Scientific Name : Anas formosa

General Characteristics : The male has black forehead and crown and has stripes on its face which is the special characteristic and can be classified into 3 parts. The area near the eyes to the pharynx and the area near the ear to the pharynx has yellowish beige stripes with the black line separating those two areas from the area under the eyes to the black pharynx. The next area which is the back area of the face or the area from the eyes to the occiput has curve green stripes and there is white edge on the curve. The upper part of the body is brown, the chest has purple mark, the side of the body is black, and the stomach is white. The female’s body is brown, which has the same color as the female of Green wing duck, but it has a bigger size. The mouth edge has white dots. The side of the head and the pharynx has pale color. The crown has darker color.

Habitat / Food : Can be found in Northeast Asia, India, China, Hong Kong, Hainan Island, Taiwan Island, Japan, and Thailand.The food is algae, the grass, papyrus, and other aquatic plant. Besides, it also eats hayseed, paddy, insect, and aquatic animal.

Behavior / Mating : Lives in the water source. It can be found in a troop and will stay together with other teal. The Baikal Teal normally seeks for the food by swimming on the water surface in the shallow water source. If it is the large or very deep water source, it will swim only near the edge. It seeks for the food in the nighttime and in the daytime, it will take a rest.The Baikal Teal breeds and lays the eggs near the Baikal lake in Siberia and the nearby area. During the off-breeding season, it will migrate to the south to China, and Japan. In Thailand, there is no nest building for laying the eggs.
