Been told there is a section of Ban Phe that is Soi Six-ish (Pattaya). Been there during the middle of the day but everything was closed. Any experiences ???

I've never seen anything like that, just one expat pub across the road from the second pier. If there is, it would cater mainly for local fishermen- in other words it would make Soi 6 seem upmarket in comparison. Soi Syph.

Not so. The Rayong Resort, on a sand spit at the Ban Phe end or Mae Ram Pheung, is very nice. I'm told the Novotel is also (never been there, but the beach is good). Thats about 10km east of Ban Phe. They both look out on Ko Samet, where you would pay a lot more for similar standard accomodation.

This is not on the main drag along the water but heading away from the sea and is about one soi of kararoke bars etc. May be just an area for Thais /and Khemer workers . Did not look real flash .

    Wrong.

Kantary Bay Rayong (formally Kanary Bay)
Fanciest hotel in town, although probably not the best. I put my folks up there when they came to visit. Nice rooms and facilities, but the service is poor and indifferent.

However, they have great lunch & dinner buffets. Lunch is especially good deal, around 250 baht with a wide spread of good grub.

    Saifaa Kitchen and Guesthouse

MeMock reported on this place a while ago...click here to see his report.
Kudos to the owner. This is my favorite place in town. Great food, atmosphere at very reasonable prices. Leave it to a farang to do things right. Wonderful, highly recommended.

And there's several other good places to stay in town. Luckydog, you don't know what you're talking about.

Agreed on Rayong Resort...by far the best in the area. I put my mother there for a week when she came for a visit. Excellent accomodations and service. Mom doesn't get around so well anymore and the staff was very helpful and accomodating.
