    Bangkok Royal Barge Procession

The Royal Barge Procession is a great event put on for various royal and religious events. It usually happens each year following the 3 month Buddhist Lent. You are not supposed to view the procession from buildings or bridges so most people flock to riverside restaurants for a look. The good thing is they do a few practice runs so there are lots of excuses to find a good seafood restaurant with cold beer and watch it all pass by. Here are a few shots.

Actually, it doesn't take place every year....There have been a glut lately with it happening 3 timnes in 4 years.

This year was for the Royal Kathin Festival combined with the Kings 80th Birthday. There is also another theory on that score......

Last year was for the 60th Anniversary of the Coronation.

2003 was a special one and the only ever night time procession in honour of George W Bush's appearance at APEC.

Prior to that the last one was in 1997 for the Kings 50th year of rule.

Including rehearsals i've seen it 5 times, marvellous event though this years was ruined somewhat by certain circumstances that shouldn't be discussed here.

Great photos, Wayne! Thanks. I had some royal barge postage stamps once -- 96? Took up half the envelope.

Very nice pics. Did you take them from a restaurant called In Love - it looks like how I remember the view.

No not "In Love", which by the way must be one of the worst restaurants (in terms of food and service) in that part of the town. This joint is at the end of Si Ayutthaya Rd.

Yes, I know what you mean. The band was OK though, and the waitresses were scenic.
