    That was my original question.

Alcohol contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in approximately the same proportions as sugar (not surprising since it is fermented sugar) and it also has about the same energy content (calories) as sugar when you burn it so is it possible to technically consider it to be a carbohydrate?

I am not going to google the answer even though I am interested to know what it is.

All I know is that all the research (internet) I've done says spirits are zero carbs.
I haven't looked at the science behind it but that's what they all say so I'm buying it.
Here's something about carbs and calories in vodka.

Alcohol isn't gonna help a diet whether you're looking at carbs or not - it's lifestyle, as we know. Alcohol = more alcohol = late night kebab = more alcohol while watching 3am movie = more snacks = more alcohol = no exercise the next day = weight gain.

Last night, when I met a friend at a local bar for a quick chat, decided to have one soft drink before going home, the carb or lack of in the soft drink compared to the alcoholic beverage was not a factor...

You are kind of mixing up stuff. Calories is basically a measure of energy. You can get energy from burning different types of "fuel".

You can get energy from burning wood, or petrol, or coal. All provide energy, but they are not the same thing.

So carbohydrates are one type of "fuel".

But there are calories in everything we eat (or in some cases drink). A 100 grams steak has 250 calories (but no carbohydrate). Alcohol (a vodka ) has 231 calories (but 0 carbohydrates).

That is why Ant keeps saying a simple focus on carbohydrates is wrong, as its calories that matter (total amount of fuel taken is) as opposed to the TYPE of fuel taken in.

It's exactly the type of fuel taken in that concerns us.
We don't want calories from carbs because it will be converted to glucose for use as energy whereas we want the body burning fat for energy.

I am far from an expert on this, but I think whatever the source of the extra calories - they end up stored as fat.

Correct, but how do you get the body to use the fat as energy? Deprive it of its primary energy source, carbohydrates.

    ^^ I hope that's low fat dressing...

It does look nice. &, pretty similar to what I'll be eating for dinner:

    Healthy-ish meals-20190803_170619-jpg

&, I'm gonna take a risk and put yesterday's lunch in the healthy eating thread!

    Healthy-ish meals-20190802_150849-jpg

It was really tasty, not crazy fattening, and I did plenty of exercise yesterday - burning more than I took in. Does a nice chicken burger set (& Mum's Touch is the best I've eaten) cause a problem if you have it once a week? Ok, it'd be better without the coke, but I'm gonna suggest, for my body anyways, keeping it guessing is better for it than just eating healthily all the time. You gotta keep all your body's functions active, so if you just eat healthily then maybe your body reacts slowly to certain food types?

So what happens to the alcohol we consume in terms of nutritional processing?

Does the body convert it back into glucose (like it was before it was fermented) and then possibly turn it into fat reserves if we don't burn it as glucose?

Or is it passed as a waste product after the kidney has finished processing it?

So how does ketosis work as a trick to make the body burn off its stored fat?

If you eat protein and fat so you have that energy in your stomach does your body preferentially burn the fat stored in your fat reserves before turning to the fat and protein in your stomach as an energy source?

Does your body pass some of the fat and protein as waste instead of converting it into more fat reserves?

In a nutshell and very simply put , our bodies use glucose for energy. The glucose is derived from carbohydrates. When the the body is deprived of carbohydrates as an energy source the liver will produce enzymes that convert stored fat into something called ketones which the body uses as energy instead of glucose.
The body will use some energy from fat and protein as well, but assuming you're not pigging out on everything else, when you cut out carbs the primary source of energy will become the fat your body has stored for this very use.
You'll get more in depth information if you google it.
I keep forgetting this is the healthy meals thread and not the transformation thread.

Yes. The brain is the most energy hungry organ of the body.

I'm approaching the shape I'd like to be in; maybe another 6 weeks before that 6-pack is entertaining the ladies...

The wife cooked up some pork bones with lots of meat on them while I was out; very tasty - quite healthy???

An 11.5 ounce bottle of Snapple has the equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar. You might have been better off with a glass of wine.

Right, on advice from TD, I've done one third of the snaffle then put it on the fridge for tomorrow/next day. &, there's a lot of bones on that meat... I had planned to steam the salmon (I'll do that tomorrow), but if I don't eat what the wife cooks she gets rather moody!

If happynz is in Nepal, he'll be having some nice food and beers; the curries there are great; some tasty local beers too.
