Scientific Name : Dendrocygna javanica

General Characteristics : Is a medium sized bird with the body length of approximately 40 to 43 centimeters. The male and the female have the same characteristics. Feathers covering the body and the wings are reddish brown. The crown has darker color than the other part. The hair on the wingtip is black. The mouth is flat and wide with blackish grey color. The neck is long, and the wing is long with the sharp wingtip.

Habitat / Food : Can be found in Southeast Asia, China, Taiwan, and India. In Thailand, it can be found in every region.The food is the aquatic plant, and the aquatic animal which is fish, frog, and earthworm.

Behavior / Mating : It normally stays together in a big troop near the water source; for example, the well, swamp, canal, marsh, reservoir, and lake. It sometimes is in the big troop of more than 1,000. It normally seeks for the food at night. In the daytime, it will swim or take a rest and sleep on the tree near the shoreline.In the breeding season, it will stays in pairs. It breeds during the rainy season. It builds the nest near the papyrus, reed, or grass near the water source. Its nest is very simple which it uses the leaves to build the nest and its own stomach hair to support the middle of the nest. It lays 9 to 13 eggs each time. The eggs are white without any pattern. The incubation period is 29 to 31 days.

Current Status : Is both a sedentary bird and the bird that migrates during the off-breeding season. It can often be found with a large number in every region. It is categorized as a protected wild animal according to Wild Animals Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2535
