    Bugs !!

So here's a few pictures of the Cicada bugs - and empty shells - that I have in my garden.

For those on dial-up, these pictures will probably take quite a while to load. I've deliberately left them at the original resolution to show maximum detail, but some I've cropped to remove unnecessary backgrounds so that they are small enough to upload.

    Enjoy! (More bugs later!)

To be completely honest, you must realise that for every picture I post, there's another 10 or 20 that are out of focus, too bright, too dark, missed the subject or any combination of the above!

But, being digital, you can just discard the bad ones and keep the good 'uns.

The biggest problem that I find when trying to take close up shots like these is trying to hold the camera steady enough. I have a very small tripod whch could be braced against the trunk for a shot like this or a monopod. The standard flash on a camera is also not really suitable for close up work as on many cameras the lens will be masking part of the subject area. Also the flash won't recharge fast enough to take a series of rapid shots.

dougal, you have just reminded me that I have a semi professional camera set up, slave flashes, tripods etc etc, I never even thought of using them with my digital camera, maybe time to improve my digital cameras quality of pictures, with the slave flashes close up they only need to give out a tiny flash so there really is no waiting for recharge time, I shall go through my cupboards and see what I have and what still works

    Ps, great pictures RDN

This bug is a bit boring - just flies around, occasionally banging into the screen doors. I wonder if he's the one who's been boring into my trees?

Here he is on top of the curtain rail:

    Climbing up the mozzie screen:

    Crawling over my desk:

And here he is on a tile outside. The white stuff is sand. He took off about two seconds after I took the picture:

Excellent link, Dougal! I'll try to identify any new bugs I photograph before I post them.

This pretty little caterpillar was on the hedge, munching away at the leaves...

I moved him onto a white plastic chair to get some clearer pictures of him:

This is good, excellent photo's, i am a keen photograper and these are good, specially for a ixus, i have a 350d, when i take close up i use to use a macro lens, but since these Image stabalization lenses, i do not bother, they go close in and get rid of camera shake, check some of my pics out on my site, most were taken with slide film from a EOS50E and scanned in, i would love your comments.

    www.gandajones.co.uk Ians Pics, 3 pages.

Once again Nice work, keep em coming

Well, I'm no expert, I just carry my camera everywhere! Your pictures are very good - and that is a seriously big pile of chillies in the second pic., first page!

    Nice pics Thaicoon.

My scanner doesn't do a very good job when I scan photos. Luckily, all my recent pics are with a digital camera.

And, for completeness, some pics of the long horned beetle that I posted in the "Thai Wasps" thread, but at their original resolution (although some cropped to get below 1 MB for uploading):

Yes, I agree but my reason is not because it just flies around or bangs into the screen doors but it's not for eating!

No bugs are for eating unless you're an animal.

A few days ago I was revisited by a couple of long-horned beetles. One was in a tree and one on the drive. Again, I've left the pictures at max resolution, so "sorry" to dial-up members.

This is the one that was on the driveway:

And this is the one on the tree:

If ever there was a time I needed TWO cameras, it was that day because, as you can see from his back-end, he was getting ready to take off just as I was taking the picture. And that is what he did.

But he didn't go far - he landed on top of my camera and gave me the evil eye! So I held the camera up in the air and he took off and disappeared.
