort on the presentation and a stride above mine Mendo. But you are not thinking big here on the bloke-batch

This is serving 3 from batch 2 which I currently estimate will give me 10 servings (which is useful projection and forecasting knowledge when counting out carrot and potato portions from the pre-boiled supply each day)

Deconstructed Fish Pie indeed detracts critically and mortally from the presentation but does lend itself to the task of stretching a batch out to a 10 day run from a logistical perspective

^that was a very artful arrangement of the carrots & potatoes, looper. I'd try that.

I have lurked in this thread when it first came out, and my thought was - could the sauce be used with pasta (spaghetti/ fetuccine) instead of potatoes (whether mashed or boiled)? I think that after eating it for several days with potatoes, I'd try it with pasta. Will be kinda like a tuna (or cod) alfredo or tuna carbonara w/ cream (yes, I know that the real carbonara doesn't have cream, according to Italians.)

I also think that if one doesn't want the fish to break up into flakes, one could brown it a bit in oil before adding it to the sauce - but yeah, additional step.

    ****

I would also try Mendy's version. I think it's interesting, or the suggestion of PAG to put mashed potato on top of the tray and make it a shepherd's pie. In that case, I'll mix the peas in, so that there's more colour in the "pie"/ stew or whatchamacallit.

A tip whenever making a mashed potato pie topping, be it for cottage/shepherds or fish pie. Allow the meat/fish/vegetable filling to cool before topping with the mashed potato. This helps prevent the mash sinking into the bottom contents.

No peas in a fish pie - this has been said several times, but needs to be highlighted again!

Mendip's daughter really is a trooper; she's been put through so much, but keeps going strong. I didn't see any mashed potato top on Mendip's FPNS (which was a surprise...).

I really like the look of Looper's carrots and potatoes, bet they tasted great. I'd be tempted to add some salmon with the whitefish (might even add some small pieces of broccoli into the pie... I'd want something looking like this:

    Finger's crossed for Looper's FPNS version 4.

@Bettyboo - the "peas in pie" is like the "pineapple in pizza" debate - you either like or hate it. (I like both, but then I'm a Philistine, heh) Btw, I'm glad that you're posting again.

Broccoli in the filling looks intriguing - I'll try that. I may even put cut up green beans/ string beans if I didn't have peas available (to add colour).

@PAG - thanks for the advice re: the mashed potatoes. I'm not too keen on potatoes (if given the choice between FPNS or Uncle Roger's egg fried rice, I'll choose the fried rice), but I'll keep your tip in mind.

    Well, look again!

I cut off a slice of FPNS for lunch today and you can clearly see the 7mm covering of mashed potato with a topping of crispy cheese.

Actually, I have no idea how Looper managed to eat this stuff for nine consecutive meals.

I've managed one and a half meals on the trot and I've had enough. I'm already re-planning tonight's dinner.

The only surprise will be if I don't have to make another trip to the vet.

    Sorry, my mistake.

However, with those peas and carrots and beans, it most certainly is a FPwBS
