That has stirred the brain cells !

Seem to remember seeing something like this in either Tunisia or Algeria.

    or even Morocco

Brain is having a senior moment

Anyway I am sure it is on the Med coast!

Drove the complete length in the early 80's.
Casablanca to the Lybian border (work related) and am bloody certain I have been to this place !!!!! ( or something extremely very similar !)

Great guesses, but none of those. I'm envious of you for having driven that coast.

Wouldn't be envious - it was inspecting every fuel oil and docking installation - about 2000 + km, 26 installations, and three weeks to do it !!!

    heh heh

Time for a clue: This building is part of a complex which was the home to the country's emperors in the 17th and 18th centuries.

    Right
There was only the Ottoman empire in North Africa during the 17 and 18C so it has to be in either Algiers , Tunis, Tripoli or Alexandria !!!!!
I have been to all of them and KNOW I have been there !

Phoned my ex colleague up last night ( we used to work that coast together) and sent him the picture - he remembers it as well - even recalled that we parked up near it and did a couple of bottles of Cuve de President before we turned in for the night ( we had a primitive Winnebago as office/hotel/transport !) but being a senile coffin dodger like me couldn't remember where it was !!
    Bugger !

We worked Africa together from Tanzania north- East to West to the Med coast - for 16 years so could be anywhere ( and obviously is !!!)
Now am sorting through a packing case of photos - 20 or more years old - all stuck together- to find if I have one of this bugger - really got me going this one .

    I KNOW I HAVE SEEN IT !!!!

As I recall the wall on the right hand side of your pic is part of a courtyard wall - most of two sides of the yard are missing !

Just popping down to 7 -11 to get a brain cell refresher pack

    Yup.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the fortress-city of Fasil Ghebbi was the residence of the Ethiopian emperor Fasilides and his successors. Surrounded by a 900-m-long wall, the city contains palaces, churches, monasteries and unique public and private buildings marked by Hindu and Arab influences, subsequently transformed by the Baroque style brought to Gondar by the Jesuit missionaries.

Sorry, happyman, you're going to kill yourself when you see the answer. I know the feeling when you know something but just can't find it!!!!!!!

No need for such drastic action. Happyman got me to North Africa and your clue "Emperor" made the rest a piece of cake.

I gladly give my turn to Happyman! Take it away.

Reckon you have the city Mr Norton but think the actual location could be Qusquam Palace/castle just outside of town .

Gondar had a 15 MW power station ( diesel ) and I was there inspecting the fuel tanks in 19bloody72 ! Time flies

Still don't know what the actual building is though
Comparing it to the ancient watermills in Syria and Iraq - i'm still unconvinced that it is not a waterwheel installation .

    ^^^

Was digging when the answer came in
