Never went to a fire show. The stench of backpacker round those parts would be too much.

Well, just booked my flights. I'll be landing on Jan 23 and will be spending a week in Bangkok with the missus sorting out her tourist visa. After that, we are heading down to Ko Chang for a few days. She wants to go to Pattaya also to see her friend and although I can not stand the place, I guess I'll have to stomach it for a few days.

It's a hard slog, three days in Pattaya.

No one hated Pattaya more than me before I moved here, out of frustration of living out in the boonies and not having my western comforts within a 100 mile distance I decided to bite the bullet and move to pattaya ! Just stay away from
Walking street and other tourist traps and when your not getting shit faced go use
the gym if only for the sauna an pool or try the muay Thai out !

My overall view of Koh Chang was generally a great place for a maximum 3 week holiday. I could have enjoyed the two main pub / clubs in Klong Prao night after night, as each night there were different European chicks out for a good time. 90% of the Thai girls that frequented these joints were there to find a foolish farang, and were recognisable after a few days.

I had a chilled time, and sampled most of the nightlife areas.

There's even it's own crappy little Walking Street which has three bars.

Wouldn't touch any of the girly bars though.

At least I can head down to the shooting range and waste some money on some ammo. There's one thing I like about Pattaya and it's a resturant on Walking Street. The creamy roast potatoes are the dogs.

Another one saying that those were the days. Did they have electricity and cars?

Your getting a bit slow Pat, as whores are usually recognized after a few nano seconds.

    Common mistake.

I meant that after a few nights you realised the same girls were at the club every night.

I cannot speak for 8 years ago.
But I first spent time there in 1996, 3 months as it turned out.

There were no paved roads and only generators supplying electricity until 10 PM. And then everyone would hit the sack.
Very few cars, only a few pickups. Song Taew.

I just went to visit the island with my then 4 year old son, but somehow got stuck.
I wasn`t the only one. Most farang visitors turned out to be longtermers as well.
We got to get each other very well.
In fact I am still in contact with several of them.

I have revisited a couple of times in recent years. 2-3 years ago.
I still find it nice, just in a whole different way.

    Nuis bar?

I never went to any bars while staying there, but did however notice a tiny bar on White Sand Beach with a bill board which read:

"Buy one bottle of Mekong and smoke all the gancha you want for free"
It that the one you are referring to? It was situated right next to the dirt road leading through WSB.
Only reason why I remember it is because of the bill board. Pretty hard to overlook.

I stayed at Mac Bungalows on White Sand Beach and later at White Sand Beach Resort. I dont believe the latter exists any more.

Sorry, I dont reall Hobby Hut.

This is Mac Bungalows 1996 during a flood.

    White Sand Beach Resort:

This is what the main road looked like:

In those days it was quite a challenge driving south of Khlong Phrao, as there was no bridge spanning the river and you would just have to drive through it.

White Sands is completely different now. Give it a few more years and the whole place will be different.

great pics pescator, i was there 99, and the river was there to cross as the tarmac road was just going in through khlong prao and it was right at the bridge. nuis bar was right on khlong prao beach, near where the panviman is now,can never remember seeing as many stars in the sky as i saw in the sky there, not much light pollution, magical place
