we poisoned our friendly rat; it went behind the bedroom wall cavity (just next to the bedhead) and died there. It took over two weeks for the smell to go away, so we had to have the fan on full time and leave the windows open

Yes it does pong a bit.
That is why I only use poison in the attic which is ventilated so the smell doesn't invade the whole house.
Inside the house I use the sticky mats.
