    What dog for me ?

I've already two Golden Retriever. I love them. The old male is a family member. The young female is outstanding. If we were in Europe, she would be the perfect hunting dog. She has all the qualities of her breed ... time ten !

But as guard dogs ... just let say visitors usually find them annoying because they are too friendly.

The problem is our house is in the middle of nowhere with the closest neighbour at around 5 km. Now we have the choice : a shotgun or a couple of more "dissuasive" dogs.

I've nothing against mongrels, but in Thailand they are way too skinny. In Hong Kong near my home, I've a couple of very nice dogs, mix breed, but the right size for a guard dog. In Thailand, it seems whatever new blood you bring in, they "shrink ".

Anyway, I always liked Doberman. And they completely fit the job description.

Just wanted to know, is there any known problem for Doberman in Thailand ? And does anybody knows any reputable breeder ?
The things we regret most is the things we didn't do

It's usually hit or miss I have found what makes a good guard dog,a doberman might look the part, but they can be soft mutts too.
A Soi dog ,think part collie bitch, happened to the flats here where I live, about one year ago, starving, heavily manged, but recovered OK,now probably the best guard dog around, knows everybody who should be here, and by God keeps anybody out who should not be here, frogs too.Worth her weight in gold, just pot luck.

dobermans are scared of guns quite often, best is a german shepard or a rottie, although if they are going to be cared for mainly by Thais I wouldn't recommend either, they are way too powerful for the main part and a Thai will never learn to control or keep them safely.

German Shepard can be very civilized dogs but I had bad experience with Rottweillers and I won't definitively have one unless I can care for him 24/7.

Anyway, I never kept my dogs in cage. They will be free to roam. I just want them to be a bit territorial and big enough people don't want to mess with them.

The problem with Doberman so far is they are quite nice but powerful. With the wrong friends, they can get into trouble. My dogs are quite friendly, so it should be ok.

Black Lab. The Thais are shit scared of black dogs and their teeth contrast nicely with their coat in the night.

Mine always let friends in but checked out strangers. We had loads of people sit in their cars pointing to the dog before they got out. we lived remote as well, never had anything happen in the night and they keep the soi dogs at bay, females are the best, not bothered with defending their borders so much (where they piss)

I have a Golden Retriever and a Rottweiler. The retriever is definitely the friendlier dog of the two. But he is not keen on people he doesn,t know coming onto his patch.

Mac the Rottweiler I walk him every day around the area where I live. When the other dogs see him coming they run inside and lock the doors. He can be a bit boisterous and playful.
But if you want to enter the grounds of my house, jump the fence or open the gate. My money is on one them getting a bite at you. for being where you shouldn,t be.

My neighbours have an English Pit Bull. I walk her daily, and all the Thais keep their distance... The dog is very good with children/people generally, maybe Dobermans/Rotts/etc can be dodgy in this area. Nobody goes within several feet of my neighbours house; I've seen a group of tough looking workman shite themselves and cross the road...

It's not a guard dog as such, but people keep well away, plus you have the benefit of a more trustworthy dog (IMO). Similar to Dogcatcher, you have to keep your distance from other dogs; this 'little' 8 month old female puppy scares the shite out of all the local dogs, including some of the 'tougher' breeds mentioned above.

A lovely dog though, that needs lots of care.

Have you considered a CCTV set up?

    Along with dogs you've got.

If it's simply a security issue, I found a cheap CCTV system and a few laminated posters saying simply

    "You're on Camera"

    Worked remarkably well.

Yes, he probably means an English bull terrier. You are correct, there is only one breed of pit bull terrier.

I've got a Miniature Schnauzer. No wonder everyone sniggers at the urinals in public toilets.

Anyway, back to the dog. She is an excellent watch dog and will bark like mad if someone she doesnt know approaches the flat. Unfortunately I don't think she would bite anyone. Just barks a lot, but I guess that is enough to make most burglars choose another flat.

Ridgebacks, dont know if a Thai ridgeback is the same breed as the Rhodesian ? Great dogs the Rhodesian, like the heat, fearless but not in a hurry to bite your welcomed visitors. Will give their life to protect you and your children.
Keep good health in hot climates, tough paws (no thorn trouble).

When you live in a 1400 sg ft apartment on the 19th floor of a Singapore condo your choices are fairly limited.

After doing a bit of reading on the subject we chose this breed basis being good with kids. Which she is.

    Good, I wasn't criticizing.

Also, in case you were annoyed, I meant "gay" in the traditional sense.

    As in

    The term gay was originally used to refer to feelings of being "carefree", "happy", or "bright and showy";

Agree, especially if you are in Thailand. Nothing gets past them and they are totally loyal and affectionate to family and friends.
